The USA has a fake/made-up/arbitrary/stupid debt ceiling. We are 1 of 2 first world countries that have one (the only other being Denmark) It's really more symbolic than anything else, seeing as how it has been raised over 100 times since Reagan, so any intelligent person could see that it doesn't really matter.

So, congress has to vote to raise the debt ceiling whenever the Treasury Secretary says that if we don't do it by a certain date, we won't have enough money to pay our debts and we will default on SOME (not all) of our debts, thus lowering our national credit and raising interest rates.

Well, the Republicans never REALLY wanted to vote against raising the debt ceiling, that would just be stupid. But they used it as leverage. What they did want was spending cuts, no new taxes, and possibly an amendment to the US Constitution that states the US government HAS to have a balanced budget. (even though I suspect that amendment was only for publicity too)

So the Democrats didn't want any of that. They wanted to solve the debt crisis by increasing tax revenue by creating new taxes on the wealthy and corporations. BUT THEY HAD NO LEVERAGE. The republicans just said "fine then, we will default on our credit while you guys have the senate and the white house and we will win big in 2012"

So ultimately the Republicans got their way. NOT COMPLETELY, but pretty much.

The debt ceiling is getting raised, there will be some small-but-immediate spending cuts to the US Budget. Then over the next 3 years they are supposed to cut 2 trillion (or something like that) from the budget while increasing the budget by 9 trillion (or something like that).

So really, a whole lot of noise about nothing.

Took what I thought would be my last piss test for my DWI yesterday. So last night I went out and had a few drinks. Unfortunately my probation officer just called and said my Urine was diluted (to much water) and that I'd have to retake within 24 hrs. I'm fucked.

Yeah, I can't drink while on probation. Which for me is 1 year. My probation officer has only tested me 2 times though. So if you want to risk it there's a good chance you'll get away with doing things that don't stay in your system very long.

Had it been said that this would be your last test? if so, and if your year is up or at least close to being up they'd have to be really lame to fuck with you on this. Then again, i have no idea what i'm talking about.

Why did you think this was your last test? Did they say it would be? Or did you just assume it would be because you didn't get tested often? When are you off probation?

The time before I saw him he said I'd have one more test. I've only had one before.
I don't think I could fight it. People get diluted results all the time and have to pay for the diluted test and the new one. It's Bullshit. I'm off probation at the end of September. My PO's a pretty nice guy, and I've been doing everything I'm supposed to do, but I think a failed drug test is one of those things they can't ignore.

I still think you're ok though, this test is actually over 24 hours away though isn't it? Where do you live? I want to see if I can figure out which test they are going to make you take.

On a strictly philosophical level, this really makes me mad. That they can tell people that they can't drink for a year because of a DUI. Drinking isn't a crime, you shouldn't be punished for it. They can't just create crimes out of thin air because you committed a different one (which I don't even believe to be a crime in the first place). Thats such shit. I'm getting pissed just thinking about this. I need to hurry up and go to law school

I was pissed off about it too, but when you're not a lawyer or can't afford one they can dick you around as much as they want cause they know nothings going to happen. I was even told by a friend that asked a judge about people representing themselves in court, and he said they basically are as hard on the person as they can be. Because they know you don't know all the ins and outs of the law.
