i work in a liquor store so i deal with arseholes like this all the time. none of them sexually forward as he is though. i asked my store manager what to do if he comes in again and makes a comment like that and she said if he says anything that makes me feel uncomfortable then i have to ask him to leave the store. even if he stops saying shit, it's the way he looks at me. last time i was moving cartons of beer onto a trolley and he came and stood really close to me and said something about my "body strength" which was utterly sexual. the first time he ever said something to me was about the birthmark on my arm. he asked me if it was okay for him to check my body to see if i had any other birthmarks.

So is the "non American" way of doing things to take non stop shit and harrassment from somebody and hope it magically goes away without standing up for yourself?

no. the non-american way of things is not to swear at the customer and tell them to either stop saying inappropriate things or leave and don't come back. you can never say 'fuck off' to a customer. absolutely not. i never want to get to a point where i have to carry a gun or knife. that's not the sort of life i want to lead. i don't believe in that type of 'resistance'. if other people do then that's their prerogative, but it's not going to ever be mine.

but this is my problem, the fact that i don't like confrontation. i used to be able to tell men to keep their garbage to themselves, but i don't know what happened to my nerve. i guess this certain man just really creeps me out in a way that i don't want to communicate with him in any way.

I don't think anyone was completely serious when they said "tell him to fuck off". I think that just means "quit being a pussy, stand up for yourself and do something strong."

I think the best way to deal with it is to tell him that if he doesn't stop with all the innuendo and harassment, you're going to ban him from the store. If he refuses, he is a crazy person and you ban him from the store. If he says he'll stop and doesn't, you ban him from the store. If he says okay and really means it, he's not going to come back. You're part of the reason he even goes there. He wants to pee in your butt.

And since when do you allow people to take giant shits all over you while you do nothing but sit there quietly and take it?

I'd like to add that Trey's point about defending yourself is valid. You never know what people are capable of. I think carrying a gun or knife is ridiculous though. There's no reason to be THAT paranoid.

I'd also like to add that if standing up for yourself and not taking shit from people is so laughably American that I just got slightly more patriotic.

that very "fuck off or i'll bust a cap in yo ass" is very american. that's the sense i got from reading what trey wrote. that is not how we do things in australia. we don't tell customers, YES EVEN CREEPY ONES, to fuck off. it is never acceptable. we ask them to leave the store. i had a customer threaten to kill me once. he damn near jumped over the counter. he was absolutely drunk so he was all over the place. i immediately called security. sometimes telling them to fuck off triggers them into a bigger fit of rage. i'm pretty definite if i told this arsehole to fuck off it'll make things worse for me. i have to approach it in a way that will just shame him. i'm capable of doing that but you have to understand, it is crippling to be made to feel the way he makes me feel. i only get mad afterwards because it sinks in then. he always corners me when no one is around. he hasn't come in for 2-3 weeks now, but i talked to my manager and explained to her what was happening. i didn't specifically tell her what he has said to me but she got the gist of things and she also told me that she was surprised i hadn't handled this already. I AM DISAPPOINTED IN MYSELF THAT I HAVE LET IT HAPPEN THREE TIMES.
