last night my dad asked me to come to dinner with him and his mates and to strike up a friendship with one of his friends rather shy and bookish son, who is a medicinal chemist who needs to be shown how to have a good time. this was okay by me as i got a free meal and some nice company and besides which i'm generally inclined to dine with young men as it is without promises of ten courses and a bouquet of flowers to sweeten the deal.

all was going well with plenty of entertaining talk about biochemistry and DNA strands until the conversation inevitably veered towards politics and the evening suddenly went awry:


me: so who did you vote for?

him: liberals!


beat.


me: are you joking?

him: no.

me: ...why?

him: free public transport for students!


beat.


me: is that it?

him: yep!

me: you voted for ted baillieu solely because of free public transport for students.

him: yep!

me: what about his other policies?

him: (shrugging) anything to do with free public transport and i'm there!

me: what about if hitler had offered free public transport for students, would you have voted for him?

him: probably!

this exchange raised three issues for me:

1. i have realised now that i am a polite soul who will continue to make charming and whimsical small talk with someone at dinner even though i am privately entertaining thoughts about lunging across the table and stabbing them with a fork.


p.s. liberals - i may be polite but i still won't fuck you.


2. it's truly appalling to me - and it shouldn't be, i am just a naive moron - that votes are still won and lost via hollywood promises. i hope our kevin's ready to offer free hand shandies to socially awkward medicinal chemists. the guy will fucking cane it.

3. the 'who did you vote for' question raises its head again. seems a perfectly natural line of query to me, and our young innocent was perfectly happy to answer in between bites of felafel. was i breaking social rules by just coming out and asking directly? were we better off not knowing each other's political preferences, thereby continuing the rest of the meal in oblivious bliss? do you think i can convince him to come to the Good Side if i buy him tea on the restaurant tram?
