The opiate of the masses is subject to personal opinion. The Marxists believe it is religion, I'm not so sure I agree with that fully though. Yes religion has been used to suppress the masses, but that doesn't mean suppression is the purpose of religion. People will abuse anything to gain power, religion is just easier to use in manipulating people because people tend to believe in it.
