It is also not being subjugated or subordinated in a hierarchy (of any sort)

This is completely subjective. But the meaning HUMAN life, for me, is to live, experience and love as best as one can.  I don't agree with Immanuel Kant per se...but following ones desires (not hedonism) is important.  Life is not meant to regret.  There is still morality written within ourselves as an "evolved" species.  I feel that it is meant to help others grow and love.  Nonhuman life...well who knows...why don't we ask the birds and trees? Certainly not to support us as humans, and if so we're not doing a very good job of reciprocating that love and support.
