The Captain

That fool needs to go away, he's damn annoying

Joey, you see Wedding Crashers yet?

Malpractice

no i didn't see wedding crashers

i would like too but movies are too damn expensive

and in response to defskull Anthony Anderson was quite good in this movie i usually dislike him but this was the first time they didn't just put him in the movie to be the fat loud black guy. he wasn't yelling or breaking things he was actually acting so it was cool to see him finally show he can act too.

black coffee

Saw Batman Begins last night, and o my friggin' god it was good.  And the fact that it opens for a sequel just makes it so much better.

I saw Thelma and Louise and A Very Long Engagement this weekend.

As far as Thelma and Louise goes, I thought it was pretty good. I like Susan Sarandon's acting a lot and Geena Davis was pretty good, too and you can't forget Michael Madsen and Harvey Keitel. This movie probably would have sucked if there were other actors playing these parts.

A Very Long Engagement was rather disappointing. It mostly had to do with WWI and it was very different from Amélie, as it was really depressing (Not that I was expecting another Amélie, but just different from it). Audrey Tautou does have the ability to charm the pants off me and that the Maneach (sp?) was uber hot in it. It seemed like the plot got lost in between war flashbacks. I didn't know Jodie Foster was in here, though until I saw it.

The Captain

A Very Long Engagement looks really good, really epic. But I believe it could be diappointing. I rented Dirty Pretty Things because of Audrey and it was disappointing.

feeling like more

I just saw that movie.  One of my tops for the year.  Vince Vaughn is at the top of his game in this movie.  Seriously, everyone needs to see this.

Tarnation is a kind of 'stream of consciousness' video diary that aggressively challenges what defines a documentary. It is a revelation in personal filmmaking, a hybrid between the 'fake' (performance) and the 'real' (real life). Looking at the non-fiction landscape in cinemas right now, which is brimming with earnest political tracts and exercises in agit-prop comedy, Tarnation is unique. It is also one damn fine movie.

Since his eleventh birthday thirty-one year-old filmmaker Jonathan Caouette has been documenting his life via a bunch of different media: photos, Super 8 home movies, video diary, writing and performance. He uses all of these elements to fashion his fraught family story, which forms the foundation of the film. As we see, Caouette is very much a product of nature and nurture. Raised in Texas by his grandparents, he begins the story of his mother's life, Renee, a woman who was put into psychiatric institutions in her teens. Wrestling with drug use and physical abuse, Renee's life was eroded by battle after battle, not the least of which was with her parents who ultimately raised Jonathan, her son, in her absence. In effect Tarnation is his "love letter" to his mother, where he uncovers the truth behind her tortured existence and reconciles the pain he has with his own.

It would be easy to write off Tarnation as yet another tabloid exercise in airing dirty laundry. But like Andrew Jarecki's Oscar-nominated Capturing The Friedmans (2003) - another profound documentary about family secrets and the fall out on a family - Tarnation takes things to a new level. This is a film that defies conventional non-fiction storytelling by embracing fiction. It is vigourously subjective; images are heavily stylised, edited and manipulated, the music pop soundtrack is intrusive and often drives narrative, reminding us that we are watching a film...this ain't verite.

But these techniques don't make Tarnation any less truthful or authentic. Just the opposite. Whether or not you agree with Caouette's decision to make it there is no denying that Tarnation is compelling, moving, poetic and powerful. It isn't merely a family album filled with grimaces instead of smiles, and it also transcends being an hysterical exercise in cathartic personal
