uhh i was thinking they are more popular metal than progressive.

Progressive music is stuff like King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Dream Theater. The bands you named are in NO way progressive, they are barely even doing anything original, their roots are all in other popular bands that came before them. They all use simple time signatures and simple scales, not that there is really anything wrong with that but you are just continuing the vicious, unoriginal cycle of repeated verses and choruses, and I'd hate for more of the same music we already have to be brought into the world.

And theres no reason to pride yourself in learning those bands songs, anyone could learn their songs, and most people do. I can already play almost every deftones, tool and nin song on guitar and bass. The only reason i havent learned them all is it just really isn't worth the time learning someone elses work when you could be creating something of your own and contributing to our trek towards ultimate completion.

I guess I'm just ranting because I hate to see someone lose access to so many great bands just because of the shitty ones the mainstream (you) only gets to hear.

i listen to alot of non mainstream music, but i guess 'popular'' metal rocks my boat more than anything. and i do make my own music/scales more than anything, heavy middle eastern influences, after travelling there and learning from the best,  and playing at tempos of 40000 BPM and playing at an average of 4 million notes per second, i have come to the realization that i am... god.  thanks newoldtype, youre a wonderful gal.

some of those bands like sublime or audioslave and some other decent ones i only have a couple album, but ones like floyd, radiohead, bjork, apc , and 90% of that list i have every single album,  so just because i have serj and maynard on my sig dont think all i listen to is SOAD, although i wouldnt mind, because they are fucking awesome, and youre just too narrowminded and hypnotized by your own ignorance. i do admit i am narrowminded towards this shitty tight pants cock licking emo/hxc fad,  and im VERY glad i am, because i continue to thrive as a guitarist listening to legends and classics...   i know my list of bands isnt very big , and im missing alot right now and alot of cds i have that are at my parents house so i didnt bother mentioning , and shit like cryptopsy, and celtic frost, and emperor ,    but this list does it for me, and im content.

i hope mewithoutyou leaks soon, i hope it's more like a to be life. catch for us the foxes had some damn good songs, but as an album it got pretty boring and repeative. i have to be in a perfect mood to listen to that album. because lets face it, january 1979 and four word letter (part 2) are what really lifts that album.

ben

The new song I heard on MWY's myspace was pretty good.  I'll definitely check the album out.

To me it's 'The Soviet', 'My Exit, Unfair' and 'Son of a Widow'.

And Ben, there are no new songs on their Myspace. Nice and Blue Pt. 2 is just a re-recording of the version from their first album.

ben

Paint Your Lips

And that's so not Myspace. Tsk.

And i'm totally gonna check that one out now ! But, i really love their 'A sweater poorly Nit' ! It's beautiful.
