Surprisingly the Kerrang review has the only slight piece negativity I've seen in any of the reviews (they still gave it 4/5):

QuoteWith a band so universally adored as Deftones are it's almost an act of sacrilege to award their efforts with anything less than a perfect score, but while Ohms delivers on all expected fronts, it's in the unexpected where things fall just that little bit short. The unerring familiarity, the lack of surprise, and the near-flawless balance struck between all aspects of the band's appeal arguably works against it. You've seen them pull off all of these tricks before. But oh what tricks.

I must say from my only listen, I don't know how you can fail to spot new elements in this.

Trust me.... never listen to one review. Listen to your own ears + the people. I agree with what you said though.
I've seen bands read a review of their album and not let that shit go for years :)  It's just one persons review.

I could be one out of 20 or so.  The good reviews go out the window when a bad one comes in.... even though it shouldn't matter :)
Trust me I never pay much heed to reviews either.

Goddamn TSOM is such a great track. The last two and a half minutes - fucking amazing.  what a groove.  This is immediately in my top ten favorite Deftones songs ever. (i don't say this lightly. i'm doing everything i can you find fault in this album lol)

I don't get this love for TSOM, it's good, but I don't get it, man. There are much better tracks in my opinion.

What a day. My wife gave birth to our daughter and I get home to this news. :-)

Spell of Mathematics stood out on first listen.  Other than that I'll keep my initial reaction to myself. I'll need several listens to formulate my thoughts.

Can't wait for the vinyl to get here. I saw info about the deliveries being delayed in Canada, same for the states?

Congratulations, man!

Error is gorgeous . That ending is prestige. Wow

I've followed this band since the beginning. 13 concerts (15 including Team Sleep), anticipating every album like Christmas morning...and this is the first time I am even thinking of caving on getting a leak. Trying to resist...but these descriptions are KILLING me. (Also doesn't help that I haven't downloaded anything I wasn't supposed to since the Limewire days and the leak/dowenlaod environment out there is vert strange and different to me now...)

By the way, this leak is definitely not quite optimal quality. Sounds good but a little sloshy on the high end. I've reserved myself to the one listen for this reason.

I'll just wait...anyway it's least than 2 days.

so how is everyones morning going? feeling better now?

Well actually I just heard that a dear friend of mine has cancer and it cant be cured. So the new Tones record comes at the best time possible for me to sink my teeth in. Thanks for asking.

Edit: congrats to B_S_79 on the baby! This is the circle of life folks.

Stood out on first listen. I like the vibe of it. The guitar work sounds a bit different for a Deftones track.  I want to take the last three minutes of the song and loop it and take a long drive with the windows down. Haha.

To each his own.

THanks man, already regret saying it because it has nothing to do with this topic, but I guess it'll be forever linked to this record for me now.

But again, i want to repeat, WHAT a record it is. Ive listened to it one time fully now and I think tonight Ill take a second spin, perhaps tomorrow one more and then Friday its one continuous listening party for me lol, the album will soon find a place in my endless Deftones rotation that Ive been keeping up since I was 16 with some small down periods.

I guess you could say Deftones are truly the soundtrack of my life. It has to be after 20 fucking years. And with another fantastic album, this won't change anymore.

Im just happy to live this one life I have in the same time as the Deftones exist. How lucky to have that.

B_S_79

This is our second. The life i once had is long gone, but the wife understands i will never stop going to concerts. i just can't sleep in the day after like i used to. sleeping is a luxury i will never have again. haha.

Can't wait until my official copy is sent to me. Need to listen lots more.

Uhhhh, yeah I don't know about this album.

There's some cool stuff going on with pretty much every song, but I feel like they're leaning too heavily on the unorthodox song structures/left-field transitions in an attempt to keep the songs interesting. Just makes a lot of songs feel unnecessarily stilted or undeveloped since they don't end in a satisfying way.

Seems like Steph just wants to play bass at this point. Either him or Chino needs to truly start taking over lead guitar duties. If they want to have these super simple two note low-end riffs, they need to put something more interesting over them with the lead guitar or just write better riffs (there were times when I felt like I was listening to Korn). I remember feeling like Rubicon's verse riff had the same problem. They're basically pulling a Hum/Failure with that simple low end drive, without the interesting guitar leads on top. A lot of songs could've benefited from a solo as well.

Sergio and Abe are definitely the highlights here. Chino and Frank bring a heavy 80s vibe which is cool, but this might be some of his worst lyrics/delivery, and Frank feels like he's there to try and spice up boring Steph riffs with synths that ultimately aren't interesting enough to recover it. Steph either needs to full on channel Meshuggah and write some really complex riffs if he's going to rely on that low end or switch back to at least a 7-string because this is getting a little tired. Best parts of his were the fast paced metal riffs that almost could've been on Adrenaline. More of that and less 0-2 chugga please.

Really wish they'd have written at least one full on Deftones ballad a la Beauty School or Entombed. It's not as cohesive of an album as we were led to believe either. Yeah, the album flows unlike say SNW and has a vibe that is super consistent, but KNY I think still works better track to track with its transitions. KNY had much better intros, outros, and segues in my opinion. In the end, the sameness of Ohms might work against it with it being difficult to really tell songs apart from each other very well.

I wish the outro on "Pompeji" was longer

Ves, you can listen back on the BBC Sounds app or on the bbc 6 music website. I got a shout out from Mary Anne Hobbs also!
