Why I don't go to Deftones shows anyomore

DISCLAIMER: I've seen Deftones live 4 times between 2003 and 2010. This isn't meant as any disrespect to the band or people that are current, devoted fans. Whatever makes people happy is cool. The following is a list of reasons why I just can't get excited about Deftones coming to town anymore...

1. They divorced Saturday Night Wrist from their repertoire
2. They pretty much play the same setlists every single night of their tours now
3. Chino used to have a signature style and he owned it like Elvis. Yes, I'm talking about the converse/skater socks
4. Cover songs of 80s bands are no more, but used to be one of the coolest things to expect (like easter eggs)
5. (an extension of #4) No more splitting up 7-Words to throw in an epic cover song.
6. No more euphoric, uplifting, etherial songs like Minerva, Cherry Waves
7. The final and most important reason is very hard to say. But, it's never been the same without Chi :(

Well, you should do whatever works for you... I don't feel the way you do, however, I respect your point of view as well. As I've got tickets to seven different shows for the upcoming European tour in spring, I couldn't be more excited to see them play live again. I've seen them six times and although I've only been a fan since 2012, I do consider myself to be quite devoted. There's nothing wrong with your opinion, though, and I can see why it'd be different, perhaps difficult, for you to see them without Chi. I can understand how you feel. Just do whatever makes you feel happy and since you happen to be new, welcome to the board. :)

If it helps you feel better, I do have similar feelings about a different band as well and as though I never thought I'd not be over the moon to see them again, I'll be missing their European tour this time. It's totally okay to feel this way. Nothing lasts forever, I suppose, not even fandom. I do recall Stef mentioning it's hard for them to come together and to rehearse different songs, so that should be why the setlists are usually quite the same. (I think it was in last year's Australian Q&A?) Bands change and so do fans. They weren't for me when they were younger and now I think they're just fine; not perfect, but it works for me. Who knows what'll happen on the upcoming tours... perhaps you should get yourself a ticket and see? Deftones will be Deftones: they'll always be full of surprises! ;) Do whatever makes you feel good.
Eccentricity is but a sophisticated form of insanity.

...I was entertaining the notion of seeing them in June but when I looked at Ticket Master, all the decent seats were sold out. I've been to the Amphitheater where they're booked for a bunch of shows and the seats available just aren't worth the the obstructed viewing (I'm 5'7 so an unusual amount of seating is obstructed for me and my cursed kind)

I've passed the last couple of times myself. Don't like amphitheaters/arenas. And we can all agree the setlists are stale. But come on dude, does it matter what Chino wears on stage? lol

Yeah and it's not even true that statement!

The first time I saw them was the last time you saw them, 2010. I've seen them play Hole in the Earth, Cherry Waves, Kimdracula and Riviere. And Minerva. Just depends on what happens when you see them.

Their setlists have been way too repetitive, but they've been working on that a little bit, and they've been saying that they want to start switching up their setlists more and more. Usually I wouldn't believe that, especially since they started only playing two Gore songs, but then they started adding more and more Gore songs, opening with Kimdracula, changing things a bit, etc. So I believe them, I think it's just about them (probably mostly Chino) rehearsing older songs to a degree where they're confident adding them to the setlist. But I do think they'll be making more of an effort with the setlists again.

Anyway, if you don't get excited anymore, that sucks, but from my own experiences seeing them live, I've found that those reasons don't apply (except for his clothes, but I don't really care about that).

Oh, shut up...it's gotmyknife's prerogative (and more importantly, their money) if they don't want to go see them live. I don't care what a stranger does in his personal time. If anything, gotmyknife makes a lot of valid criticisms (something you should learn to do, instead of just relying on the quote function). Furthermore, we've all criticized aspects of their tours. My problem is they haven't really been switching up setlists and haven't even played many Koi and Gore songs live. And yeah, more covers would be awesome.

I agree with some of what you've said.

As you can see below, my first show was the year of your last. So I can't really speak on how they were before then, except what I've seen on youtube videos and such. I've seen them play a few SNW and ST songs, but since those are my two favorite albums I do wish they'd play those songs more. It always seems to be a WP/ATF-fest whenever I go, which is fine since I love those albums too. I just wish they would vary up their setlists a bit more.

I was pleased to see Kimdracula open their set last year. They also played Minerva that show. They didn't end the show with 7 Words, which is great because they've closed with it for so long. I loved seeing WGTB twice live in 2015. They also played Beware and Bloody Cape (Bloody Cape being probably my favorite Deftones song) at one of those 2 shows. I also got to see Riviere a few years back.

So at least they've been trying.

But you can't excuse the lack of cover songs, both live and recorded. That's definitely something I miss.

2 good points!

Uuuuh, they definitely played Minerva the last time I saw them, which was last August....

He's not telling live...but, Creating new songs as that!

sooniletugo

Most of those points are moot, but I miss studio covers. They were planning to record some covers (Earth wind & Fire and Elvis they mentioned) after KNY, it didn't happen, and none this time around either.

I don't really want to see covers live for the sake of it though, and 7 Words needed a rest. He did add a Katy Perry - Firework partial cover to it in 2011 btw... and he still does things like adding some Hotline Bling lyrics to Passenger, and Black Sabbath lyrics in Around the Fur. Also Kimdracula was played at like almost every show in 2016, even opened a ton of shows. I would like them to switch it up more, but they do good compared to most bands these days. And in the most recent tour there was more variation each night.

KNY songs, I agree, but they've played lots of Gore songs. All of them except Pittura Infamante, Xenon and Phantom Bride.

That's true...let me rephrase. They aren't playing many Gore songs per show. I saw them at the Greek last year and they played three Gore songs. You think when touring in the same year they released a new album, they'd do like six or seven songs from that album at a given show.

I would love to see Steph bust that solo out live. There was a facebook chat interview in Australia with Steph, Abe and Sergio and they mentioned that they don't have time to practice and play songs so they just usually rehearse what they already know. That was their reasoning.
