Gore is not my favorite album. It's also not my least favorite album. I will say, though, that the lyrics on Gore strike me as some of the best Deftones lyrics in a long time. Chino is known for his cryptic lyrics, but deep down most people realize his early lyrics were nonsensical and random (think Adrenaline, in particular).

I think what you speak of, Chino not remembering his lyrics, refers mostly to the lyrics he wrote early in their career. I believe that, as a lyricist, he's become much more sincere over the years. Maybe he's degraded a bit as a vocalist, but as a lyricist he's definitely grown tremendously.

I still think Gore is great. I do get the hate, though. No band that has gone through as many changes as many times as Deftones have could go without negative fan reaction.

To me, Chino sounds very immature, I can see it in the lyrics too. Example: Korn, Linkin Park, limpbizkit and Metallica weren't the only targets of his trash talking interview, unfortunately. it would terribly hypocritical to go on tour with bands that he clearly has no respect for. So yeah! Money!

And we're talking about the same guy who did a song with Bassnectar and then did an interview saying he didn't like either dubstep or the song but liked getting paid for it. Probably the same exact reason he's working with Skrillex now. Lol.

But to his credit, Deftones haven't toured with any of those bands after Chino's shit-talking in the press besides Korn, I think. In the case of Korn, he was really just telling Jonathan Davis to step his lyrics up. And, in Chino's defense, Jonathan Davis' lyrics are absolutely fucking terrible.

Also, for the record, Lars Ulrich called Chino an idiot for supporting Napster back in the White Pony days. So, Chino insulting Metallica could be considered clapping back.

AND he did say all of that shit during the "Dark Days" when he was high and drunk as fuck half the time. Keep that in mind.

Even if he toured with those bands, I wouldn't really care much. It would make him a tad hyprocritical and I'd naturally rather go see Deftones play shows with bands I like (Deftones and Thrice...YAY!) instead of bands that suck ass (every band that he insulted that isn't Metallica), but I'm sure bands tour with other bands they fucking hate all the time. Plus, the guy does have a family to feed.

See, I like the "my custom made nightmares" line. I like the "armed with teeth in fashion" part too, although it does sound like the Chino mix-and-match my favorite words school of lyricism. I'm not saying it's pure lyrical brilliance, but I'm not exactly seeing how those lyrics are immature, either.

I guess because they aren't as sophisticated and mature as noted Poet Laureate Fred Durst's "She likes the way we pump it, I call her pumpkin pie". Mmm, yes! Such a rich tapestry of wordplay and metaphor! GENIUS!

And yes, history has venerated Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Papa Roach...as really great punchlines when people talk about bands that sniff ball sacks.

And I really don't see how when it's Chino, it's "his lyrics can be immature", but when it's Fred Durst, it's "Oh, it's just Limp Bizkit! What do you expect? Don't take it so seriously!" But I guess that's because you hold Chino and Deftones to a much higher standard.

But you're right, don't take LB seriously. No one does. They are pretty much universally regarded as a joke.
