I mean, I know most ppl give the direction of the new production the benefit of the doubt...but I would welcome any negative feedback towards Terry Date.  I bet it's minimal and extinguishable.  I think we all would be extremely excited for a new Deftones release if we knew it involved Terry Date...even Deftones 2.0 fans have to agree with that.

What is people's problem with Ezrin? I love Date too, but those mixes Ezrin did were pretty epic in my opinion.

Those first three songs are great tracks and I find no problems with them at all. Some parts of them could've been a little more fleshed out or maybe a little more could've been added to them, but they're all solid enough tracks that if they were found in an overall better crafted album would fit in just fine.

Xenon - Good song, best chorus on the album, but needed something more of a real bridge and/or intro/outro to make it more interesting and less predictable.

GH - Another good song, but the production on this is fucking awful. The instrumentation sounds so muffled to the point where you feel like you're listening to an indie rock band.

Rubicon - Good enough song except for the slight amount of laziness that should've been so obvious to the band that they needed to change. That verse riff of Steph's is snoozeville. Really, that should have just been accomplished by Sergio and there should have been some sort of atmospheric lead or noise provided by the guitars, or at least that should have been added on top. This song has definite Failure worship to it and they should've followed suit on that with the verse. Also would've been nice if they maybe added a solo or additional guitar lead fills to the final chorus.

H/W - This song is OK. But, it's nothing special. I dig the intros this band does but it doesn't lead into a song that's worth the buildup. If the rest of the album hadn't been so disappointing, I might be able to view this track in a different light, but because of that, this song just adds to the overall middling nature of the work.

(L)MIRL - Starts off pretty great and Chino's vocal performance on the first verse is creepy as hell. But the tonal shift of this song is jarring and it doesn't really work. I love the more romantic or upbeat stuff this band does (Entombed is a top 5 Deftones track for me), but what they did here just doesn't work.

PB - Of all the genres and styles to draw upon from the 80's, cheesy butt metal balladry is not one of them. This might have been OK as a quirky and/or ironic b-side, but keep that shit out of this band.

Gore - LAZY AS FUCK. Don't know why they thought this song was good enough for the record (maybe they were throwing Steph a bone?). This sounds like something a shitty high school band would write.

PI - I'm all for this band's experimentation and inclusion of different musical styles. But like in the case of PB, Weezer is not something that works in the context of this band's sound (and I fucking love early Weezer).  Again, might have worked as a b-side, but the entire tone of this song is so out of place for this band, even on this album.

Really like the tone and artistic effort put into those first three tracks. But after that, this album drops off fast and I have some kind of major problem with each of the remaining tracks. And even among those three that I think lives up to this bands legacy, there isn't really a song that I have a kind of super strong visceral connection to. Even S/T, which I thought was a super lazy and disappointing album, at least had Anniversary.

I think this might be their worst album.

I agree that the first three songs are among the strongest, but personally i think most of this album holds up really well.
Phantom Bride and L(MIRL) are good songs, but only OK Deftones' songs, and Gore is a huge borefest apart from Abes drumming in the first verse.

What's with this LAZY description you keep talking about? You've been using it for years to describe S/T and now for this? Are you too lazy to come up with a different adjective? I just don't hear it. If is the mood that they've been trying to create/be influenced by (shoe gaze/drone) then I happen to like that "lazy" sound ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Help me understand.

They often obviously just go with the first idea they get (or rehash/reuse an idea or sound) and or get to the bridge section of a song and go "Hey Steph write a two chord heavy riff!" and call it a day. That's what I mean by lazy. As you've said, I've already gone into why S/T was lazy numerous times over the years. I love all of the musical genres they draw from; space-rock, prog, goth, shoegaze, etc. and adore their use of atmosphere. But sometimes, they get dragged down by their laziness. You can make heavy use of these styles and tones and still come up with something intellectually stimulating.

This is my favorite band, but I have no problem pointing out where they fall flat, and unfortunately, it's usually because of laziness. The guys in this band are the epitome of those kids that teachers and parents furrow their brows over and say "But they have so much potential, if only they weren't so lazy!".

I agree with a lot of what you said. Song structure has been a bit weak. No bridges. Some songs sound cut and pasted, literally. Yes, the Gore riff is something my band actually wrote in high school.  I wish the vibe of the first verse of (l)mirl continued throughout the song. It's haunting. GH is my favorite song, and the mix is not good.

Judging by the recent setlists of their show, the band probably agrees with you too.

I agree with your assessment.

And they have been open about it in the past as well, they have described themselves as being lazy in interviews. I am sure that smoking and drinking plays a role in this as well. They basically hang out together, jam and see what comes out. Now that has produced a lot of great music but also some misses along the way and lately the hit to miss ratio has been getting a little lop side with the misses with this album being the epitome.

You hear a lot of unfinished ideas, or songs with potential that never quite reach greatness and instead end in an uninspired way. (I think of H/W, the song starts off interesting but just builds to meh).

I know they would probably think otherwise but maybe they need a producer at this stage to freshen things up and push them a little bit. I don't think it will happen because it seems like Chino doesn't want anyone criticizing his style or work ethic but I think the other members would probably be open to it.

It would be nice if they wrote a proper bridge for these songs on Gore... this always disappoints me when a band has a decent chorus and verse but can't put that third wave in there to let the song hit it's stride. The songs on KNY had the same issue.

What? KNY had bridges and "third waves" galore. That's one of the reasons it was so great. There were a few songs that could've been fleshed out a little more, but of all of the albums to shit on this band for being lazy, KNY is not one of them.

Other than Teenager and Pink Cellphone, there is no other Deftones song I dislike more than Xenon. There is nothing they could of done to that song to redeem it for me. I like their depressing songs, upbeat, aggressive or whatever, but Xenon holy shit, that one makes me cringe.

Abe is brilliant on Xenon but he's brilliant across the whole album. I don't quite understand the hate for it. I don't think it's their greatest work by any stretch but it's a serviceable song even if it's a bit bland in spots. If we're talking worst Deftones songs I'd place Swerve City and Diamond Eyes well before Xenon.
