Does anybody else think they sound really good?

Gee

I wouldn't say they sound good, but they do sound raw and passionate, and live, in opposition with the vocals of Elite, for instance.

The interesting thing to know about them is that they were recorded in one single take, according to Shaun Lopez. That's honestly what made me like the song.
"When I show up, it's all good" Chino Moreno

Braincleaner

I think they sound painful, which is a good thing considering the mood of the song.

His vocals kind of ruin the song for me..... They sound underproduced.

I think they could have been produced a lot better. Sounds TOO raw.

Fuck off sounding TOO raw, like there is such a thing fuck off.

Always sounded like faux emotion to me, I think there's more to showing emotion than yelling and to me the lyrics aren't really personable unlike songs like When Girls Telephone Boys where the yelling along with the lyrical content creates a lot of emotion.

Wow sir. You've missed my point entirely. There is such a thing as sounding too raw when it sounds like a demo instead of a professionally produced song. Deftones aren't a black metal band, they obviously value good production. This song does not deliver in this department. Your looking at it from the juvenile, aggressive "lets fuck shit up" perspective, but when Chino already was having problems with his voice, why would he leave his part of the song to be so plain? To me it doesn't sound really that aggressive at all, it doesn't sound raw in the sense that I would favor, mainly because of Chino's vocals. I want it to be emotionally raw, not "I did one take, im done" raw. Really, even the instrumental isn't that heavy.... Its good, but not great and relentless.

Also, your talking to the person who ranks S/T as his favorite album, so you act like I just sit around beating my meat to "Sextape" everyday and can't appreciate what you think is a heavy song, when in reality compared to "When Girls Telephone Boys" (my original Deftones favorite), the beginning of "Fireal", "Elite", or "Bloody Cape", this sounds like Enya.

It's pretty fucking raw. Also WGTB doesn't have that professional sounding quality too it either, at parts it sounds low-fi like in the bridge, that doesn't derive from the song at all.  Around the Fur is my top ranked album and I never said a thing about you and sextape, I don't even consider that deftones to be totally honest.

EDIT:

I can agree with that, it comes nowhere near. Just the thought of deftones sounding too raw for someone upsets me because I, like a lot of fans, feel the newer material is so over-produced all the rawness is lost, which makes me a little sad inside.

But that's the point of WGTB, its obviously supposed to sound like Chino is screaming over a phone, (at least that's the way I've always interpreted it). Really though, even if you took those effects off his voice in that song, it would still sound bad ass and evil because hes really screaming his heart out. "Rapture" is not that way, Chino's voice is just simply missing something, and im pretty sure the missing element is real aggression. So, to make that a little better, slap some effects on it. Make it sound dark and evil, instead of half assed. They didn't do that, and thats what makes me have a problem with it to this day....

Its funny though you mentioned Around the Fur because I was going to mention that as an example of sounding raw, but also clean. And I as well don't really consider anything after Saturday Night Wrist to be true Deftones....

See what you're saying but the style of music has also changed I don't know if the whole raw sound would work with alot of the newer material I think songs like Beauty School need that production.

pinkmaggit

I like them just the way they are.
They sound desperate and depraved.

Playhouse

i love his vocals on rapture. I miss this shit from chino

pinkmaggit69

My favorite "Chino vocal sound" is on Damone.

Drinks won't stain this birth!

Rapture is one of my least favorite deftone' songs.
"Raw" is a nice way to describe the song...very sloppy and appears thrown together loosely.
The rythym is erratic with sporadic vocals.

...just sayin'

BillyNo.9

I love that aspect of it though, gives a hectic vibe imo.

I love the ascending riff, then when Chi just does to town on those high notes it's so over the top.
Then that little pause before the guitars come back in is just sick as fuck. Really punchy, gotsta loves it.
And teh keys, how can you not like Franks piano work there? It's so out of theme with the rest of the song but that's why it's so unique.

Yeah I always found the instrumentals really lazy doesn't really sound like there's any note changes  in alot of the parts just the same over and over.
