I'm in there in the Week 4 sales.

Really a shame to see the slow decline over the years that has no regard for the quality of their work (I'd say KNY is among their very best). My guess though is that bands don't make a living off record sales anyway unless they get into platinum territory. Also, to state the obvious, hard rock has been marginalized from the mainstream over the past 10-15 years.

pinkmaggit

Thanks for that info Ixix!, I've always been so curious about that but never thought I'd get to see such a detailed breakdown.
Any figures for ATF?
I wonder if KNY would have sold more copies than DE by now if it had been promoted as well as DE? There's been literally no promotion for KNY, no videos (which I'm very dissapointed by), nothing :(
Why has the label done such a bad job this time around?
I get that music videos are usually expensive to make but it is possible to make a good video on a low budget - no need to spend a million dollars like on the Minerva video! (I still don't get how that video cost so much!)
Even the website is crap and doesn't get many updates. Remember all the videos on the making of DE when it came out.
All that this album has really had to promote it has been the glowing reviews.

1) go to middle of nowhere
2) bring a shitload of equipment
3) ?? ??
4) one mirrion dorrar

DeftonesNZ

Wouldn't they have needed a shit load of generators and stuff just to power all that equipment? I imagine that can't be cheap to use plus all the people that were working on it and then you need to factor in all the costs of editing and stuff I can see where the money would have gone, the videos only a couple of minutes long but they would have shot hours of footage ,plus wasn't there some sand storm or something that delayed everything I'm guessing they would of had to keep paying the crew just to sit round and wait it out.

Thanks for putting that together, interesting to see.

very best
? I'd agree to disagree.
Whoever was in charge of marketing KNY should be fired.

nineteen

KNY has it's own momentum. There are stacks of people who love it on the music alone with hardly any physical promotion behind it.

Also, I think the lesser sales brings up the old illegal download issue, which is a pain in the ass to argue over.

Braincleaner

Well, i think most will agree on the fact that a decline in sales does not have to mean that the quality of the music has declined.
And besides, there was a huuuuge hype around White Pony after it was released, so it's only natural that the 5 week sales for this album was as high as they were.

theshadeisatool

What proportion of global sales do you reckon the US sales figures represent? 50%-ish?

I don't think 100,000 copies after five weeks is too bad in just one country in this current market and filesharing, etc. It's commercially viable.

As someone above said, the whole model for bands making money has changed and album sales aren't as important as they were.

Gee

I guess nowadays for most bands/artists album sales are supposed to reach the break-even point (where costs=revenues), meaning that touring is where the profits come from.

If you think about it, KNY sold roughly as much as Diamond Eyes, without the costs of making the videos (or maybe just one). So my guess is that so far KNY is bringing more money in than DE.

Yeah Gee those record executives are probably aiming to only break even. The Roy a.k.a. The Main Roy doesn't buy that. ATUT.  Absorb that understand that

I never said that. I said they were expecting profits from the tour. They want money, but they're not dumb, they know the tones arent going to sell 100,000 copies in the first week of their album's release.

Spend more time reading and less time finding yourself new nicknames for your posts.

Absorb that, knowing it's pretty easy to understand  ;)

Yeah they've always said their money comes from doing the touring that's why they have gruelling tour schedules.

There must be a reason for KNY dropping 72 places in one week.

Maybe it just wasn't appealing enough to a new audience? Of course die hards like us are going to purchase the album, if nothing more just to at it to our collection. But in all honesty I don't think this album is captivating and powerful enough to draw in new listeners in the way any of their other records could.
They just don't make songs 7 words, My Own Summer, Digit Bath, Hexagram or Kimdracula any more.

Couldn't disagree more. If anything, they changed things up so much as to scare off quite a few die-hards. I feel like there's an audience out there who would appreciate the atmospherics and textures of KNY, but may have already written the band off in the past due to their nu-metal/aggro roots.

Also, I'm a longtime fan, and I'd say Rosemary is better than every song on your list. Even if you don't like the direction they took with stuff like Romantic Dreams and WHTY, there are still several old-school tracks that sound up to par with their previous work, at least to me.

But that makes no sense, they're always insisting on not alienating their fans. How would that benefit them?

DeftonesNZ

It's just the sign of the genre they are in ,With the real popular pop stuff people see the videos on tv all the time or hear the singles thrashed on radio then they go and buy it whereas the majority of people that buy metal type records are existing fans who actually follow bands closely hence the high initial sales followed by a sharp fall ,the people who are buying Deftones know it's coming out so they rush out and buy it as soon as they can as opposed to other genres like pop where people are just hearing about it 3 weeks after release and then going out and buying it, It's pretty hard to find out about bands like Deftones these days with their very limited radio exposure and no music videos released for KNY the only way you could really know about the album is if you were an existing fan or you follow other stuff in the genre.

No they're not they've always said they will make the music they feel is right even though they know they will lose some fans

Chino talks a bit about it here and about how they released White Pony despite thinking people would hate it because they felt the music was right
