I'm sure somebody else has already made this connection, but since it's an almost 600 page thread I'm not going to go back and investigate.

Is it possible the band isn't overly fond of the album? The reason I think this is looking at patterns. For the Saturday Night Wrist tour, they pretty much only played 4 songs from it on a regular basis, mostly sticking to older material, and that material has rarely surfaced in concert since. When Diamond Eyes came out, they toured the shit out of it, playing almost all of the songs, with setlists FILLED with tracks from Diamond Eyes. Now with KNY, they're only playing 3-4 songs from it on the tour supporting it, much like SNW. I just feel like if they liked it more they would play more of it live.

Maybe it's not the case. What do you guys think? KNY has really grown on me over the last few months and I now love it. I'm just not certain the band do.

They've already said in interviews they don't like  it as much as the others, Chino has said it bugs him because he knows they could have done better if it weren't for external pressures from people like the record company, he said he is happy with some of the songs but feels over all it was bitsy and incohesive because of the long time it took to make and also because they weren't working together on it.

Interesting, I hadn't read that. Anybody have any links to these interviews or at least remember where they're from?

Also, it seems weird that at this stage in their career they would still be getting pressure from their record company. And it's not like what they turned in was radio-ready anyway, so that one is a head scratcher. It's also funny that he calls it incohesive since to me it flows better than most of their albums. I mean it seems like they purposefully added transitions between songs so they flowed. Oh well...

It sounds like he is referring to SNW. If he is talking about KNY I'm just as confused as you. One of the major selling points of KNY is that it is incredibly cohesive. Chino has said in interviews that they pretty much made the entire thing together and he feels it's some of their best work.

Was talking about SNW

They usually play about 4-5 songs from KNY on this tour (Poltergeist, Swerve City, Rosemary, Tempest and Entombed being the regulars lately, in late 2012 Romantic Dreams and Leathers).

First thing : the songs from KNY are pretty long (4-5 minutes on average with the exception of Swerve City) so when they play 5 songs from the album it takes roughly half-an-hour of the show, which is a lot. For the same amount of time back in 2010 or '11 they could play 6 or 7 songs from DE.

Second : they have got another LP to their catalogue, so the more they continue to release albums the harder it gets to play songs from each knowing they still have to play enough from the latest.

Third: I don't think we're ever going to see Gauze or Goon Squad live (although I'd loooove to be wrong on that) considering they're pretty hard on the vocals (plus, Chino would have to play guitar on Goon Squad). If we are to be treated with other songs from KNY on the second part of this year's tour, I would go with Graphic Nature and (this would be so great) What Happened To You ?

So that's my guess on this. The band love the album, they've all stated it several times, and, furthermore, well, it shows.

I was also a bit surprised at first that the setlist wasn't more Koi No Yokan-focused. Sure, there are some valid points like playing something from all/most albums (I think they left out SNW?). Some more KNY would be cool, but I think the setlist is pretty sweet.

mr.sinister

Yeah the setlist is ok, but it's so predictable and it's honestly getting pretty stale. I understand they could play anything they want, shit they could play Change and 7 Words and Minerva all night if they wanted to but I do wish they would be more spontaneous with their selection of songs. Would be nice to hear Lovers or maybe Crenshaw come out of left field some day. I think they crowd would go nuts and it would make for a much more memorable show.

I forgot to mention it in my first post, but one of my biggest surprises was the fact that they play more from Around the Fur than from Koi No Yokan. I know the former is considered a classic, but since it was released more than 15 years ago, and KNY just came out, to me it feels kinda odd to be playing more stuff from a really old album (especially when it's half the album) and less from the new album.

But yeah, the setlist is pretty great otherwise. My surprise is mostly due to artists normally building a setlist that is more "centered" around a new album.

DeftonesNZ

The guys have said they like playing the Around the Fur stuff live, plus it's good high energy stuff and it really suits live performance because the songs sound the same as the album but with the newer stuff it's  more complex as far as production so it doesn't sound as good live. But what they're doing now is pretty much normal anyway, 4-5 of the new songs is what they usually do when they have a new album.

Has/Is Goon Squad been played live yet?

When I saw them on the Diamond Eyes tour they played a shitload of Adrenaline songs. More from that album than from any other album. That was a big surprise, especially since they played songs I thought were pretty rare. What I've also noticed is that every tour usually has a new bunch of returning songs that they usually don't play (such Passenger and Knife Party some years ago - they were rare live songs but became staples of the SNW tour if memory serves). I guess it's just them wanting to change things up a bit and keep it interesing. I can imagine it's fun playing songs they haven't done for a really long time, as they're not as sick of them. Or maybe it's just fan service. With experience, they learn what the crowd enjoys.

The dynamics in that song are immense. I would love them to crush the audience with that one then play rocket skates right after. that would be intense.
