That line always reminds of the lyric from "I Got ID" by Pearl Jam the "So i'll lie down and wait for the dream where i'm not ugly and your'e looking at me" has the same sense of feeling un-worthy

from_musings

yeah there's probably a lot of artists that have touched this subject in songs, almost cliché like, but i it works i think. works really well on ppl here because this board is full of losers

I dont see what's so bad about the Romantic Dreams line compared to, for example, "I want to be just like you, then I'd be cool".

it's "I want to be just like you, then I'd be cool... maybe not" i think he's being sarcastic. you can still hate it of course but it's the opposite meaning of what you wrote

I wasnt tlking so much about the meaning, more about the fact that it's pretty straight-forward and simple. Making a list of what a person considers their best lyrical examples and then comparing them to the worst is always gonna make something look bad, but to me it's not like it's the only line in their whole set of albums that's straight-forward or looks lame and cliche outta context. But then, it still depends on ppl's opinions, so it's whatever. I dont think the lyrics are bad, but a different style than is my own preference. For the record, I like his gibberish-sounding lyrics frm Adrenaline,  but I dont think it'd suit him at his age and after so long of it. I dont know why, I guess because it complemented the youthful energy and angst so well, whereas now it'd just be outta place. I cant understand a damn thing he says in Engine No 9 though. I dont care what the lyrics say, that's not english, except for the last word of every verse lol.

Also, the times I listened to Romantic Dreams before reading the lyrics, I thought it was "bed" and not babies, so that's still what I hear.

Bergerac

I had the bad luck of mishearing 'raise' the first few listens.

only pieces remain

this review trashes the album lol

sad to see all the comments agreeing with him :(

but I can somehow see where he's coming from, even though I love the album. it's definitely their weakest when it comes to song melodies. the sound of the album and the instruments (and Chino's voice) really lifts it up. but out of all their albums, I think this is the one with the fewest choruses that hit the spot. he even re-uses some melodies from previous albums. the verses are often better than the choruses.

anyway, the review is pretty poorly written. he wants to point out its flaws, giving it a 2.5, but he mainly writes about how beautiful and impressive parts of it are. lolwut? then he says the negative parts are hard to give a detailed description of. I think that's just lazy and cowardly, like he's trying not to upset anyone.
pray nightfall release me
then i could wander, wander to deep sleep

I can see what you mean Jacob.  It is a very good album though indeed.

lostpilot

I agree with the review wholeheartedly.
It's a good album technically, musically. The band and the producers made a good job.

BUT IT HAS NO SOUL.

Playhouse

I agree with this review, however he lost me when he said Entombed is the highlight. To me that song is the most dull.
I dont understand why he couldn't have recorded or written a different, more varied, original chorus for that track.

DeftonesNZ

Probably because Entombed is really beautiful sonically I think the chorus suits the song it's very simple and has the same sentimental feel ,I think Chino took a Team Sleep approach to this song no big changes and lots of repetition it's just really relaxing and simple

TheShade1989

Entombed feels more like Crosses than Team Sleep to me. The opening line reminds me of Option (the Crosses song) so much. Anyways, the only downside to Entombed is that, though it's a beautiful song and something new that they've done, it's very...simple and repetitive. Not simple by my standards, I cant play a damn thing on guitar, but the finger-tapping or whatever it's called part gets very repetitive after a while, particularly for a long-ish song. I love it, but it woulda been even better if Stephen woulda went even further outside of the box, so to speak.

DeftonesNZ

I play guitar and it's nothing hard to play but I think that was the whole point of it Chino loves songs like that I remember him saying in a interview he sometimes listens to songs that are just the same riff over and over for hours ,That's why i made the comparison to Team Sleep  alot of their songs have those simple riffs that repeat over and over for the whole song with simple lyrics on top like "Natalie Portman/Live from the Stage"  I think it works sort of serves as a break from the more active and busy songs.

Yeah i guess your right. I really dig the verses, i just can't feel the chorus.
I miss his insanely creative phrasing, and melodies.

DeftonesNZ

I think he's made a conscience effort to keep the lyrics simple looking at Crosses lyrics i think he's still capable of writing the real abstract stuff

closertothelung

You're kidding, right? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Chino didn't have that huge a part in writing the lyrics. Crosses was originally going to be various people coming in and doing a song each, but when he went in for Shaun, he turned out to be the perfect fit. I think that's how it went. Regardless of whether he wrote the lyrics or not, there's absolutely nothing abstract about them.

"I wish I could take your hand and make it true.
Cause no one knows how far apart we stay to get through.
Can you say "I swear on the cross"
Can you promise that to the grave you'll take my name?"

"So I wait, anticipate to meet you tonight,
Come this way and I will bring your dreams to life."

etc.

sing blue silver

Everyone's opinions are wrong! Rabble rabble rabble!! I'm really starting to get sick of this place.

Slacker

i wouldnt go that far with the "no soul" argument, but...

as time passes by...it seems quite evident that the overly empathize euphoria that the album had in most of the people at its release, is slowly fading.

it was kinda predictable as it turned out to be one of the most unticipated releases of year...but im not too shure the uber-hypeness of all, did any good.

this is a grower, as DE was, and people just went all-in, on it. no courtship, no nothing.

jaypayton

"Each of the record's 11 songs plays similarly: a bout of chugging guitar leads into Chino Moreno's all-too-predictable vocal chorus"
