I agree with Ves and all his choices for the what lyrics he mentioned from all the albums before KNY (despite the fact that maybe I would have substituted self titled's best lyric for "Somethings wrong with you... and I hope we never do meet again").

Koi No Yokan's lyrics are atrocious compared to the old stuff. I don't see how anyone could really complain about the lyrics to any of the albums BEFORE Diamond Eyes. Most of them painted really vivid pictures in my head, even the ones that don't make sense.

Gee

Lyrics since DE tend to be more simple and sometimes yeah, a bit naive. Sometimes they're bad. Like I said I really don't like Romantic Dreams for that reason.

Yet that line in Poltergeist "I love you to death like you love this game" hits me every time. It also depends of the mood of the song, the context, the way it's sung, etc.

All in all you can feel Chino's positive state of mind in hy lyics lately. Doesn't mean he has to get lazy, but I feel happy for the guy.

Especially the ones that don't make sense.

Looks like somebody likes the old albums and hates the new ones.
For me, I like some of the old and the new.
But yeah I respect all your opinions.

It's all about personal taste. Deftones are just doing their thing. If you can't dig their new stuff, relax and don't listen to it.
In fact why would you listen to a track you don't like? Just skip it and hope that one day they'll do something you'll like that would sound like White Pony or anything that sounds awesome to you.

Is it just me or does Swerve City sound like it could be a sort of homage to the band Swervedriver? That shoegazy verse part has a bassline that sounds a lot like the one in Swervedriver's own Duel. Listen here:

Thoughts?
How neat, I'm impressed.
How did you come to be...so blessed?

if you relate it to a girl it may sounds cliche, but if you relate it to 'your best friend that had a coma because of car accident', it would have a deeper meaning, lol

Chino Moreno:

1995:
"I want to be much then more while I watch you."

1997:
"There's something about her long shady eyes, I'm all about her shade tonight."

2000:
"You move like I want to, to see like your eyes do, we are downstairs where no one can see a new like breakaway."

2003:
"As soon as you came in, all the beasts went away."

2006:
"She haunts the roads. She waits for a new face. I'll cut your armies down and turn your heart."

...

2012:
"I promise to watch and raise your babies."

LOL.

Love how you got pretty much every lyric there wrong, give yourself a round of applause. And I can respect the fact you dislike KNY, but you just look like a child trying to make fun of it. You could just as easily put 'LOL' next to any of those other lyrics.

Well this isn't fair. Every band gets to have a tongue-in-cheek song with simple lyrics.

I don't know if you're a Smashing Pumpkins fan ... but that's kind of what Romantic Dreams reminds me of. Especially with the "I wish this night would never end", really mirroring Billy's own lyrics "Today is the greatest day I've ever known."

Also, I agree that lyrics in the last couple of albums have not been the same. Even though he still puts out some great imagery:

"Forty years in the wind, I've played with you
For the rest of our days, I remain
The sky is falling down, the night is calling you
A star is burning out, the sky belongs to you"

I've spent a week with it now, and I'm in love with this album.  And this is from someone who didn't care too much for Diamond Eyes, expect for a handful of songs.  In fact, KNY is everything I wanted DE to be. Had it on loop the entire week, and with every listen I find something new to love about this album.  Tempest by far is my favourite track...a Deftones classic.  Leathers is close to the top as well - that chorus is some of the most powerful songwriting I've heard from the Deftones.  Very happy indeed :)

Chino is still capable of writing the more cryptic stuff he still does in Crosses stuff probably wants the focus to be on how the music sounds

You're sure about that? I mean I see tons of "then" versions online, and I can't really see what "much than more" would mean.

I added a couple of words and that's about it, they all mean the exact same thing. Way to exaggerate. I'm the child, huh? I don't make fun of it. It just makes me laugh.

Tell you what, I won't post in that thread anymore, be relieved. I don't want to be a pain in the ass to anyone. Cheers.

Chino isnt Robert Smith or Morrissey when it comes to lyrics and words...never has been, never will be...so to the people looking at his lyrics to find some poetic emotional meaning, you should probably check out The Smith's if you want deep rooted passages....shit, check out some Pantera songs, underneath Phil Anselmos screaming, there are some of the deepest lyrics you will ever hear

TheShade1989

To me, Feiticeira, Knife Prty, Korea, Digital Bath, Mascara...that's the kind of lyric style I love. Story-telling but glimpses of images and emotion and whatever. Nothing gets better than that to me. But...it changes album-to-album, sometimes even song-to-song, so it is what it is. I dont see what's so bad about the Romantic Dreams line compared to, for example, "I want to be just like you, then I'd be cool". But different ppl have their different outlooks on everything, including the lyrics.
