You know what Koi No Yokan feels like to me? A mixture between S/T and Diamond Eyes, with a dash or two of Saturday Night Wrist thrown in for good measure. It's a strange combination that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

thats a neverending discussion, i think it doesn't sound in anyway like the selftitled.
I could see "Romantic Dreams", "Poltergeist", and "Rosemary" being on self titled or maybe Saturday Night Wrist if they had Terry's touch. But overall I do agree, you won't get the S/T feeling unless you try hard to make comparisons.

I am really loving Goon Squad right now. The verses are so cool, I love the vocals.
Me too.  I liked Goon Sqaud from the start but it really clicked on my last couple listens. The chorus is growing on me too.

I love everything about Romantic Dreams except the chorus.  I don't hate it but it doesn't do the rest of the song justice.

Def Till End

Goon Squad rocks and the lryics are cool. A real grower along with Graphic Nature and Rosemary.

Big Roy a.k.a The Last Roy  a.k.a. The Deer (bc Roy runs as fast as one) ("was that a deer that just ran down my sidewalk" "no just Big Roy on his morning jog". I've listened to KNY enough to share my thoughts. Chef Royardee's thoughts are as follows: solid album, I enjoy it, it is what the Roy expected. However it does lack a "needles and pins" type song, one that makes Big Roy want to crush some skulls. There's some aggressive songs but NOT in company with some screaming.(Leathers kind of) but not the same vibe even though I like Leathers. To Roy it's a cool cd, good music. KTAB  know that absorb that, BIG ROY OUT.

only pieces remain

I don't think it sounds anything like s/t. a mix of snw and de if anything.

I compare KNY to S/T because it reminds me of Diamond Eyes but with a murkier, denser sound like S/T. Take a song like What Happened to You, for instance. The guitar work on that song really reminds me of something off of S/T, particularly Moana. Now, songs like Leathers, Entombed and Swerve City are probably more like Diamond Eyes meets SNW, but stuff like Graphic Nature, Tempest, Rosemary and Goon Squad have the sludgy, abrasive riffage of S/T, but filtered through the upbeat metal of Diamond Eyes.

Right now I'm thinking this is a great album.  It took 7 or 8 listens but I'm feeling it quite a lot.  What's striking me about this album is that different songs are sticking out every time and favourites can bounce around like no other record I can recall.  Graphic Nature was very enjoyable on my last listen and the last few I've been really into Goon Squad and Gauze is pretty great.  I've really liked Rosemary from the get go but it has seemed to be lacking something but the last couple listens I've been really feeling the vibe.

Does anyone else get a video game music/8-bit vibe from the outro of Rosemary?  It sounds kind of funny in a way but cool.  I don't know why but that's what it makes me think of.

Anyways, this is just a freaking cool album.  It does kind of mix all their sounds into one album and it probably feels more like a journey or experience than any of their other albums.  The order of the songs and balance is excellent.  Way more interesting musically than Diamond Eyes.  Not necessarily better at this point though.

I don't think this'll be a timeless record for me. Right now it's missing that certain something that Deftones records have, but that has been declining with every album since SNW. I can't quite put my finger on it, or rather I can't be bothered to right now...

ToneDef

The only songs I really look forward to are Gauze and WHTY. They're maybe all I'd include on a compilation right now.

ignore the fashion

After multiple listens to Koi No Yokan, I think its a solid album. The only song I really don't like that much is What Happened To You. My favorites would have to be Gauze, Goon Squad, and Graphic Nature. I wasn't really digging the opening riff to Romantic Dreams too much, but its definitely growing on me. All in all I would give it.a.4.5 out of 5.

JESUS CHRIST I LOVE DEFTONES !!!
One last Thing...You Should Beware the Content!!

Thank God that you........ love..... at all.

Big Roy thinks this albums is a great addition to their discography. Roy would have liked to have seen Romantic Dreams as the closer. Overall I don't have any significant complaints. However it would have been awesome to have one of those screaming endings to a song. ex. ATF,Hex,Birthmark,Needles and Pins,BLoody Cape: something like that. That shit gets The Main Roy fired up and is cool as shit can't go wrong with it IMO. My favorite song as of now is Goon Squad, I love the refrain. Leathers and Tempest are close favorites.  Swerve City is probably the song I listen to the least, still a good song. I'm going to hit up Abe this weekend and see if I can check out EROS.

I can get with that, even DE had one of those in Royal.

Does anyone else find some of the songs kind of repetitive? I think that's one of the biggest reasons I have been struggling with calling this album great. I know Deftones have always been a intro verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus kind of band, but they over-do it on songs like Entombed, IMO. Entombed in a nutshell:

Guitar riff intro
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Chorus
Quick bass bridge
Verse
Chorus
Synth + guitar outro

It's really frustrating because the verse and chorus parts are great, but by the third time I hear them, I'm thinking this in the back of my head: "Come on, switch it up." Now, compare Entombed with its SNW counterpart, Cherry Waves:

Synth + guitar intro
Verse
Chorus
Quick synth interlude
Verse
Chorus
Bridge riff Part 1
Bridge riff Part 2
Chorus
Synth outro

Just feels like there's a lot more variation in Cherry Waves, even if there isn't really that much of a difference between the two structurally. One of the reasons might be because the chorus of Cherry Waves has a lot more changes than the chorus of Entombed.

this album is solid. as good as white pony even (yes, classic fans, i know WP is very dear to me too).

i understand that the new direction has lost grit and that sex appeal they seemed to have with ATF and WP ... but man, i really think that's what the band was going for. the music is uplifting and really getting a smashing pumpkins 90's vibe to the fun they are having in these tracks.

Goon Squad is brilliant. First time I heard it, the intro reminded me of Pink Maggit, as well as some of the lyrical content. Beasting track.

Rally Sweat

Went to Iceland for the weekend and the album really suits it. Glad it's part of the memory.

And the repetitive thing: I think KNY is a lot more varied than ST or DE - there's a lot more texture to it as well. Their songs do have a tendency to be pretty rigidly structured but KNY feels a little 'looser' in this regard. Maybe not more than SNW, but it's still noticeable. I don't feel like I've exhausted it yet. Though after DE I could just be cautious about fucking killing it with my greedy ears!

Goon Squad has definitely grown on me too. It seemed a little jarring at first.
