what about this, deftones wanted poltergeist to open the album - but the label thought it might scare away potential new fans and wanted a poppier more accessible track that's more welcoming. you never get a second chance to make a first impression kinda deal

They're all still Deftones songs right so does it really matter? Remember Chino saying he wanted This Place is Death at the begining of DE and that got changed.

not following you... apparently it does matter since tpid got changed? you kinda answered your own question there. imagine if kny opened up with what happened to you and then entombed. it wouldn't be the same record, shit does matter, it's important with a good flow of peaks and valleys i think  :)

I love all the slower more dreamy songs...i really do! But i got into Tones due to the fact they pump out hard shit!

Maybe you should try Pantera or Cannibal Corpse.

Haha no thanks..... I dig Soulfly and Will Haven and stuff but constant screaming i cant deal with! Tones rif it up but its melodic at the same time

Just realize that Deftones never "pumped out hard shit".

So Elite, WGTB etc. they are just laid back easy listening?

teenage groupies? uh what the fuck are you talking about? is shoegaze the new teen thing or something?

if so that rules

"chick music"

that rules, i think i'd rather listen to "chick music" than 90% of what clowny non deftones bands people post about here

I don't know.  Just seems like chick music to me.  I hate it.  I skip that last song on KNY.  It blows hard.

whatever floats your boat.  Doesn't make anyone right or wrong.  Different strokes for different folks.

Dear Internet,

Please do not label deftones as shoegaze.

Sincerely,
Everyone

Dear internet,

this dude has a raiders, skull avatar and is an adult. Don't take anything he says on the internet seriously.

Sincerely,
Everyone

Baiting me with insults? And my adulthood is in question due to athletic sports team affiliation? All because I suggested that shoegaze is a fucking stupid label for a band that cannot be labeled? Sad.

yeah dude the raiders blow, get real

seriously, how is shoegaze a bad thing for deftones? i agree the genere/term can get goofy as hell, but thats a lot better than "nu metal" or "alt rock"

at least they'd get lumped in with better bands than what the general public / fans/ journalist lump them with which is STILL nu metal in a lot of ways, and thats sad.

My loyalty to a team is not based on success and performance. It's called home town pride and loyalty.
Nuff said on that.

I honestly don't know shit about shoegaze and don't care to.  All I know is that it's likely a fad. I don't want them labeled shoegaze just like I didn't want them labeled numetal.

No need to attempt to insult me over that opinion.  Instead, try responding with a mature counter argument.

People are arguing over wether Deftones are a hard or soft band.  Wow. I think they purposefully made the soft songs just to mind fuck us.

It's weird. Now that this album is out, I appreciate Diamond Eyes more. Where as before, it was just the 'newest old' record. Now it's not so new anymore, strange how things work out like that. Maybe with the next record I can appreciate KNY more.

you have a case of what's known as 'deftones syndrome'. Their last album is always appreciated more once the latest arrives.

Well if you know nothing about it then you can't make an informed decision. I don't see how its a 'fad' .. as far as I know its not popular at all. Shoegaze started in the 80s. Modern Post-Rock (mogwai, sigur ros, godspeed, explosions in the sky) is pretty much shoegaze as is some Post-Metal (ISIS, Cult of Luna etc).

Deftones track's i'd say are closest to it are: Beware, Cherry Waves, Konami code, This Place Is Death, Rosemary, What Happened To You.

GrandeJano

Just listened to the whole thing for the first time now. KNY connects with my soul emotionally as much as white pony did a long time ago. I have changed and so have deftones, were both still here and I still feel them. Brilliant album.

Im not making an ill informed decision.  I have decided I dont like deftones labled as anything.  "Shoegaze" is just in a long list of examples.
Relax shoegaze supporters.

So, the CD is plain white.  ??? Better than DE's, I guess. Hopefully I'll be able to buy KNY when it comes out over here in the US.

not to you know sound like a complete nerd, but how is not really doing your research and calling shoegaze a "fad" (the stupid tag has been around for over 20 years at this point), when you just admitted you don't really know anything about the genre a mature argument yourself?

also you taking that raiders dis seriously...man come on, its a msg board for christ sakes

getting back to the real deal here though

the way KNY ends really does kinda leave them open to do even more stuff like that last song, i've talked to chino once about the softer stuff during the SNW tour. he sat next to me at the bar during the opener when they played the 930 club show for that tour. He had a few a ton to say about shit like Failure and My Bloody Valentine. He did say kevin shields is very aware of them and their sound. he said some other things too but i dont really remember and i dont wanna start stupid rumors. i believe if i remember correctly even then we were talking about bands like Drive Like Jehu and such, im pretty sure he said abe was really into them (this was before they recorded the cover) so it was most likely his idea .

it was nice cause i think he was glad we werent talking about ATF or the first lp or something

oh and i do remember this right before SNW they did family values tour or whatever. i called out chino for that, he admitted it was for money

carnivals empty

Picked up KNY on CD today :)Love the album :)

Last reply to this pointless argument.  I said it is "likely" a fad.  I didnt say it is one.  I would never state a fact about something Im not educated about. Sometimes labels can be fads, wasnt numetal?  That was a label.  I made an assumption about what it could be.  This really isnt that serious.

i don't really know a lot about shoegaze but isn't Riviere the closest song to that genre they ever written ? that's one of my favorite songs
