what about this, deftones wanted poltergeist to open the album - but the label thought it might scare away potential new fans and wanted a poppier more accessible track that's more welcoming. you never get a second chance to make a first impression kinda deal

after listening to it more than any other track so far, i could totally see why they originally wanted to open with it.

xToxin

Fuck record labels, for the millionth time.

btw, really enjoying the new album. way better than snw and d.e to me. can't touch the first four though, but was gladly surprised by this new material. i wasn't expecting this to be their best album like many others though, so maybe what i'm experiencing now is a kind of reward/pay off for having low expectations to begin with

xToxin

No way.SNW is better than this.

KNY is better than DE..but yeah not quite at SNW standard...but ive only listened to it 2 days so far

xToxin

Dude honestly I've only listened to it once all the way through.

I don't know if I should give it another chance.

xToxin

It's weird. Now that this album is out, I appreciate Diamond Eyes more. Where as before, it was just the 'newest old' record. Now it's not so new anymore, strange how things work out like that. Maybe with the next record I can appreciate KNY more.

x Rx King x

Romantic Dreams, Gauze, Goon Squad, Poltergiest, and Rosemary are all my favorites through 10 listens.

oh, and who else thinks that the intro to Graphic Nature is a little early Tool-esque?

Playhouse

I really think this is a fucking masterpiece.
I've listened to this about 20 times. White Pony was my favourite, now this is.
Romantic Dreams i believe is one of the best songs theyv written. Haven't been so inspired and amazed by a song in years.

okay, so i caved in because i'm human

i like it. swerve city, romantic dreams, leathers, graphic nature are all solid tracks

winner here is goon squad. it's a song that is pure deftones. this is their sound. "BUT PENICSKE DEY DONT HAVE A SOUND!!!.". bullshit, this is deftones. if you don't like this track, you don't like this band and you can go suck a duck

rosemary, apart from that stupid ass chugga chugga near the end, is lovely.

some stinkers. entombed and what happened to you are bland and boring, too much diamond eyes influence there

the other songs might grow on me more but right now i don't really care for them

chino often doesn't sound good. tries too much. there used to be a concrete wall behind his voice, that wall is now a thin layer of paper. that's too bad because like vesanic said, diamond eyes had this as well and it's one of the reasons that i dislike that album so much. it's also the reason why i can appreciate stuff like crosses. chino's way more dynamic with his ever-changing voice there. on koi no yokan it's mostly SHOUTING SHOUTING SHOUTING which is too bad. slow down old man. be patient. seduce us with that voice. don't shout our pants off and fuck our ass.

so yeah, i'm pretty pleased with this. to me it's another proof that diamond eyes is a throwaway album. if they had released this instead of DE two years ago i would've liked it an appreciated it more.

i also can't help but wonder how this would sound if terry date had produced it.

all these point still stand after a few more listens

definite stinkers are entombed and what happend to you

songs i don't care for: poltergeist, tempest and gauze. though i really like that outro in the latter, wish they'd done something with that for the entire song

They're all still Deftones songs right so does it really matter? Remember Chino saying he wanted This Place is Death at the begining of DE and that got changed. Rapture was going to be the first SNW track.

Second that word.

p.s. I also think this is a masterpiece of an album. I'm going to need an assload of listens before I make my final verdict, but this might be my favorite Deftones album ever.

p.s.s. I don't know if it was the big wigs who changed the order of the album, but I'm glad it happened. I like Swerve City as the opener, and this is the first time in a long while that I've had absolutely no problem with the track order.

I agree although SNW had to grow on me but is now one of my favorite Deftones albums.  This one is clearly better than DE.  It's really hard to say after that.  Why are so many people hating on Graphic Nature.  That song is turning into one of my favorites on the album.  It has a throwback sound to it.  Almost sounds like it could be on ATF.

After many listens I really don't like swerve city an entombed bores me. Also what happened to you is pretty bland. However I absolutely fucking LOVE romantic dreams, poltergeist, gauze, graphic nature and goon squad. It's a mixed bag for me.

Its so odd to read everyones interpretation of this album and then how they compare it to other albums. The last few posts showed a lot of love for SNW and then said that KNY is better than Diamond Eyes, whereas other places dont care much for SNW and think that Diamond Eyes is the best record they done (after White Pony).

Personally, I loved every album and love how they have grown throughout the process. I adore SNW and Diamond Eyes, and I really havent been through KNY to place it anywhere on "my list". So far I feel as though musically it is very heavy and grinding while at the same time has melodies and other things going on. Vocally it is not as aggressive as past efforts, Chino's vocals tend to do alot more 'soaring' than screaming and whatnot.

I like it, once again they have made an album that maintains their style and sound while at the same time being different from their past albums.
