Someone was complaining about Chino's cat call howl loop (right before chorus) in Goon Squad earlier.  I didn't even notice it at first but now it stands out everytime I listen to the song.  I think it's awesome and makes me laugh everytime I hear it now.

I love how the "howl" echoes into silence during the chrous, cool effect. Noticed this since the first listen..

I am loving Swerve City and Romantic Dreams so much. I think Romantic Dreams might be my favorite so far. That or Poltergeist..Or Gauze. Ahhh too many good ones!!!

All I know is Entombed and What Happened to You are both great and all, but too sad/melancholy feeling to listen to often- like Riviere, Sextape, Cherry Waves, Xerces, Teenager, Mascara, etc for me. I know Entombed has an uplifting chorus but the sound and lyrics of the verses are depressing!

Also, obviously Good Squad is great, but why did they have to have the sad/depressing intro...that spans over a minute!! Wish it was more uplifting or heavy like the rest of the song.

Right on. Swerve City just comes on right out the gate! Awesome album opener, and I can't wait to see them play this one live.

Yeah! Hope they break a lot of these out and that Chino can sing them well.

Also, I think the voice effects they put on him in most of these songs is great and brings me back to the vocals a bit in previous albums.

Still kind of can't believe this album is out and we have 11 new Deftones songs :) Almost unreal. The time between the DE leak and now seems like forever...

Yeah! I know what you mean.. It just now kinda soaked in for me that I have the new Deftones album. LOL in the coming days as I continue to listen to it I think I'll know if it's my favorite or not. The more and more I listen, it just draws me in.
Like, I tried listening to something else to give it a break - but I didn't want to hear anything else haha

I dunno, for me this album kinda popped up on me out of no where. After the excitement for DE went down, I started checking out more new music annd bands etc. I've had a lot going on in my life recently too.. so the time has kinda flown by. But these last couple months before the release were the SLOWEST EVER

I knew that cat howl reminded me of something and I just realized what it was.  Check out this clip from the Pantera 3 DVD.  The 1:30 mark is the sound I was trying to put my finger on.  Now go to 3:04 on Goon Squad and tell me that isn't the same sound.  ;D

Hmm...Just realized I make posts and replies is for album reviews and concert reviews/set lists lol
Heard this album about 5 times so far. Twice on computer and 3 times with headphones on. I read these reviews before I started to play the album so here I go...

1. Swerve City : Sounds like a poppier version of Royal to me. Solid opener.  Groovy riff. Sounds too formulaic and safe sounding though. Still like it though. 3/5

2. Romantic Dreams : I must be the only one here that doesn't like this song. I love the lyrics but I'm just cant getting into the rest of the song. Dunno what it is.  Maybe cause it feels like the song isn't blending together or something. I wish the lyrics to this song switched onto Entombed. 2/5

3.Leathers : I like the intro. Totally reminds me of that feeling when you wake up in a drunken haze after drinking heavily the night before lol. Speaking from personal experience of course. Solid deftones song. Abe's drumming skills is what makes this song awesome. Might be too early to say but I think his drumming on this song is the best on this while album.  5/5

4. Poltergeist : Classic deftones song. Vocal style reminds me of ATF and song is giving me general ATF vibes but more refined and upgraded. 4/5

5. Entombed : I don't know why this song is getting so much hate and yet everyone loves What Happened To You. SMH. Yes the song might be simple but it still has SEX all over it. Loving this song. Could have been a Team Sleep song IMO. Surprised no one is talking about sexing to this album yet. This song is perfect for that. I will be testing out my "theory"tommorrow  I hope. :} 4/5

6. Graphic Nature: Another song that I did not like at first but it is growing on me though. As I read on here it does sound very Depeche Mode and White Pony like. Like this song could have been on the b-sides and rarites album. It's ok. 2/5

7. Tempest : Seeing the title makes it sound like this would be a heavy song with killer guitar riffs. But it's not. That gives me disappointment. Repetitive vocals, drums, etc. in this song all around and it's too slow for me. 1/5

8. Gauze : One of the songs I liked early on. I see how people feel it sounds like Risk+976-Evil. Just love everything in this song all around.
4/5

9. Rosemary : Best song on this album. So dynamic and complex. Its like a updated and better version of Beware. I feel like this song describes the overall sound and style of Koi No Yokan. 5/5

10. Goon Squad : I must have ADHD because I get bored and hit the skip button before Chino comes in lol. The intro is too long IMO. Just heard that repeating cat scream you guys on here was talking about LMAO. If I can get past the ADHD prone intro this song may be able to grow on me... 2/5

11. What Happened To You? : I don't feel like this was an good enough closing song. You guys are overrating this lol. I feel like its not long enough and it leaves much to be desired. Sounds SNW like. I know it doesn't sound like Xerces but it gives me those vibes. The bittersweet/melancholy feel.  3/5

7.5/10
I would have gave it a 8 or even a 8.5 if the album had more songs. I would have been fine with this album coming out later/delayed if it was going to have a few more songs on it IMO.
SNW+DE+Sprinkles of WP=KNY
I'm sure my thoughts on this album might change in the coming months...

only pieces remain

I fucking love goon squad so much. such a heavy, fun track lyrically chino thumbing his nose up at pretty much every band but thanking (appreciating )  the fans.

Fuck Romantic Dreams is genius.
And Graphic Nature has such a fucking cool vibe. One of my favourites

josh_axey

Loving the album.

For me it is thematically similar to ST and gives me that same feeling when listening, but musically an amalgam of ATF(15%), SNW(40%) and DE(45%)... which makes sense evolutionary wise, and with a bonus hint of their older sound.

I'm sure most people won't agree, but hey! That's why Deftones are so great; we each get something different individually, but collectively the same exhilaration.

el perro

Sorry if I'm repeating anyone but just realised 'shapes and colours are all i see' from Entombed sorta emphersises the album cover.

BigMood

Right now I just listened while baking and bathing and I must say it is pretty mellow so far. Quite relaxing. An album I could play to my folks without them saying it sounds too depressing or loud :D. Today I'll listen to it some more when I'm going for an 4 hr ride, so I'll memorize some more.
Also I read the lyrics out loud without the music, it's quite funny I must say ^^.
At the moment it sounds like Diamond Eyes Part II. Nothing quite out of the ordinary but really nice and comfortable. Deftones style of course and also very fitting (means every song is compatible with the song before or after, unlike SNW).
But actually I'm wishing for something more crazy, like Digi Bath or Knife Prty. I want something intense with goosebumps and the feeling of something refreshing and blowing-your-mind.
I'm satisfied like a fat kid fter eating an ice cream not like someone after riding a rollercoaster - I want that :D.
"Dude, I totally pulled a Chino Moreno on her last night."

What ever happened to the Tempest music video?

alan1o

i'm still not like chino's vocals. why is the whole thing so high ? where are the signature chino stutters etc.

FNatt

well, after listening to the album for 2 days almost non-stop, this is my top so far :

01.Poltergeist
02.Goon Squad
03.Tempest
04.Swerve City
05.Rosemary
06.Gauze
07.Romantic Dreams
08.What Happened To You?
09.Leathers
10.Graphic Nature
11.Entombed

Loving each and every song, except for Entombed.

TheShade1989

Funny. Romantic Dreams is my top favorite despite me thinking it'd be my least favorite. Just such a brilliant song. And Graphic Nature reminds me of something frm Like Linus or Adrenaline. Not Chino lol just the music. Not sure why, it just does. And Goon Squad, lyrically, reminds me of Elite. I think Swerve City might be my least favorite song on the album. I like it, but it's too...I dont know, light and breezy and repetitive, I guess. Though the rhyming style reminds me of Korea a little bit. Obviously all the comparisons I'm making is just to make it easier, but it's definitely its own album.

The downside to this is that, wen they play more songs frm this album live, Chino wont be jumping around and whatnot. Ah well.

2 more hours...Also, I can't stop fucking listening to this gem

I wish there would have been some kind of short interlude on Swerve City, perhaps something in the style of Diamond Eyes (the song). Swerve City kicks ass, nevertheless.

After listening to the album with Poltergiest as the first track which has the clapping interlude it gave the album smoother start without having that abrupt start to the album with swerve city. They should have kept the original tracklist.
