Dude, I've said this many times, being an artist's fan doesn't mean you have to like everything they do no matter the quality. That's not being a fan, that's being a tool. You're actually more of a fan if you can admit when a song or an album doesn't please you the way it usually does and elaborate with concrete arguments.

I agree with what you're saying, but I dunno.. I enjoy everything they put out. I'm just not super critical of every little thing they do.. I take it for what it is. If they put out some shit music, I would admit it's shit music.. Lucky You & Pink Cellphone should be on the B-Sides & Rarities album IMO (NOT saying those songs are shit. Just saying they are definitely weak) - but this new album is fresh and I personally enjoy it.

I just think a lot of Deftones fans are still stuck on wanting Around The Fur pt 2, or Self Titled pt 2 and aren't opening their minds to them evolving and changing. Yes, they have lost a bit of their aggressiveness that they once used to have - but it's still very much evident in several of these new songs. I think for those that aren't digging KNY as much, it'll grow on them. I didn't enjoy S/T when I first purchased it - but after a month I loved it - and it's my personal favorite album of their's.

hate to say it but the deftones have officially become like every other band thats been around to long...they ran out of ideas, are repeating themselves and are playing boring setlists live...its time break up and everyone go do their sep things and reunite in 7 years

I posted this late last night, but I want to see if anyone agrees with my interpretation of Goon Squad's lyrics.

I think he basically is saying that they were trend setters and everyone knows that.
He spend time perfecting music with a lot of contrast, cutting out shit he has outgrown, such as heavy/groovy music that people used to love about them.
Deftones have been crowned by many as leaders of this genre. They could care less and laugh when people fail trying to emulate their sound. Bands that try to copy them fade into nothing, two at a time. Their kingdoms fold.
But then they write a song like this with ease, no sweat. Designed for us, by him.
He knows people are going to copy them, again, like they always do. Watch the trends begin.
They won't follow suit, they never do. Either way, they will keep breaking in a new sound with us, his friends.

TLDR-He is saying they can write a heavy song like Goon Squad even though they aren't really that type of band anymore. And they can do it better than anyone else has or ever will. They don't follow trends, they set them.

I do agree with you that you can't expect everyone to say positive things all the time, and it's actually easier to point out flaws than what you like a lot of the time. plus, it's usually when people have something to complain about that they feel it worthwhile to open their mouths.

but, I gotta say it's pretty sad and frustrating when some people seem to diss everything they've done since s/t and only comments to say how much the newer stuff sucks. that isn't really interesting to anyone but themselves. if you hate half the bands catalogue, maybe you aren't much of a fan after all?

then there are those who aren't even trying to enjoy the music, but seem to have some sort of preconception that if it doesn't sound exactly this and that way, it automatically sucks. by now, everyone should be aware that this band constantly evolves and will try new things. every album will sound different, so it's kinda sad to see these people set themselves up for huge disappointment every time.

how can you say they're out of ideas? I can agree with them starting to sound more like other bands in some ways, but I think that's rather a result of them having new ideas instead of rehashing old ones.

Yeah, it's not that it's a short album. It just flows from one track to the next very smoothly.

yeah, this is the first time I feel like a Deftones record hasn't been the perfect length. this one could easily have had a couple of songs more towards the end.

nah dude I dont listen to shit like green day or stone sour because they are mainstream and boring...which is what the deftones have become the last 2 albums.....scary how much this album sounds like Diamond Eyes part 2...at what point does Serg get blamed for the demise of this once great band?

Yeah a lot the time i'm like why are you even here you don't like anything they've done for years and you probably won't like the future stuff either ,some people are just set in their ways the music matured and evolved but they didn't
