Thats one song that I thought stands out the first listen.

Teknoman

After many listens I think Selftitled is still #1 on my list but KNY is an awesome piece of art... im not sure if it will take the lead in a near future (but maybe it will do it :P).

I make music too

Rosemary is probably going to be one of my favorite Deftones songs. I like how many different elements they put into that song. It's more of a "feeling" than just a song. Nicely done.

Havoc

My thoughts...Great album. My favorites are Romantic Dreams,Poltergeist,Graphic Nature,Gauze,Rosemary, and Goon Squad...I wore Tempest and Leathers out before hearing the entire album...But out of those two Leathers is better...Songs that haven't grown on me but have parts that I like are Swerve City (the middle to the end) and WHTY...Entombed is a good song but I haven't given it many plays yet. Swerve City sounds like Mein a little...Not the singing obviously.

nineteen

They certainly love the dub type vocals on this album with those echoes.

Sounds great. I haven't got the chills on this album though but I put that down to it being a grower.

Absolutely love WHTY?, Poltergeist, Entombed and Graphic Nature.

Yet again No Grey Zone for this title, you either like black or white but none in between.

Same here!  I also wore the early tracks out and now I just skip them.  :-\ I wish I would have waited but it's pretty much impossible for me not to dive into a new song as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

i also can't help but wonder how this would sound if terry date had produced it.

THIS!

Or SLopez recording/producing the vocals.

I'm digging this. Diffidently more experimenting on their end which is a whole bunch of win. It's like Saturday Night Wrist's glossier prettier sister. Which is a good thing.

Caín

Swerve City
Very sweet bass line by Sergio in the verse. Great sing songy performance by Chino. Love the small harmony touches in the verse. Chorus is straight up banging but hampered by Chinos "Ohs" and its repetetive nature. The "She breaks her horses" line will be forever etched into my memory. Even if it's wrong. 3/5

Romantic Dreams
Very unusual opening riff for the Deftones. Reminiscent of Needles and Pins in a way, but way more moody. Also a prime example of how well Stef's and Chino's guitar interplay works on this record. Gives the song a sonic depth older Deftones sometimes lack for better or for worse. The odd time signature changes are a welcome addition to the Deftones sound but might be jarring to some. Chorus again filled with "Ohs" by Chino. This wouldn't be a problem, but coming off Swerve City it's a little bit too much. Ending drives the simple but excellent opening riff home. 4/5

Leathers
The guitars in the intro sound very uninspired. The bendings do not work and make it sound like somebody is tuning the guitar. The song starts out with a bang but I don't buy it. Chino's performance during the verse is weak both in terms of intensity and rhythmically. Guitar interplay is ace on this one. Chorus has a nice sense of desperation in Chinos voice which makes the higher register work. Overall decent song. 3/5

Poltergeist
Sonically the most SNW era of all the tracks on this record. The verse reminds of Rapture and the unreleased Melanie. Hard hitting and very bouncy. Chinos delivery in the verse again hampered by lack of intensity and lazy rhythm. Bridge may be the strongest part with a very nice riff by Stef and Chinos vocal line contrasting the riff it very well. Chorus has a beautifully understated harmony between Chino and Frank's effects. Great stuff. Claps are a nice touch. 4/5

Entombed
Very M83. Beautiful song. Outstanding by all involved. Stef's tapping gives the song it's backbone. Frank adds tons of layers and gives it the M83 flavor. Chino's vocal delivery is incredible. The new found appreciation for pop melodies just works in the context of this song. Sergio's bass breakdown is on of the most delicate and beautiful thing the Deftones have ever put to tape and have an almost funk/soul vibe to them. But the best thing about this song is the moment Abe switches to the ride cymbal in the chorus. Perfection. 5/5

Graphic Nature
The most unaccessible song on the album. Feels almost as if the band is playing in reverse and gives it a very unrelaxed and tense feel. Until the moment Abe opens up and unleashes a straight beat. Suddenly all the tension is released and you realize how heavy this song actually is. Very subtle work by Frank. 3/5

Tempest
The most sweeping track on the record. It is the only song on the record were the two guitars don't gel too well. Sonically epic, and naturally flowing it is almost flawless in all other regards. Great, powerful bridge that will get you pumped for the impeding doom the chorus will unleash. Defones' own apocalyptic version of stoner rock. 4/5

Gauze
Arabic sounding verse with little bleeps and bloops by Frank. The verse is borderline boring but once the chorus kicks in starts making sense. Still the weakest track on the record. The outro is outstanding though. One of the many instances on this record were the bands sounds like a bunch of dudes making music together and enjoying it. 2/5

Rosemary
Very reminiscent of SNW, Beware in particular. Chino's vocal delivery reminds me of Thrice's Dustin Kensrue, a little too longing and yearning for my tastes but it serves the song well. The delay drenched guitar is probably the best part.  3/5

Goon Squad
Nice intro, especially Franks drone. The song starts out banging, almost in a Stone Temple Pilots kind of way. The verse is straight up rocking. The chorus on the other hand is terrible. the worst part is Chinos looping inhale cat scream. What were they thinking? 3/5

What happend to you?
Everybody saying that Entombed is Koi No Yokans Sextape, you are wrong. This song is Koi No Yokans Sextape. Laid back atmosphere, very beautiful. Stef almost plays his guitar Chino style. Good way to end off the album. Lacks emotional impact, though. Pretty sounds aren't everything. 3/5

Koi No Yokan 3.5/5

we're two, now I get a lot of BSides regarding it, it seems they influenced it especially with a lot of their covers and favourites. I hear Sinatra, Wax and Wane and S/T type in it but with after 2008 Chino in it. Vega is all up on many more than he did on DE, he is more linked now even in Song writing Tho Stef does a lot of the Rythm with his shuggah.

I too think it's the weakest song. it's like it tries to be heavy and aggressive but falls a bit flat. and the chorus doesn't do much for me. still, good song.

Okay here's my thoughts on Koi No Yokan after first listen. DISCLAIMER: THIS OPINION WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY CHANGE!!

Swerve City - I like the punch of the instruments right out of the gate. It just goes off like a bomb and it's an awesome swaying groove. And then Chino starts singing, which is where my complaint with this song lies. Poltergeist would have been a much better opener. The vocals aren't really my thing. They're okay but a little too polished but then the "Oh" part hits and it hurts a little. It would suit me better to just do the "that travel through the air" part and leave those stupid "oh's" out. Also a short guitar solo (if ya can call it that) at 1:43 is strange but it works. For me Sergio steals this song. The bass here is amazingly good. Stepping up his game and I give him props for that. Unfortunately, though this is not as bad of an opener as Diamond Eyes, it's a bit weak. This song get's a 6.5/10 after first listen.

Romantic Dreams - Really enjoy the tempo switches and Abe's playing here. The chorus part is a bit lackluster but overall but I love every other second of the song. The lyrics might take some getting used to but they're not bad. Chino has changed his style completely it seems and it might take some getting used to but it works on this song. 7.5/10

Leathers - Already have stated I love this track. I get the feeling this is going to be a very chorus heavy album. It's a shame because the verses on songs seem to be uniformly awesome and then open up into these big expansive modern rock choruses. But I love this song. Frank's samples are awesome and that crushing breakdown is wonderful. 8/10

Poltergeist - HOLY SHIT!! Fucking love this track. Will probably be my favourite of the album. No complaints here. Some people don't like the clapping intro but I love it. It's fun and groovy and heavy and I really love the lyrics. It follows the chorus-y trend of the rest of the record but to a lesser extent. It reminds me of Melanie in a way. The sporadic verses going into an oddly melodic chorus. Stephen just CRUSHES it here. This is why I like when Chino doesn't play guitar. This could be one of my favourite Deftones songs ever in the long run. 10/10

Entombed - Interesting. This is an odd one and seems very new for Deftones. It does sound more like a Crosses song or something but it's good. It's a slow ballad type pop song for me. Chino's vocal approach to this album seems to fit very well here. It is a bit polished for me and I'm not a big fan of the vocal heavy production here. Probably will be one of those songs I really grow into and put on when I'm in a down mood. Frank really seems to shine on this album though. Frank and Abe are definitely the stars here. The tapping thing is interesting but it's the same for the whole song. It's a pretty song but not my favourite or anything. 7/10

Graphic Nature - Cool groove. Like the guitars on this one. Stephen's 8 string playing has greatly improved from Diamond Eyes. He actually plays the whole thing and doesn't just rely on big thick chords or chugging on the top string. I like the melody and this song just oozes sexiness for me. Still think the title is pretty silly but overall I really like it. Abe steals the show yet again though. That guy just has a fantastic sense of rhythm that continues to amaze me. Also flows into Tempest very nicely. 8.5/10

Tempest - This one has always been a bit "meh" for me. I don't like Chino's intro part much at all. The "brace for the glory" line kills me. It hit's very nice though and has a very cool groove. I'm not sold on this one quite yet though. I really like Stephen's riffs here though and the one scream is very raw sounding. Only thing is Chino follows it immediately with those "oh" parts that I can't really stand all too much. Good song but I can't help feeling a little bored by the time it ends. 7/10

Gauze - DAT RIFF YO!!! Opens with a big crushing punch and then flows into the groove of the verse. Frank sounds great here and Stephens verse riff is awesome. The expansive choruses make yet another appearance and Chino is getting a little self indulgent at this point on the album but it's short so I'm cool with it. Overall this is one of the best songs on the record. It has a vulnerable side but before you can sink into it completely it slaps you in the face with a guitar. I love Stephen's work here and Sergio sounds great. Do I even have to mention how great Abe is? He's the strongest member of the band in my opinion and has always been the one I like most. This song showcases why. The quick hit of the china cymbal on the heavy riff at the opening which repeats at 3:17 is a perfect example of why I love his playing. He accents things perfectly. This is a great song in my opinion. 9.5/10

Rosemary - I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it live then listened too much and got a bit bored with it but now I'm back on that train. I won't be skipping this song. Great song and Chino's guitar playing is actually perfectly displayed here. The whole band shines on this astral journey of a song. It has an atmosphere to it I really enjoy. Not one complaint with Chino's vocals here either. The whole band is on point and it brings a smile to my face. This song is really the focal point of what Koi No Yokan is about for me. It's not the best song on the album but I feel it really captures all the elements of this record and just fits the vibe of the album well. It brings it all together and I really enjoy it. Also some find the breakdown at the end boring but I frigging LOVE it. And that outro riff is a nice little break in the album to take a breather. This is pure romance and passion for me. 9.5/10

Goon Squad - I was very excited to hear this song after the previews. Also I love the title for some reason. I actually use this term a lot at work with the other guys. I'll walk in the lunch room and say "well looks like the goon squad is all here". I've been saying it since before the song title was ever revealed so it's cool that a bit of our vernacular is now the title of a Deftones song. Anyway, for the music I love the riff and Chino's sporadic vocal delivery for the verses. This will probably be another favourite of the album for me. There's not too many high notes and wavering lyrics on the chorus so I really like that. This one grooves and the 8 string sounds great here. It totally pays off for me. Don't really have any complaints with this one. Fucking love it. Feels fresh and different but feels like Deftones. 10/10

What Happened To You? - Good song but not a great closer. Maybe I'm just particular about how this band closes an album because they usually do it so well. I prefer the downbeat building into a crescendo closers like Pink Maggit, Riviere and This Place Is Death so this one is a bit different. It's a strange song for Deftones and Stephen feels almost completely absent from the song. It seems like Chino is more indulging himself here again. I like it but it sounds more like something for Team Sleep or Crosses. Then again I'm not in Deftones and they know better what works best for Deftones than me. I dig the track but it's gonna take some time to grow on me. Cool groove though and the beat is pretty neat. The jury is still out on this one but if I had to rate it (which I do) I'd give it a 7/10

So those are my initial thoughts. As I grow into the album opinions will change and I'll see things differently. One thing is for sure, this is a VERY different Deftones album. It's not their softest record ever as I had predicted and it's also not Diamond Eyes part 2. It feels like the ambition they had for SNW and DE is fully realized here. With SNW they tried to branch out and do something different but it was done poorly with the in-fighting and scattered recording process and the album can suffer from it (don't get me wrong though, SNW is probably my favourite 'tones record along with ST). On first listen KNY hooked me in and it's a satisfying payoff. It seems like DE was the bridge from the SNW and Eros era to this and it works for me. KNY also excels at feeling like a full and complete album. It's not fragmented and flows incredibly well. So overall I give the album an average rating of 8.5/10. It's a milestone for the band for sure.

I think Entombed is terrible.

Thought I was the only one that doesn't like this track.
It feels like an obligatory mellow track to me. Nice change of pace, but feels like filler to me.
Don't think it's bad, but, it's my least favorite
