I think Leathers is the worst song here. And its like a 9.5/10.

9.5/10 the worst song ? So, I guess the album is just perfect ?
Mmm... yeah... ok.
(NO)

What's with you disagreeing with someone's opinion as though they've just said that Shakespeare was born in 1920? The album is pretty much perfect to me, and that doesnt make me wrong, because music tastes differ. Certainly with a band like Deftones, who contain many different aspects to their music.

I'm not sayin' that's good or bad if someone love or hate KNY. I always respect everybody's opinions.
By the way, remember that I still didn't even gave my review of it.

I'm just sayin' that this album is really great but you (you = everybody) are way too excited just because it's something new.

This is NOT such a masterpiece.
Anyway, it's very good. More than I expected.

So someone brought up on here many pages back about how people tend to seperate after the records release... How would yall feel about me starting a group on facebook to keep this society united before everyone goes different ways? It will also be easier to MOD.
yeah man im down

SWEET... I'll keep u posted.
I am a simple man, with simple tastes... And all I want is a pair of rocket boots.

Electron§

Of course its not a masterpiece.... I think White Pony and S/T were there masterpieces. Those two seemed really the best at capturing the whole point of themselves. Every other album kind of meanders past its boundaries in a way which makes it somewhat meh.

Depends what ppl see as a masterpiece. No doubt the album will grow on some ppl, but to others the hype will go away. Wen I first heard DE, I thought it was perfect, but wen time went by, I realized just how simple an album it was. Still like it, but not as good as I thought. With this though, you know, they've gone in directions that tick all the boxes for me, so I can say for me the excitement of new music is there, but that it's not gonna fade by much. Which is good.

I get what both of you are saying. It's easy to get overly-excited at anything new - there have been plenty of albums I've absolutely loved and thought to be the best of that bands career when they come out, then a few months down the line they settle in and aren't quite as high up there - but on the other hand you do know inherent quality when you hear it. KNY is a very layered record, which I think will help give it a really enduring quality. Alot of Diamond Eyes was surface-level.

Now I agree with you both Electron§ and TheShade1989.

I'm just really tired to hear "wooo this is the best they ever did ! masterpieceeee !" like for DE two years ago.
That is not true. Objectively, ATF, WP and ST were their masterpieces.
I love Adrenaline.
I love SNW.
I love DE too even if it's their weakest for me.

I just don't like people screaming to masterpieces just because it's new or when they're like everything just because it's about Deftones.

It's my favorite band too but I wanna stay aware of what I like or not when a new album comes out.

Sorry for my english, trying my best.

deftones86

So I've listened to the album 3 times through. I dont think theres really a weak track on here. there are some weaker moments within songs.  As for the album not being heavy or not like ATF/adrenaline heavy (Deftones have never been heavy in a metal sense) . Really they went left on white pony and never came back.  Except for elite i think this album is just as heavy maybe heavier as WP.  But honestly i havent looked to Deftones for my metal fix since the 90's (if ever)?. I listen to Deftones for something different, and every album is. There are a million bands that could be my favorite, but mines Deftones

Its hard to say sometimes which albums are masterpieces though because like... Adrenaline. I don't consider that a masterpiece, but "Fireal" is pretty much an undeniable Deftones classic. Saturday Night Wrist, another one thats not really entirely great, but I think "Hole In The Earth", "Cherry Waves", and "Riviere" are classics as well....

But yes, in terms of consistent quality within each album, ATF, White Pony, and S/T were the triumph's of Deftones history.

You could also say that those three albums kind of form a full circle, Around the Fur is youthful and aggressive, White Pony is futuristic and mature, and the S/T seems to capture both of those into a kind of indescribable surrealism only captured by the Deftones.

Amdrag

I'm 99% sure that if white pony came out today, many people would be calling it a masterpiece, but tons of people would be saying the same thing "oh it's not a masterpiece, people are just saying that because it's new". Now i don't know if KNY is their best album, or a masterpiece, but personally it took me quite a while to grasp DE from many sides to fully consider it just as good as WP. On first listen KNY is just as good if not better, it is definitely in their top echelon of releases, but it will take me time to fully appreciate all the aspects of the album to appropriately brandish it with the M word. That being said I'm not afraid to call a new album better than WP which btw is not infallible because it's old.

Am I the only the one who's getting a Glassjaw - Jesus Glue vibe from Gauze?
How neat, I'm impressed.

okay, so i caved in because i'm human

i like it. swerve city, romantic dreams, leathers, graphic nature are all solid tracks

winner here is goon squad. it's a song that is pure deftones. this is their sound. "BUT PENICSKE DEY DONT HAVE A SOUND!!!.". bullshit, this is deftones. if you don't like this track, you don't like this band and you can go suck a duck

rosemary, apart from that stupid ass chugga chugga near the end, is lovely.

some stinkers. entombed and what happened to you are bland and boring, too much diamond eyes influence there

the other songs might grow on me more but right now i don't really care for them

chino often doesn't sound good. tries too much. there used to be a concrete wall behind his voice, that wall is now a thin layer of paper. that's too bad because like vesanic said, diamond eyes had this as well and it's one of the reasons that i dislike that album so much. it's also the reason why i can appreciate stuff like crosses. chino's way more dynamic with his ever-changing voice there. on koi no yokan it's mostly SHOUTING SHOUTING SHOUTING which is too bad. slow down old man. be patient. seduce us with that voice. don't shout our pants off and fuck our ass.

so yeah, i'm pretty pleased with this. to me it's another proof that diamond eyes is a throwaway album. if they had released this instead of DE two years ago i would've liked it an appreciated it more.

i also can't help but wonder how this would sound if terry date had produced it.

I don't at all. Plus, Jesus Glue is about a thousand times better, in my opinion.

This. All of this. Especially that.

Everyone seems to be very quick to judge this album as oh-so-perfect. Let's just see how well it fares over time.

I take back what I said about not seeing the Gauze/Jesus Glue link; I can definitely see it in the verses. Further than that, I'm not sure. Jesus Glue >>>>>>>>>>> Gauze, still.

xToxin

Gauze is the best song on the album for me. I didn't like anything else at first listen.

1. Too many choruses I don't even listen to music like this.

2. Thin voice, accompanied by thick guitars and sounds = ???

3. His voice (again) is like higher in pitch or something.

4. It's just not for me

That being said, I won't bash others about their opinion (unlike some people here) It's just that since they have a lot of albums I prefer ones from the past.

It's bound to happen to any band with albums like Deftones have and the different sounds.

The only thing though that has been a mainstay that is gone now, is chino's vocal style the whispery almost indecipherable moaning that made Deftones for me.

That is disappointing, but the band is top notch as always.

I just think that Chino could have experimented more with different tones and pitches and such. The music changes yet Chino doesn't.

It's too formulaic for me to get into.

I'd recommend Gauze to a Deftones fan of older material.

I'd give it a 6/10
