excellent review. Very similar to my opinion on the album. I gave it a 4.5/5
I can't stop listening to it. It definitely lived up to it's expectations.
- oh! and The Life and Times are epic.. but Shiner was better  ;)

dude, slight sidetrack (with a segue back on topic!), shiner totally toured recently! i some crazy how got to have pizza and beers with the members of murder by death, and they mentioned the show they went too.

jason gerken is a bad-ass drummer. i'd LOVE to see a deftones/shiner tour for this next cycle.
how about it, relevant tour management people who probably aren't reading this?
we could be two straight lines in a crooked world.

Very first impressions:

"Swerve City"

Poppy, and very simple. Not much here. I kind of think of it as almost just an intro to the album because it lacks structure really.... Its barely a song. I also get a strange country-ish vibe off of it and it turns me off, also the lyrics seem pointless.

"Romantic Dreams"

This song really blew my mind. Doesn't sound like any other Deftones song, and a little tiny bit poppy, but in the right way, almost kind of like a Weezer mixed with classic rock vibe off this one.

"Leathers"

Bad ass mysterious dark intro (probably one of the best parts of a Deftones song ever), descends into a cliche pop metal song. Meh.

"Poltergeist"

Awesome, explosive, somehow transcendent to the other chugga chugga songs since Diamond Eyes, this era's "Korea" (but still less epic and dark than "Korea").

"Entombed"

Bored me to death.

"Graphic Nature"

A lot better than I expected, love the verses especially.

"Tempest"

Another cliche pop metal song with a bad attempt at new wave influence in the opening.

"Gauze"

A bit disappointed by this one, sounds a little lazy in terms of structure.

"Rosemary"

Futuristic and spiritual simultaneously, sounds like it could be a lost Led Zeppelin classic. Potentially the best song on the album overall. Feels the best put together and satisfying. Closest thing to classic Deftones I think this whole record has.

"Good Squad"

I can imagine the intro being the music to someone overlooking the skies, as nuclear weapons slowly make their fall to destroy every trace of sweetness from the existence experienced by that someone.... Then the bomb hits and its something completely unexpected.... Not an explosion..... Its Good Squad! :D Pretty good song, sounds murky and unusual. Favorite part is around 3:34. Once again reminds me of Weezer right there.

"What Happened To You?"

I don't find anything particularly interesting or experimental about this song. Its once again like "Swerve City" barely even a song. It sounds like an idea that was too quickly finished without a further glance or an attempt at being different from the usual style which is just way too simplistic to really feel affective.

Coming to the end of this album, I feel kind of incomplete. All the ideas feel rushed and not very well thought out even though some of them do work very well. Deftones really need to strike a balance between efficiently writing songs, and the original long drawn out process. Because obviously taking forever doesn't work for them, but It does generally create highly satisfying material.

This sounds like Saturday Night Wrist, Disc II to me  :o. Consider me shocked, didn't see that coming. I really like it though! I can even hear a little Self Titled at times in the riffs.
get bored.

Honestly Ladies and Gentelmen?

From 1 to 10........????? I still have less than a week to go...OVERALL?
9.3/10  it's damn near perfect Deftones.
It's got a new sound, but it's of course Deftones. It has elements of all of their albums (except Adrenaline)
It's lush, beautiful, aggressive, heavy (when it needs to be).
The whole album flows very nicely from start to finish. I don't think you'll be disappointed my friend.

I dont know, the beginning of Graphic Nature (before Chino sings) reminds me of something frm Adrenaline or even Like Linus.

Ah, such an awesome album. It's funny though, because everyone was hyped up on DE too, but eventually the hype wears off and a lotta ppl changed their minds. So it'll be interesting to see everyone's thoughts in a month or two. Even the ppl who dislike it, it may grow on them. Personally, this is gonna be in my top three. My favorite two Deftones albums are White Pony and the self-titled album. After that, it's all kinda mixed. This is gonna be third favorite at the very least, if not higher.

To me, this album is perfect in that it contains influences of all of their past albums, but they're still going in new directions too. The only thing that could possibly make it better is if they added two tracks; one with that brutal, pure emotional screaming like Hexagram (though Chino's vocal abilities have changed since then, so that's illogical), and one like Deathblow in that it's so dark that you just cant help but feel despair. But that's just because those two sounds are rare for them nowadays, but it doesnt matter to me. Perfect album for where they're at now, in my opinion. Said it before, but it's definitely their most experimental and out-there, dynamic and textured, album since WP.

What's with you disagreeing with someone's opinion as though they've just said that Shakespeare was born in 1920? The album is pretty much perfect to me, and that doesnt make me wrong, because music tastes differ. Certainly with a band like Deftones, who contain many different aspects to their music.

I think just as weird, but in a very different way (ie, weird but not as light; ST meets SNW). That's how I picture it in my head.

This one turned out to be weird in a different way than I expected, I expected it to be much more spacey or psychadelic. The intros thing didn't really prove to have much effect through out the whole album except on "Leathers". And I thought the same of Eros, but I think your probably right in suspecting its like ST and SNW. Looking at the recording session clips and hearing some of the samples from that era, makes that idea seem very likely.
