Why do record companies seem to constantly insist on the weakest songs on an album being the first single.. Don't get me wrong Tempest is a decent tune but it's definatley the weakest on the album..

to me... it makes total sense. its attraction will be broad.

Probably why it got switched with Swerve City. I think Swerve makes a better opener though.. Over time, I wouldn't want to hear those claps every time I put on the cd, but I enjoy the claps after Leathers. I think it was a good move to switch the two last minute.

How so? DE was very simple, whereas KNY, to me, is them going in a more experimental, new direction than their previous albums. I dont get ppl calling it mainstream or commercial either. Even Chino. It's not as heavy as their other albums maybe. It's gt no songs like WGTB or something to that effect, but to me it's plenty heavy. But then I guess it depends on what you look for the most frm their music. So you dont really like the album?

Word.  I don't think it sounds like a sequel to anything.  Much different than a lot of things they've done but still somehow sounding exactly like Deftones to me and no one else, really.  There basic core influences were always there and still are of course, but it definitely holds true to the expansive thing that's been said.  It also sounds way heavier to me than Diamond Eyes.  There are only so many ways palm mute/chug and scream.  It's a different kind of heavy but it's heavy.  Sounds HUGE.  Nearly perfect album in my eyes.  Around the Fur will prob. always be my fav. for a lot nostalgic reasons but White Pony is a close second and this album is easily just as good.  To me, it has the near perfect flow of Around the Fur and the more experimental, expansive, not as "angry" vibe of White Pony.  It doesn't sound like either one of those albums, not does it sound like Diamond Eyes but it does sound like Deftones.  Grown and expanded.  Same as they do with every album and will continue to.

The different kind of heavy is all the layers and atmosphere provided by Frank... and the traditional downtuned riffs.

I agree.  But that's not the only thing to me.  Frank has always been there and he grows and expands as well.  They're playing the same just... expanded and not the same old riffs and structures or ways of playing them.

I did see an interview recently where Chino was saying he wanted a different song but the company wanted Tempest.... I think the band should have that creative say

Hmm... good point. Youre right, the clapping would get old at the start of the cd. Swerve just dives right in.

Yeah, well.. Tempest was always going to be a single. But Chino and the band wanted Swerve City to be the first single. But, in hindsight I'm kinda glad they saved Swerve City. It's the better song, and it's impact is greater having not heard it until today.

Anyone notice that the echoing inward scream isnt present at the end of Rosemary before Stef goes off on that heavy quadrouplet riff in the album version, but in the cassette rip it's definitely there?!

It's not on the cassette version that I have.  Weird.

Someone responded a page back that it was added in by the uploader, taken from a Crosses track.

Oh pffft that sounds like a lot of trouble to go through to add an extra scream..

it's very very simple. especially considering the Crosses inhale came from the vocal stem itself.

No point. The band makes the music, the record company are tryna get as much money frm it as possible. If they think Tempest would be the best single, then that's what it'll be. I do think some other songs woulda made better singles though.

Yes! It does. After I downloaded the rip, I quickly burned it and hopped in my car. It startled me at first cause I had my stereo turned up loud.. I was expecting maybe a slow build (kinda how Diamond Eyes does) lol but yeah.. I love how Swerve just comes right in swinging! It fuckin reminds me of White Pony so much..!!

It's probably a highlight for me. That's more to do with how it fits into the album though. Sounds great where it is. As a single, you're probably right.

Yeah, I know it's not that hard to do. I write music in Ableton and Reason. But just seems like a lot of effort to just add one extra scream in there lol

The label is never good at picking singles for them. I remember Chino talking about how the record company said White Pony didn't have any singles after Change. Uh, hello? RX Queen? The chorus is "Because you're my girl", fer fuck's sake.

I don't feel that way at all. Instead, I feel as if it's a logical progression. Diamond Eyes showed the band's growth by stripping it down and focusing on the songs themselves. Here on KYN I think they're made a concerted effort to change it up, not just delve into walls of sound that envelope everything but incorporate a lot of pitch changes and chord progressions rather than drone away at the same groove. Chino isn't just wailing away on the chorus and mildly singing throughout the album. He is singing throughout. You can tell they're locked in, feeding off each other and working together as a unit completely.

I didn't think the band was possible of changing it up like they did on 'Romantic Dreams'. I assumed they would be content to evolve within their bubble and flesh out the small recesses of their territory. I was wrong. They broke things open. The album in my eyes is nearly perfect.

one thing is certain: chino should have no problem with most of these live. i wonder if they will ever start 'jamming' out on stage and holding riffs out longer and improvising. thoughts?

Is anybody else getting that "Lovers" vibe on goon squad? ... goon squad sounds like Lovers+MX .. and something else to it .. but mainly lovers and mx..
