How many times did Chino say "Inside" on this album? Has to be a record

Romantic Dreams and What Happened To You? Stand out far ahead of the rest. Decent Album kinda wished they went more similar to S/T era than DE era song types.
Self Titled is still their best album. It was the perfect blend of passive aggressive energy. Its hard to believe the same band that made Hexagram, Damone and needles and pins made a song like "Entombed".

Why is it hard to believe... ST also included Anniversarry of an unintersting event.... which wouldn;t feel all that out of place next to entombed

Yeah.. I'd have to say Lucky You & Pink Cellphone are more random/unDeftones like than "Entombed"

Swerve - straight to the point. Hard hitting from the start. Not too long, not too short. Kind of an intro to what the rest of the album has in store.. Very soothing vocals.. I am loving what chinos doing on this album lyrically.

Romantic - after reading the lyrics. I think this song is without a doubt about chi (think about it). The lyrics are awesome and the guitars sound great. Abe is killer as usual. Sergio stepped his shit up, big time.

Leathers - this is what you'd expect to hear from deftones, it's a great song and really gets me excited for the next few songs.

Poltergeist - wow. My favorite song on the album... After the 30 second preview, I was unconvinced about everyone's love for it... I get it now.. It's old school deftones. From chinos delivery to the heavy chugs and the beats all around.

Entombed - total departure from anything they've ever done... Another favorite from the album.. I want to see them play this live. Maybe a set closer. I dunno how to explain why I love the song. From the sampled drum beat to the guitars to Abe and frank and Sergio. It's just flows from mellow to dirty. Probably going to be my favorite deftones song ever.

Graphic nature - first half of the song I'm not a fan of, but them the song starts to pick up. Not my favorite song. Might be a future skipper.

Gauze - one of my favorite opening riffs.. The the verse riff happens. Wow. These guys are letting it all out. If this song doesn't become a single then Warner have no fucking clue how to market these guys. I fucking love that verse riff. Frank is very loud in this song. I love it. The end of the song is pretty killer.

Goon - intro sounds team sleepy. The build up before the singing is pretty boss... Again more chino vocal magic. The delivery really works really well. The chorus is a tiny bit weak. Main riff is pretty damn good.

What happened to you - brings everything back down to mellow you out and end it on a high note. One of my favorite deftones closers since white pony.

Nice. Your review sounds a lot like mine.
What do you give the album as an over all score out of 5?

I'd give it probably 4.8/5

Chino isn't just wailing away on the chorus and mildly singing throughout the album. He is singing throughout. You can tell they're locked in, feeding off each other and working together as a unit completely.

That's where it doesn't just work for me. I think his new singing style is excessive. To be a bit less vague, I'd feel the same way if Stef tried tons of impossible guitar tricks on each track. It's just too much to me.

i feel ya, V... his new style through me for a loop. its growing more and more (personally). its brand new and i cant wait to see where it leads...

Spot on.... Pink Cellphone still doesnt really grab me.... Entombed already has and Anniversary is one of my all time favs

They're mixing it up. It seems alien to you? Not natural? I think Chino's new style vocally makes sense. He can still hit the highs he did consistently without burning out his voice or sounding half assed either. He seems to be feeling the lyrics and the music more it seems, provoking the longing, care or desire in his voice.

I really enjoy this album top to bottom. Give it time? It might grow on you. If not, maybe the Deftones are just moving beyond their well established parameters and it's pushing some away? We're all entitled to our own opinion. For a two year gestation period, I don't think they could have made anything better.

I really don't want the band re-hashing everything they've done. I don't want to angsty aggro of Around the Fur. I don't want the ambient acerbic day dream of White Pony. I don't want the angry, fist clenched attack of self titled or the unfocused, yet at times spectacular Saturday Night Wrist.

I love that the Deftones consistently evolve and push their sound, not resting on their laurels or being complacent. I think they had something to prove to themselves with these last two records -- Diamond Eyes was that they could strip their songs down and make straight forward music without (Chi) a major driving force in their band and Koi No Yokan was that they could create beyond their areas of comfort and expertise, try to flesh out something new and grow.

I'm probably reading far too much into all this shit.

Either way, I love the band. I think the album is great and I'll stop rambling.

Word. This was my review after the third listen.

Koi No Yokan overall impression: This album is lush, beautiful, heavy when it needs to be and very emotional. Each song compliments each other so perfectly. The albums flow is very consistent. Definitely an album that you will listen to as a "whole" rather than skip thru to your favorite tracks; mainly because there aren't any "skip" worthy tracks.

1.Swerve City - This one immediately grabs you right out the gate. It's bouncy, the vocal delivery forces you to sing along. It's a great opener. Short and sweet, to the point. Classic Deftones!
2.Romantic Dreams - This one took a couple of listens. The opening riff is very different from the typical Deftones sound. But it comes on and takes you right away. Chino's vocals are awesome. Very loud and agressive at some times and very emotional at other. I love the song structure of this one a lot. The chorus is very catchy, in the way "Minerva" is.
3. Leathers - This track I immediately fell in love with. It's got that raw guitar riff that Stephen is adored for. The time signature is bad ass. Makes you nod your head.. loving the lyrics and vocal deliver on this one.
4. Poltergeist - Easily one of the heavier tracks. It's a nod to their Around The Fur days. I simply love it. Makes you want to punch someone in the face. The chorus is so haunting, and I love the aggressive drumming. And that guitar riff during the verses, are you kidding?! That shit rocks!!!! Holy Fuck!! (Easily my favorite on the album)
5. Entombed - Alright, this song from the get go gave me chills all over. It's just simply a beautiful song, nice bass interlude from Sergio. Words can't describe this song.. It's that fucking amazing. "Shapes and Colors are all I see.."
6. Graphic Nature - This one is grooving right off the bat. Abe's drumming, the gritty guitar tone, and Chino's haunting vocals.
7. Tempest - This one grew on me, but only after a couple of listens. It seems to be everyone's least favorite, but I think it is a solid track. Especially in the context of the entire album. The chorus is catchy, but it still retains that Deftones vibe. Although, it is a little long, and it does tend to linger for a while. I enjoy it.
8. Gauze - This song is a banger! Also, easily one of the heavier tracks. The guitar riff hooks you immediately and has your head nodding. Chino's vocals on this track, especially right when the chorus kicks in gave me chills. It's very melodic but pounding at the same time.
9. Rosemary - This one impressed me right away. It's definitely one of their best songs to have written. I love everything about it.. the chorus "Stay with me as we cross the empty sky".. so emotional. The outro leads right into the next track perfectly.
10. Goon Squad - Starts off very slow and chill. Frank is very apparent on this track, and it builds up to give way to this monster riff that crashes through the synth. Another solid heavy one that will have you jumping up and down.
11. What Happened to You? - Starts off with a very mathy drum pattern. This track is just as beautiful as "Entombed". Abe's drumming is very obvious on this track, it's mellow with Chino crooning. I love it. Great closing track to a beautiful album. Really rounds everything out.

Over all I have to give this one 4.6/5. The album art really represents the overall mood of this album.
As I have said before, I try to not have any expectations for their albums, because I love everything they make and this album will speak to me. It's a very solid album, I will be enjoying it for years to come.

Around the four-minute mark of Goon Squad, you hear this kind of whispery/scratchy/distorted thing (frm Chino, I presume), and it kinda reminds me of parts of MX or Lhabia where there's a similar thing going on. Very nice.

Overall, KNY does feel like a sequel to DE, to me.

How so? DE was very simple, whereas KNY, to me, is them going in a more experimental, new direction than their previous albums. I dont get ppl calling it mainstream or commercial either. Even Chino. It's not as heavy as their other albums maybe. It's gt no songs like WGTB or something to that effect, but to me it's plenty heavy. But then I guess it depends on what you look for the most frm their music. So you dont really like the album?

LoL no kidding. It's a sequel only the sense it directly followed DE. How can such a die hard fan draw that conclusion. It has way more depth/layers than DE. DE is as straight forward rock radio friendly as they will ever get.

Haven't listened yet. Just got home from work.

If there's one thing I can say critically of the new album, it's that the sound clip of people talking during the bridge of "Romantic Dreams" is completely unnecessary - the song would've been JUST fine without it.

Word.  I don't think it sounds like a sequel to anything.  Much different than a lot of things they've done but still somehow sounding exactly like Deftones to me and no one else, really.  There basic core influences were always there and still are of course, but it definitely holds true to the expansive thing that's been said.  It also sounds way heavier to me than Diamond Eyes.  There are only so many ways palm mute/chug and scream.  It's a different kind of heavy but it's heavy.  Sounds HUGE.  Nearly perfect album in my eyes.  Around the Fur will prob. always be my fav. for a lot nostalgic reasons but White Pony is a close second and this album is easily just as good.  To me, it has the near perfect flow of Around the Fur and the more experimental, expansive, not as "angry" vibe of White Pony.  It doesn't sound like either one of those albums, not does it sound like Diamond Eyes but it does sound like Deftones.  Grown and expanded.  Same as they do with every album and will continue to.
