Stef has been the weak link ever since he strapped on that 8 String. His riffs are boring now. DE ending and rosemary ending are practically the same. Chino has surpassed him here on KNY from what we have heard stef isnt very creative anymore just "chugga chugga, chugga chugga, chugga chugga"
What do you mean on the new stuff Chino just plays small bits of the same riffs Stephen plays

chino has gotten more intricate in his guitar playing no one here can deny that! no more riffs like "Change" or "riviere" by him the "Rosemary" main riff he plays is awesome and so is "beauty school" Those at least to me show he has improved greatly

And thats totally fair but of the four KNY tracks we have heard I think that Poltergeist is by far the worst. But I could be totally wrong cause I think a studio version may be great, but the live version is a mess, to me.
I'd say it's certainly the simplest but studio version should sound way better

Agree with you there. And not to change up my statement about Stephen being a "weak link" but what I meant was more that I've always felt his playing may have been the only thing holding the band back creatively. If you can gather what I mean by that.

For me, Stef gives room for the other instruments. Quite a skill when you're a metal head.

It's understandable how you could think that but iv'e seen many interviews where Stephen says he would like do more advanced stuff like meshuggah style songs but the guys want him to keep it simple they says he technically the best musician ,he said that the rest of the guys just aren't suited for the more advanced stuff because Abe couldn't double bass pedal and Chi was still finger picking at that point.

Yea he's definitely stepped up but no way he has over taken Stephen those riffs mentioned are really easy, most of the time Stephen writes the riffs and Chino plays the same but in a higher tuning

I agree with what youre saying but I also would say that I think that whoever thinks (at this point) that Deftones are a metal band are just flat wrong. Would you really want Abe playing double bass? Stephen playing hardcore riffs over Chino screaming is over. I understand thats what some people want to hear but...why?

I have not seen Chino "shred" metal stuff like Stef. But would argue that he is as good guitarist. Both technically and creatively. Apparently, he even played bass on a few songs on Eros. So Chino seems to be able to handle many instruments, and have always had a good sense of songwriting.

No i not saying i want it i'm saying Stephen said in a interview he would like to do some meshuggah style songs but the others guys wouldn't be able to do it,i like them just how they are

laurapalmer

He's been doing Meshuggah style riffs forever.

Yeah Chino's a very good writer especially those soft little riffs and outro's,Stephen also has played bass that riff in Needles and Pins is him on a bass and he also played drums on I think it was Anniversary of an uninteresting event, technically Stephen will still have to be better he plays on a eight string and has been playing for ages he knows more techniques aswell Chino can't finger tap. Yeah Chino's just a natural writer he's good stuff on all type's of instruments including piano (I love FYIHYD) i'm sure if he focused solely on guitar he could catch up to Stephen.

Have you heard meshuggah? their alot different lots of weird timings and more full on,It would make more sense if you played guitar you'd see the style difference

thats nonsense about Abe. He can double bass and if you look at his set up he actually has a double bass pedal. He just doesn't use it on 'tones tracks, and i'm totally cool with that. I like the fact he doesn't

It's just what Stephen said i know he can double bass but not for a whole song, I prefer Abes drumming style actually

I think this is probably the stupidest debate I've seen on here.  You all need jobs and girlfriends or something.

I know newbies tend to get a lot of shit on here but I thought it was about time that I made an account! I started lurking around on this forum just before DE was released and have followed Deftones from an early age (parents and all that..). Looking forward to hearing and discussing the new record!

The irony is that the comments about people debating are just as annoying as the debate.
