The thing I miss the most about the Deftones of old is how a song would sound very convoluted upon first listen (mostly owing to Chino's off-kilter -almost anti - melodies) but would make more sense after every subsequent visit until finally you reach what I like to call the "def-enlightened" stage where you totally "get it" and you find new layers in the song every time you listen to it from that point onwards. Now, Chino's vocal delivery has become very straightforward, like a traditional rock singer and less like the ethereal entity he used to be on albums like the s/t and Around the fur and is resulting in the songs themselves coming across as more accessible and less cerebral.

And in spite of all that, 'Leathers' and 'Tempest' are still really good songs and they manage to retain the core elements of the classic 'tones sound. That, ladies and gents, is why Deftones will always be my favorite band.

This shit is dead on. I still to this day will by accident listen to a tones song I didn't care for in the past and will consequently be hooked to it for a week straight. I just recently came off an adrenaline binge. Was hooked on pretty much every song on that album for like a month straight where as before I would only listen to 3 or 4 songs off it.

This is spot on.

This was what made me love them, the textured and cryptic sound, not very straight-forward.

Tempest2012

No offense but I think everyone should wait for the entire album to be released before saying that they aren't as cryptic as before.

My thought: Stop freaking talking about videos, like as if that's interesting.  BOOORing.  Hahaha.
Do we need your permission to talk about things in here?
Yes.  And don't bring my mom into it.

I had something like this the last few days.  Usually I'm not into ATF that much as a whole but I've been enjoying it quite a lot lately.

I'm telling you, it's simply his singing style that changed after Self Titled. At least that's what it is for me.
Well I guess there's nothing to worry about then because Saturday Night Wrist contains Chino's best singing.

100%
YES this is exactly what the difference is. I still absolutely love leathers and Tempest, but i do somewhat miss that hidden ethereal (hard to get on first listen) sense of melody. I guess thats what team sleep had, and crosses didn't. Not saying that this is a bad thing....

Im still so pumped for this album.

Definitely. Team Sleep had it. Some of the Crosses songs still carry that vibe though (Prurient for example).

But yeah, we've kinda lost that mysterious vibe with Deftones. Tempest still hold some mystery to me though. Leathers definitely does not -and is closer to DE, in that way.

I wish Deftones would release the cover already.  I'm hoping it's that one on purevolume and think there's a good chance but I want to know for sure.

I agree that Chino's voice doesn't really have that "ethereal" quality on Leathers and Tempest. To me, that's his best quality as a singer and one of the reasons Deftones really stands head and shoulders above other bands. Even some of the Crosses songs have it (1987, Trophy, The Years, etc.), while others desperately needed it (thholyghst would be a perfect song if his vocals had just been "airier", because he came up with some great, unique melodies for that song). He can still do it excellently in 2012 (the verses on Razors Out, for instance), but I guess you have to take into account the wear and tear of constant touring or maybe him wanting to try different styles.

I also swear that the verse melody on Tempest sounds really familiar. Maybe that's because its just generic? It's catchy, but it's missing the "wow" factor that so many great Deftones songs have. To be fair, Leathers has grown on me a bit, so maybe Tempest will too.

like amazon.sites like allways do that so they can get a idea of what they will sell.the offical pre order
