Both Tempest and Leathers are great songs.
Its 2nd day my thoughts about ''it shouldnt be the single'' is changed.
Leathers would be better as a single but im ok with this song.
I wish the video would be good.
But it is Deftones Video and it is never good.
Yeah come to think of it the majority of their videos have been shit or just forgettable ,although I do like the street carp ,BQAD and Digital Bath videos they focus more on the music and capture the energy well, the Change video had a good concept but was done poorly with bad transitions.

you speak as though you expect these guys to put out cool videos. What, you lookin for some kinda deftones-influenced Steven Spielberg shit? Deftones make good music, not cool videos, and that's all that really matters. As a matter of fact, music videos have kinda always sucked, imo. the coolest/most intruiging ones i've seen lately are Silversun Pickups "Subsitiution" and Disturbed "The Animal".

Substitution is TERRIBLE!

I don't usually talk shit abut other bands.  At least on the internet but DISTURBED is terrible  ::)

LOL... Jesus. the convo was about music videos. I'm not a fan of Disturbed. I AM a fan of SSPU. BUT.... the videos are the only two that i found the slightest bit interesting because of their uniqueness. I hate music videos. A lot. But those are the only two i recall, and that ain't sayin too much, ya know?

Why don't we just wait for the rest of the album and maybe some of it will have some of the 'Tones of old?

My thought: Stop freaking talking about videos, like as if that's interesting.  BOOORing.  Hahaha.
Open-minded?  Here's some short videos to challenge your thinking:

I'm telling you, it's simply his singing style that changed after Self Titled. At least that's what it is for me.

xToxin

Sad to say but I think some of the more experimental lyrics/styles were influenced by his heavy drug use.

Keep in mind that Terry Date left after ST as well. That has a lot to do with the "sound" of Chino changing as well.

Cropduster

Reminds me very much of the Smashing Pumpkins...

I love it, but strangely, it doesn't sound very 'deftonesy'.....it's very light in it's atmospherics, very positive...it's very 'clean'...

The verses are very 90's grunge...

I'm well aware of that. I just think he's changing his singing style because maybe he's bored with the old one. I haven't heard him live recently with the older material, does he sing it differently too? Or does he use his old style?

The thing I miss the most about the Deftones of old is how a song would sound very convoluted upon first listen (mostly owing to Chino's off-kilter -almost anti - melodies) but would make more sense after every subsequent visit until finally you reach what I like to call the "def-enlightened" stage where you totally "get it" and you find new layers in the song every time you listen to it from that point onwards. Now, Chino's vocal delivery has become very straightforward, like a traditional rock singer and less like the ethereal entity he used to be on albums like the s/t and Around the fur and is resulting in the songs themselves coming across as more accessible and less cerebral.

This is spot on.

And in spite of all that, 'Leathers' and 'Tempest' are still really good songs and they manage to retain the core elements of the classic 'tones sound. That, ladies and gents, is why Deftones will always be my favorite band.

I still think a lot of it is just how its recorded. I mean I feel like as an artist he is definitely switching things up here and there.  He has sounded the same live ever since his vocal surgery in 2001. Prior to that surgery he defiantly had more of a full sound live.

Good point man. Convo: DEAD. Fuck MTV, and all music videos period. Moving on, i DON'T think Deftones will ever be on that same vibe like the ATF era, as I'm sure you all are very well aware of. But I do see how some people take the songs we have from KNY and think, "Man, they're going back to their roots." I have to agree and disagree. One can't deny, the guitar tone they had on DE is very prevelant on KNY thus far. Is that a bad thing? Not at all! In fact, I like that tone. Is it the tone on ATF? Hell no. No similarities, really. I think the song-writing has been a resemblence of DE, but far more lengthy and more in your face. I'd say this is shaping up to be a lengthier S/T, which is fantastic, S/T is one of my favorites. I think that all major opinions should all be in wait until the album is unveiled in its entirety. What we have now is beautiful, heavy, and at times, it's ambient. Overall, just very diverse. Personally, I'm just gonna sit on the sidelines and roll with the punches when it's released.
