No offense, mate. I love the distortions on WP and S/T as well, but I still kind of like his clean style of singing e.g. on Tempest. Shows me that he improves as a singer  :)
I love his clean voice on the slower sweeter songs like sextape and riviere as well would just like to hear the texture back in the more upbeat songs like tempest.

xToxin

Yes he abandoned his moans, and his thick distorted voice that was barely decipherable. An integral part is missing, but they always move ahead. So you should expect it. We already have 4 albums of that style, the first four. So just go listen to those, I guess.

xToxin

I just keep it in the back of my mind that, for the past two albums theyve had the singles being the weakest songs on the album.

beaverwithfishyshoes

Chino doesnt want to "complain" in his lyrics, but musically both are pretty whiny. like, not beautifuly minor, but really desperate of tone. so these still have a big emo-ish outcome.

Both Tempest and Leathers are great songs.
Its 2nd day my thoughts about ''it shouldnt be the single'' is changed.
Leathers would be better as a single but im ok with this song.
I wish the video would be good.
But it is Deftones Video and it is never good.
Yeah come to think of it the majority of their videos have been shit or just forgettable ,although I do like the street carp ,BQAD and Digital Bath videos they focus more on the music and capture the energy well, the Change video had a good concept but was done poorly with bad transitions.

you speak as though you expect these guys to put out cool videos. What, you lookin for some kinda deftones-influenced Steven Spielberg shit? Deftones make good music, not cool videos, and that's all that really matters. As a matter of fact, music videos have kinda always sucked, imo. the coolest/most intruiging ones i've seen lately are Silversun Pickups "Subsitiution" and Disturbed "The Animal".

the chorus in tempest is good.hell, it's a good song. it just think i could've been even better if it was presented in another way.less redneck hillbilly rock vibe in the verse. It has a lot of potential - maybe it will sound more like deftones when they play it live.

No if you actually read what I said I acknowledge they never make good videos but the ones I do like are the ones that are basically of them just performing (focused on the music) not "deftones-influenced Steven Spielberg shit"  as you so eloquently put it.

I think it's great, and i prefer it over Leathers. I thought Leathers was a kickass song, if that says anything. Just wait for Romantic Dreams, y'all.

Not really digging the lyrics too much dungeons and dragons fantasy type shit especially when he is talking about ancients and stuff I can't relate to the lyrics at all makes me feel like I am just listening I don't feel included if that makes any sense lol
what? and, huh?

Change_Lestat

I'm in love with Tempest... really. Poltergeist, Rosemary, Leathers and now Tempest is showing to me that, maybe, Koi No Yokan be what i was waiting since S/T!

Really loved it
"I put my life on the line for you... So why did you say goodbye to me?"  The Wretched - Attack! Attack!

Change_Lestat

Lyrics is awesome... For me it's like how disturbed the doomsday is and how lost they're in the moment it happens... (in this case, two people, i think it's a couple)...
"I put my life on the line for you... So why did you say goodbye to me?"  The Wretched - Attack! Attack!

dictatesofreason

Idk yet i was amped up with Rosemary, let down by rollerderby and again somewhat amped up by Leathers, and now Tempest is good, i like it but it sounds..like they are going to to motions idk..i like it but for a single, they shoulda ran with Rosemary.

The thing I miss the most about the Deftones of old is how a song would sound very convoluted upon first listen (mostly owing to Chino's off-kilter -almost anti - melodies) but would make more sense after every subsequent visit until finally you reach what I like to call the "def-enlightened" stage where you totally "get it" and you find new layers in the song every time you listen to it from that point onwards. Now, Chino's vocal delivery has become very straightforward, like a traditional rock singer and less like the ethereal entity he used to be on albums like the s/t and Around the fur and is resulting in the songs themselves coming across as more accessible and less cerebral.

And in spite of all that, 'Leathers' and 'Tempest' are still really good songs and they manage to retain the core elements of the classic 'tones sound. That, ladies and gents, is why Deftones will always be my favorite band.
How neat, I'm impressed.
How did you come to be...so blessed?

i know what you mean, listen to pink maggit and then tempest, the former is light years ahead in terms of artistry and experimental creative depth. Before i get railed for being a WP fanboy I could say the same about fireal and tempest, mascara and tempest, lifter bla bla bla. I think deftones fell off after ST, i still like their music and style, its just no where near as interesting as it used to be.

Vesanic

Agreed. A couple of highlights in SNW and then, that was about it. My opinion, of course.
