now, this I like. I enjoy Chino's newfound ability to sing clearly, and I like him and the band experimenting.

this actually reminds me of Jane's Addiction's latest offering. especially Chino's vocals in the verses.

Dont you think he struggles with it though? his voice is wobbling away at the beginning a bit like on the crosses tracks, even though the vocal melody is basic it doesn't sound like its coming naturally to him

Leathers is generic as fuck to me, and as far as I can tell, theis is generally more into underground/dark/ambient stuff, so I thought he'd prefer Tempest.

You're fucking mental. Stef's riffs in leathers are bad as fuck and Chino's vocals are hella spooky. Open your ears son.

My best friend just told me that he likes the song but that the singing style is too much like Crosses.

i've been warning everyone about the downside of chino singing in too many side projects, that it can be hurtful to deftones music. did they listen? no."the more side projects the better" they think. yet here we are. if crosses wouldn't have existed, that negative opinion of his wouldn't have existed. just saying.
personally though, i thought of crosses mostly in the intro of the song

LOL @ "I warned them...did they listen?" You sound like you're auditioning for a post-apocalyptic movie. Extra funny with your idea for a potential Tempest video.

oh, i'm just talking about the intro in here, which made me think of crosses the first time i heard it.and i made sure it was the intro i was referring to. but the intro isn't the whole song, far from it... like korn's daddy as an example - yes the intro has choirs, but it's not a munk song and doesn't make me think of munks in a monastery as a whole. it's pretty brutal and make me think of other things.
some parts in tempest really have a rock n roll cowboy sound to me which colours the vibe as a whole more than the intro bc it's just an intro.
if they would dress up like the supersuckers in a video to it would make sense to me.weird as a deftones song but still ok

That is laughable.  Just saying.

to me it was pretty spot on bc i got a spot on examlpe to back it up. that said, i think the majority of ppl are chino fan boys that don't get bothered if it sounds like side projects

I don't think he's struggling at all but rather is using his voice differently in parts.

Tempest=depeche mode influences

I agree and in the iPod it goes!

Agreed. The first minute is pure DM. The rest of the song (chorus especially) also bears their influence.

I beg to differ, I think he's trying to sing more 'pop', basically as clean as possible. After years of screaming his lungs out and ops, it's not really a surprise that trying to sing like brandon boyd is an impossibility.

It's not a bad track, just doesn't have the creative depth they once had, there's no edge to it, just pretty sounds and one token scream to remind you its deftones

@Bza : I'm not a Tool fan (although I like them), but you're right mentionning them, the guitar riff could totally be from them.

This being said I like the track. Could have easily been on SNW, between Beware and Cherry Waves - soft intro, threatening riff, tempo changes, explosion, 6mn length. I think DE was probably a break from this new musical direction. I only know Leathers and Tempest from KNY though.

But still, if this theory stands : Eros. Must be. Fuckin. Amazing.

Edit : sorry for the double post. I'm tired.

tempest is meh. I'm sure 99.9% of the people that like it are tool fans. I personally fucking hate tool, not sure if that's relevant or not but ya. It might grow on me but I doubt it. Leathers assrapes tempest.
cant hear any tool in tempest at all

What?  Since when were Deftones grunge?  Anyways, for now I'm trying to hold out on listening to this song until I have the whole album but you guys are already making it very difficult.  I must say I'm pleasantly surprised you seem to be liking this Vesanic.  Are you sure it's not just "newness exciteness"?

Also, what the heck, since when are singles over 6 minutes long?  Really has me excited and all the more not wanting to hear it yet.

You've heard (Like) Linus, haven't you? And you might know that Hum used to be one of their main influences. There's definitely a grunge vibe in some of the Linus songs.

Nah. Happened to me with Diamond Eyes so it would make sense but no, really. For example, I don't like Leathers.
It seems to me I listened to Linus once but I can't remember what it sounds like.  I guess it can't be very good.

hmmmm anyone noticed the one on soundcloud is 6:06 long
and the one spin is 6:19 and higher quality?

Yes - I would prefer the purevolume rip to the Soundcloud one I have, if that's possible.

bewareofrats

You people are kind of scaring me off this song with all the comparisons.  I've heard mention of APC, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Tool, Crosses, etc.  Kind of dulling my excitement.  Maybe that's good though, it can help keep me from listening to it.

I tried to rip the direct stream file but no luck. Sorry, guys.

I really hope this album isn't going to have too much Crosses influence.  I like Crosses but I definitely want much more edge in this album.
