My favourite part is the bridge section (at least I think it's the bridge). To be honest, it's kind of a song full of choruses anyway.

For me it's powerful and positive song, definitely not dark. Well, given that both Hole in the earth and Rocket skates were both below the average level of their albums, with this first released song my hopes for KNY are pretty high. That and also the fact that Deftones have never released an album which I didn't like.

EH, now that I think about it, you're right. I take that back. not dark, more like aggressive ambience. They've had much darker stuff (Digital Bath, majority of S/T)

alan1o

its not dark. its upbeat and kinda commercial.

I wouldn't call it commercial. Maybe the chorus is a bit straight forward and pop-ish but it's nowhere close to how poppy and commercial DE was. This sounds like Deftones got some of their balls back. I love DE but this is a great improvement already.

I think there were a few tracks that weren't so accessible on DE as some people claim... like YSTB, Beauty School, and TPID.

Moz

What? Apart from the crappy chorus, Beauty School was straight up pop.

LOL.  I've gotta wonder what pop music you guys are listening to that sounds like anything the Deftones have done.

Shit like this is what makes me think all Deftones fans are morons.

I beg to differ... that song is one of my personal favorites off of DE. The chorus is excellent, imo. The guitar riff, I'll admit, is pop-esque, but i would never label it as such.

I came in this forum waiting for the song and after I have read most of your opinions, I'll be leaving. I can't believe how negative and demanding you all are. I think the song is fantastic, its exactly what I would have wanted to hear form them at this point.

Yeah Beauty School is a straight up pop song. I thought it was the most marketable song on the album. I love the album but Sextape, DE, Beauty School, Rocket Skates, 976-EVIL, Risk. My friends and I all refer to it as the Deftones pop record. I was expecting more of the same this time around but Leathers seems to have a bit more grit to it. It isn't as polished as any of the songs on DE and I was very nicely surprised by that. It's got your big lush DE style chorus I guess but the verses attack too much for it to really be in the same league. I'm enjoying it even if I think Chino belts it out a bit much for his own good here. So far it has impressed me at initial reaction level more than anything on DE. Will it stand the test of time? I'm not sure yet. It doesn't scream classic or anything but maybe once I get into the flow of the album I'll appreciate it all in context. So far, I'm a fan.

Welcome to SL, where nothing is good enough for anyone ever. That's not exactly true though. You're always going to have differing opinions and those who are upset are more likely to be vocal about it. Those who love the song are too busy listening to it over and over and telling all their friends how great it is. If people shitting on something bothers you, you're sure in the wrong place. That's a lot of what goes on here but I'd say this song is getting much more of a positive response than a negative one.

Don't let them influence you. The only opinion that counts is your own.

For balance, I enjoy reading other peoples thoughts/opinions on the song as it's good to get a different perspective.

it's so simple to look at every little thing i do wrong. it's so simple to overlook every little thing i do right.

I dont find this to be a negative place at all. Just because someone doesnt like something doesnt mean theyre being negative or rude or whatever. Its all about delivery and i think people keep it pretty respectful here. Anyways its nice that ves isnt a blind follower who automatically likes everything that comes out of deftones. It doesnt make him any less of a fan. Quite the opposite.

Apart from the titled-song Diamond Eyes really doesn't sound too "poppy" for me, even if I had to admit that the accessibility of most of the choruses bothered me at first. But then I liked them all and found them interesting and now they're all standing the test of time. I think DE will remain as a classic.

The chorus on Leathers exploded to my face right at the first listen, but after a few others I'm already kind of bored with it. So I'm gonna stop listening to it know, but I fear that soon it'll end in the same category as the Diamond Eyes song (which I skip almost every time).

But like nineteen said the bridge ("wear your insides...") is really kick-ass.
