Love the song. I do like to hear more of Chino's mellow crooning; but the high pitched yells and screams are always good too.

Wow, as soon as Vesanic says he doesn't like chorus, about another twenty people come out and start saying words to the same effect.  Talk about sheep.

nah it just is

think someones line "woke up and didnt remember the song at all" is a good review of the track

BobArmpit

Absolutely love the song. I cranked it up the first time and when the guitars hit it actually scared me.

I like the creepy vibe behind the whole thing. The chorus is actually one of the best things about the song for me. Im glad Chino is actually drawing his voice out. I know the breathy short whisper type style is his thing, but its nice to hear him stretch his lungs out on the chorus.

My take on Leathers....from a big time Deftones fan that doesn't post here much....

Chorus is ok. Nothing Original there. It does sound a tad Commercial. The Intro shows promise for the Album since it shows some of the experimentation the band has been talking about with KNY. Personally i absolutely love Rosemary. Leathers sounds more like a good filler 3rd track but seems to fit in with the whole broken relationships, tension within relationships theme that Chino commonly sings about, and its guaranteed to be be on KNY given the artwork and meaning behind the phrase KNY.

So while Leathers is nothing Epic in itself I really think it shows great promise from what to expect from the album (inner conflicts, relationships, spirituality) so i am pretty psyched about that.

I hope the chorus on much of this Album goes the direction of ATF which in my opinion is signature Deftones and what makes then so Unique and Badass. So raw sounding and addicting. I am talking about the type of Chorus where Chino is sort of whisper talking like on MX for example, or Mascara. The type of thing So underated among deftones fans. Hell, even do the whisper in the verse instead of Chorus such as he does in MY Own Summer.

What I hear on Rosemary is more of what I am talking about. I hear Signature Chino there. Not so much on Leathers.

But with all due Respect anything Deftones puts out is 10x more listenable then anything else out there.

Okay. After a good nights sleep. This is so far the best Koi No Yokan song I have heard. Really has a SNW vibe but at the same time sounds super dynamic and energetic. Something SNW severely lacks.

BobArmpit

When they talked about dynamics I wasn't sure what to expect or if they were just throwing the term around like some bands do. I actually hear the effort they focused on. That part towards the end where it goes from soft to hard again with Chino's scream over top is chilling.

I listened to the song at least 10 times last night and when I woke up this morning I had no memories how the song sounded at all. Not a good sign :-/

do you think they'll play Leathers tomorrow?
Gentleman, you can't fight in here! This the War Room!!

My take on it:
It's not an amazing track, its not a bad track either. I wasn't massively fond of Rocket Skates or Diamond Eyes (singles) from the last album.

For me the tracks I enjoyed more weren't released as singles. This has been the case with a number of deftones records since White Pony. Wasn't a fan of HITE.

I'm excited to hear what these longer songs have to show.

quietcolor

Musically, the track is super tight. Lots of layers and textures, etc. The vocal harmony is not the greatest thing he's ever done and does sound a lot like Combat (though Combat is legend, so no complaints). Where the song truly stands on its own, to me anyway, are the lyrics. I first had no idea what a song called Leathers could possibly allude to. Yet after hearing it, the literal approach of a snake shedding its skin and striking its enemy is just so sick and rad. Where else do you get lyrics like that? Final verdict is, better and better after each listen. A near 5 minute song that plays like  2.5 min song.
it's so simple to look at every little thing i do wrong. it's so simple to overlook every little thing i do right.

I've listened to it more than 50 times (61 times according to my iTunes), and I think I've developed a good, solid opinion. I'd say that it's like a really dark SNW. It's practically the love child of SNW and S/T. But that's just my opinion on this particular track, who knows what the rest of this album will sound like (disregarding Rosemary and Roller Derby). I love Leathers. Simple as that.

Sett

For me it's powerful and positive song, definitely not dark. Well, given that both Hole in the earth and Rocket skates were both below the average level of their albums, with this first released song my hopes for KNY are pretty high. That and also the fact that Deftones have never released an album which I didn't like.

nineteen

My favourite part is the bridge section (at least I think it's the bridge). To be honest, it's kind of a song full of choruses anyway.

EH, now that I think about it, you're right. I take that back. not dark, more like aggressive ambience. They've had much darker stuff (Digital Bath, majority of S/T)

alan1o

its not dark. its upbeat and kinda commercial.

I wouldn't call it commercial. Maybe the chorus is a bit straight forward and pop-ish but it's nowhere close to how poppy and commercial DE was. This sounds like Deftones got some of their balls back. I love DE but this is a great improvement already.

I think there were a few tracks that weren't so accessible on DE as some people claim... like YSTB, Beauty School, and TPID.

Moz

What? Apart from the crappy chorus, Beauty School was straight up pop.
