This album is excellent. I'm still trying to absorb it. It's so different that anything they've released and honestly any other band in general. I can't make a comparison with any other Deftones album at all. It stands alone in my mind. I can't even describe my emotions fully while listening to it. Almost a depressing feel for sure and creepy-ish. It's like listening to a soundtrack for a 1980's space horror snuff film. I can't yet say where Koi No Yokan falls on the scale of the other albums but it's definitely in the top 3 and could rise even further. Romantic Dreams, Tempest, Entombed, and Goon Squad stand out the most to me at the moment. I'm looking forward to fully absorbing KNY in the coming days and giving it a final verdict.

I know it is natural for people to compare it to other albums, but really that would be doing KNY an injustice. There are a few parts that are reminiscent of older songs here and there, sure. Other than that though KNY seems to be a departure/change almost as drastic as WP, but in a different way. Not like from brutal (AtF) to softer(Wp), but more in their core sound. Previously, no matter how heavy or soft a certain song was, it would always have the Deftones feel. You could hear 10 seconds and pretty much know it was Deftones. That is not the case with KNY.

Someone earlier mentioned a "bubble" they were in. A very big bubble. They always soared around that bubble, explored every angle. Once in while they would reach the edge and reach out. On KNY they ripped out of that bubble and went soaring, but they never forgot to look down once in a while to reflect on where they came from. The results are magnificent.

I am fucking stoked for the future of Deftones. Hopefully 2 more album + Eros....but I feel like we will get one more and MAYBE Eros. Oh well, 7 STELLAR records. A symbol of consistency without ever becoming stale.
When people whisper it makes her nervous.

alright. i guess i'll do a track by track. waited too intensely for this to just give it a sentence or two. gonna type this as i listen on my good headphones for the third or fourth time since getting home from work (though, probably the 9th overall. heh.)

swerve city - dat meter. almost instant air-drumming. much better opener than diamond eyes. on first listen, this was a "fuck yeah" moment right out of the gate.

romantic dreams - holy shit, for anyone who ever doubted cocteau twins' influence on chino's vocals, try to deny it after giving this one a good listen. fan-fucking-excellent. what's being said in that spoken sample? that some straight up whispers-in-everlong stuff. good touch. the line "i'm hypnotized by your name" made me nod my head along in agreement when i first heard it. this was the song i most anticipated after watching how excited chino and sergio were when talking about it in an interview. glad it worked out.

leathers - the one that started my intense anticipation. oddly soothes your with this haunting drone, then rips into your chest without hesitation. even after all the pre-album listens, i'm way into this track. features some of abe's best drumming on this album, AND they cut! throughout this album actually, i'm really happy with how the drums are mixed. the lyrics in this chorus, especially when it was first released, hit hard while i was dealing with some craziness in life. still love it.

poltergeist - if self-titled/snw got high and hooked up, this would be the lovechild. love the effects on the vocals and the way they harmonize with the guitar in the chorus. verse riff just hammers. essentially the epitome of deftones. driving guitars, dynamic vocals, rhythm you can't shake. one of my favorites so far.

entombed - had a lot of hopes for this track and it lived up to them. the verses remind me of  the life and times (sidenote, people should listen to them dudes) in a great way. great atmosphere, dark harmonies, and dissonant guitar line dancing all around it. "shapes and colors are all i see" might be my favorite lyric on this album, minus the leathers chorus. might have liked this better than whty? as the closer, honestly.

graphic nature - between stef's playing in the verses and abe's hi-hat work, there is east coast post-hardcore sweetness ALL UP IN THIS SHIT. guitar tone in the chorus is wicked. can't get enough of it. abe is the man. also, chino, these lyrics are clearly about my relationship with my ex. mostly, this: "i'm aware of the demons that you've tucked away. i like to watch you release them. go on and say... tell me how you do it. every time, it takes my knees out. every time you do it, i'm surprised." thank you.

tempest - steady, unrelenting heaviness. not as jagged as a lot of other deftones, but still packs a great thump. as i may have mentioned before about this track, i'm super into sergios line throughout. simple and exactly what the song needed. frank's work here, as in all of these tracks so far, is excellent. can't have a great meal without proper seasoning.

gauze - war drum intro. siren-y guitars. little bass flourishes. digging the isolated guitars in each channel for sure. also, the little frank bits in the back ground. gnarly 8-string thickness in that sludgy outro riff hit me. especially on the first listen. i believe i smiled sitting alone in my car.

rosemary - hadn't ever noticed the high strings sample in the intro on the cassette rips. gives it a nice tension during the buildup. slower riff, of course, but it fits. outro fades well into goon squad.

goon squad - intro goes for same dynamic change as leathers, but with just a slight crescendo at the end, which helps it tons. one of my favorite moments of this album from the very first listen. this song is where i think the white pony comparisons are the most appropriate. super catchy chorus/hook. has that 1999-2000 deftones swagger with the musical refinements they've made since then. great track.

what happened to you? - honestly was kinda not into this song at first. it's grown on me though. it's solid song and a really interesting departure, sonically at first, but i feel like because it is so different in the opening moments, it doesn't flow terribly well with the rest of the album. so, maybe it's just the sequencing of it that bothered me. again, i feel like entombed would have been a bit stronger closer. still, good tune. also, don't know if this is the first this has been mentioned, and i hate even saying it for how obvious it feels, but these lyrics made me think about chi immediately (once i could make them out, of course).

overall, yeah... i really like koi no yokan. relieved that it definitely makes all that ridiculous anticipation seem justified. like i've seen some folks say, it's got a different feel to it than anything prior, but it takes bits and pieces of everything in their back discography. the way they put it all together is what i think makes it so unique. chino wasn't fucking around when he said "it's a hot record." most definitely. contender for the top spot even. which is surprising and exciting.

thanks for reading my attempts to have intelligent opinions!

i love deftones.

Loving "Romantic Dreams" so far. But sounds very weird for a Deftones song........

"Poltergeist" also is sounding considerably bad ass. I have to admit Ive always had a strange love for the song, but seem to completely forget I like it at all if Im not listening to it.... I even clapped along with the clapping part it when I saw them..... I felt stupid doing that..... But thats how much I really like it....

I'm not saying it's a bad album but how could people say that it's one of the best record in Deftones discography ? Come on guys.

IN WAVES

Wow! 9/10 from me. This has to be the rock album of the year. Nothing less than that. WOW!

What makes this more enjoyable is that I listened to this album with my cat, the same kind as the Deftones cat, sleeping right next to me. lol

Well, I listened only to Tempest, just to compare its quality with the official download and I liked the official one better even though it's only 160 kbps or something like that.
That's not the main reason I didn't listen to it. I just want to whole experience - picking up the CD, removing the foil, paging through the booklet. Then taking my headphones and just listen to it for an hour...Oh yeah :D. Don't get me wrong, I just hate to listen music just as a background noise. Especially new release of Deftones. I don't understand the people who were listening to the leak and posting in the forum at the same time.
