What??? Steph didnt pick up a 7-String until the S/T album.. They used 6-String guitars on Adrenaline/ATF/White Pony, and the first album was in standard tuning and progressively dropped by a half step down until he used the 7-String. I completely lost faith in this review after I read that. Maybe its just because hes not a guitar player but do some fucking research.

if this is your definition of pop then you need a serious reality check.

i keep seeing people shoot down anyone who mentions pop music anywhere near a sentence with deftones in it and i feel i should point out that pop music does have a fairly broad definition depending on how much you've studied music.

...there are core elements which define pop. Such include generally short-to-medium length songs, written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), as well as the common employment of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and catchy hooks.

so, you know, some of their music is definitely written with more of a pop structure to it. diamond eyes, for instance. it's not necessarily the direct comparison to one direction everyone's treating it as. just that some of their music is not as off the beaten track as the rest.
