everything from the cover art to the tracks we've heard points to it being the spaciest/dreamiest and most atmospheric record yet.  that's just my style.

I hear ya, and especially Rosemary demonstrates this side of Deftones, which has always been what I love the most with this band. they have yet to outdo Knife Party though, in my opinion. it will always be the epitome of that dreamy ethereal sounds for me. I wish they'd one day write another song like that.

This. Yes, Jacob. I feel the same way. Rosemary has quickly reached that pinnacle of their catalog for me.

To me, Rosemary is a song about two people that are lovers taking a hallucinogenic together. LSD comes to mind, but it could be anything else (shrooms, X, etc). Tripping with someone you love can be a beautiful, enthralling experience, and I really feel like Chino is trying to demonstrate that kind of visceral experience through this song. I know i am probably wrong, but that is one of the great things about Deftones. The lyrics can be interpreted in many ways.  ;)

Longtime casual fan here. Just wanted to chime in and say that "Rosemary" might be my favorite Deftones track ever, just based on the cassette rips. I love White Pony, but if I'm being honest, it always felt like they were reaching for something on that record that just barely eluded them... and now this song finally does it perfectly. I guess it's the whole atmospheric thing that they sort of drifted away from (slightly) on subsequent records. What really pushes this over the edge is the "sail with me... cross the empty sky" bit. It's that excess of gorgeous melody and atmospherics that finally perfects the style they established with songs like "Passenger" and "Change."

I think "Leathers" is very much in the same vein, but a bit more concise and radio-ready; I love it too. "Tempest" doesn't impress me as much. I've always liked this band for their sense of melody, and it's just not that aggressive or interesting on that front. However, I have very high hopes for the record as a whole and imagine it will serve an important role in the overall flow.

To be fair, as I said, I'm more of a casual fan and Deftones would probably rank somewhere just outside my top 10 favorite acts of the 2000s. Just thought I'd add that perspective into the mix.

I have to agree as well. Knife Prty and Cherry Waves are my two favorite examples of that style, and Rosemary joins those songs in that category. In fact as I mentioned yesterday, for me Rosemary is my favorite of all in terms of dreamy sounding songs.

I am a longtime hardcore Deftones fan (favorite band for 14 years and counting. Funny thing is, I agree with you on everything. Rosemary to me is also the pinnacle of their melodic/ambient side, especially the "sail with me..." part. That part is undoubtedly THE most beautiful part of a song I have ever had the privilege of listening to. I also feel the same about Tempest....though it has grown on me a bit after repeat listens. Thanks for posting though! It is nice to hear an opinion from an objective point of view.

I'm a newbie here, but this album feels like a very confident and mature mix of SNW and DE.  I'm just thrilled to see the band maturing like this.

Poltergeist lyrics:

WHAT CAN I SAY!?
A GETCHA CHIGGA NOSE
A GETCHA CHOMINA, SOMINA-HAI, GET SAY IT...
WHIIIIIIIIILE JUST SAY IT.....
A GETCHA CHIGGA BOGA,
CHIGA BOGA WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

That's all I could muster before the chorus.
