How so Matt? I am curious...

Thanks!

Haha, like I said, it's a precarious subject and I don't like speaking in generalities. To be candid, the stereotypical hipster quota was high, a dominant presence even. I know that claim can't be substantiated and is mostly based on fashion cues,  but it was a little odd for me. Anywho, no judgement, just observation.

Much respect,
-Matt

Chino is a hipster. Always waring plaids, his hair is in a combover/pomp style, wears JEANS!!!  He likes Cocteau Twins and like Hip Hop.. How ironic.
Holy shit...everyone is hipster.

I'm so fucking sick of this word.

p.s. not aimed towards you Matt. :-)
p.s.
..Yeah don't go there,

I let you get to me

yeah yeah.

I'm really struggling with this album atm, when it comes to Deftones I'm a realist when I say things may change in terms of my take and appreciation of the album as a whole .I will say I have never encountered a more formulaic album. The melodic chorus, back in the day amazing, is just way to repeated on this album imo, as is the note structure.Maybe Chi was that random element that changed things up.....I'm not sure. Then again my expectations for any album they release is high.As such my subjective opinions and expectations are no doubt partly to blame, especially when they change over time.

I still love the album, it's better than 99% of the crap released now days but I'm talking about my favorite band since 1993-1994.As in no other band could even compare.I  put them on a pedestal, deservedly as far as I'm concerned, and yet still I'm not sure on this album. My opinion may  change in the next few weeks.

I have to add though Franks work on this album is amazing.

I thought that aswell but it's less formulaic than Diamond Eyes so i'm guessing the next one will be even less formulaic I think it might have to do with them just getting used to Sergio and the new work ethic ,I will say they sound more settled and more confident in this album Sergio especially he's much more noticeable now, in Diamond Eyes he tended to follow Stephen alot now he sounds like he's sort of stepped out on his own and embraced the role.Frank yet again has done an awesome job he always makes songs more atmospheric without taking over I love how he if he feels the track doesn't need it he won't touch it.

I think the Sergio point could be valid dude. When I actually put that in relevance it makes more sense in terms my personal appreciation of the album.

My biggest point of contention atm is not being surprised. There's no Fireal, ,Mascara, Elite, When Girls Telephone Boys, etc ,etc surprises on this album.I can't recall that ever happening, for me personally, when hearing a Deftones album for the first few times. They have ALWAYS thrown something at me I never saw coming.Melodically and structurally the album is brilliant as I expect any Tones album to be but it's very samey with subtle riff differences on this album for me so far.The repetition of melodic chorus, and similarity of choruses on the album is highly surprising.

Then again I could be here raving this is the best album they ever made in a few weeks.Good music is slowly digested and I'm only talking the first few bites when it comes to this album.

I'm overly-critiquing an amazing album....but I guess that's what fans do.

I was pretty surprised by What Happened To You? with it's reggae sort of sound but I missed having one those epic long moody songs like Pink Maggit

fireflyry

Reminded me of Wax and Wane, if not slightly more upbeat and melodic.

After more than a month of listening to the album, I think I can make a top 10.

01.Poltergeist (funny how at first I thought this song was going to be the one I like the least)
02.Goon Squad
03.Tempest
04.Rosemary
05.Gauze
06.What Happened To You?
07.Swerve City
08.Leathers
09.Graphic Nature
10.Romantic Dreams (the instrumental is beast, I'm just not fond of its lyrics)
11.Entombed

I loved this album from the get-go, and if anything it has managed to grow on me.

I posted this at 3am on my Facebook profile: "Instead of sleeping in preparation for an 8am final, I will be commemorating a month since the release of Deftones' Koi No Yokan by running naked through the streets of Raleigh, and then probably listening to the album. Where's my eggnog? [followed by youtube link to the entire album]"

I love the outro on Gauze at the minute.

YES! your last few posts have said what I've been feeling.  Imagine WHTY with electronic drums. It's Crosses.

And yes. I was not Surpised with this album... there werent any moments where I've been like "coool!!" or "wow!"
WHTY was the only one to initially get to me and since then Rosemary has been stuck in my head.

Are there going to be any remixes for this album? i hope some extras come out

Right? I have been hoping for some remixes of the new stuff too, since the other covers for this cd never got recorded.

iateyourmom

Maybe remixes and an acoustic version for a cd single, i could see that happening if we dont get any B-side songs

bewareofrats

Romantic Dreams is probably the most grabbing song on here for me, right now anyway.
