I've been listening to Koi No Yokan for a week now with headphones. Walking around. It's nice and cold out. I'm going to do a stream of thought kind of thing...

Swerve City:
This track has great soaring vocals, pretty straight-forward stuff. I love how bouncy it is and would love to be in the pit and just jump around like it was 1999. That bass is so groovy. Short and concise...get it out of the way :-)

Romantic Dreams:
One of my favorite tracks off this album. As usual, Abe shines. Another soaring chorus, but this time, I love it. I love the anxiety in Chino's voice during the verse. Song makes me feel like I am in a dream.

Leathers:
I love this intro. I don't get how some people don't like it. I love what frank is doing..feels like it is still part of Romantic Dreams. The song, for me, starts when the guitars rip my face off. At first, I didn't like this song. I love this chorus. I love the lyrical content. Great track. I get the SNW vibe from this one. And that fucking scream is what we all love about Deftones. That anger! Pain! Something!

Poltergeist:
I fucking love those claps and Frank's effects. Feels like something sinister is about to go inside your mind. I totally get an ATF vibe from this track. Super up-tempo. The part where he says "I love you to death" or whatever it is he says...everything about this part sounds ATF to me. The washing guitar sound, Chino's melody...Like everyone says...a scream here or there would have brought this song over the edge. The last part of the song...I hear something rising, like it's getting thicker. Might be Frank doing something but I love it!

Entombed:
I love what Chino is playing here in the background. This song reminds me of Silent Hill if the vocals were to be taken out. The drum samples, the airiness of the guitar. I like that during the chorus, Chino doesn't do a falsetto...he's singing. I like how his vocals are about to break down. I love the keyboard part in the bridge to the end of the song...and I hear some sound like something exploded in the sky. I love this outro.

Graphic Nature:
Fucking dark song. White Pony b-side? I like the slight guitar sliding I hear in this song. My favorite part of this song when he its "wOoooo" and then delay. I know he does a lot of "wooos" in this song, but this one is special. Makes the song sound weird. The last part where he goes, "tell me how you do it" is fucking killer...and then Abe's master drumming!!#@#$#@$ I love the outro on this one as well...song winds down...arrive back to earth for a little bit...

Tempest:
This song is rockin! The imagery is amazing.. "Id like to be taken, apart from the inside.." love that line. I love the interplay between Stef and Chino during this song. Frank's effects/keys are amazing as per usual. The part after the song makes me bob head. Love this part. Last chorus gets walls of noise...love this...Abe killing it in the end! My favorite drummer!

Gauze:
Stef's guitar is my favorite part of this song. How can people say this album isn't heavy? It's way more dark, brooding, and songs actually feel heavy compared to DE. Sorry off topic...I love that bridge after the 2nd chorus...whatever Frank is doing is rad. Gauze may not be my favorite, but its getting there. I fucking love this outro...gets me ready for a masterpiece...

Rosemary:
I love how Franks effects ebb-and-flow while getting louder...Then Sergios bass if perfect. Chino starts and reminds me of S/T. Stef just launched me into space! haha  I think this might be the sludgiest he's ever sounded yet, this song is so tender and beautiful...That fucking bridge. "Stay with me....come sail with me..." IT's what I love about Deftones. Then he soars with "ExploooooooooodeeeeEEee" I love how his voice sounds at the end of that word. Not perfect, I love that....Then the bridge comes again and washes of beauty, sensuality, space, dreams..I can't put into words how this part makes me feel. When I kind of did, but yeah you get. Here we go again with an outro that I love...Polar opposite of what Stef was playing. It's cool how Chino is playing what he was singing...It's the little things like this that make me love this band...

Goon Squad:
Totally hear the smashing pumpkins comparison. There is some weird sound that Frank is doing in the background of the intro. Like something is whirling up and then the song kicks in! I love that delayed "wWAH" sounds like some weird shit they would've done during ATF. Chorus is groovy.. I love that "designed special for you..." part..then noise....Love this part. Sound like Chino is screaming sound weird shit in the back...Aliens??? I wish Chino wasn't playing guitar in these songs...I want him to be in the crowds screaming his lungs out. Great track.

What Happened to You:
Abe's beat...so sick. Totally hip hop with that dub bass...Chino's vocals remind me of their Japan cover. I kind of have a feeling Stef is doing keys here something else different. I love the bass in this song....."The sky is falling down...this night BELONGS TO YOU" damn....gets to me. I have no idea how music can do that. I don't know what it's pulling from the back of my mind but it brings me to tears. I love the ending. It's just noisey...vocals are in the back with guitars taking over and then bam...song is over. I love this track. Like I read in some review...it has this positive feeling that the rest of the album doesn't have. A promise of hope, a promise of love.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I can see why some people don't like certain things, but I am not hearing these things. Deftones sound so tight here. I hear a lot of everything they have ever played up to now...I love this album. One more track and it would be more awesome! At first listen I didn't love it. Not even the second...but after listening to it with good headphones, I could hear everything that was going on.

I look at their albums like this:
OLD             NEW
Adrenaline :: SNW
ATF :: DE
WP :: KNY

with S/T being a a bridge between sounds. There was a review that said DE was the start of their new sound, but I think it goes back to SNW with the references to space, Chino playing more guitar...

though i don't agree with all your points, nicely written, if i read this review before i heard the album i would be stoked as shit

anyway, "Swerve City", reminds me of the twilight zone episode called "spur of the moment" where this young girl on a white horse gets chased by an older evil lookin lady on a black horse (screamin at her. the young girl is horrifed thinking she's about to be murdered. after a long chase she gets away) turns out the older evil looking lady was actually the same person, just her older self, & she was chasing her to try & warn her not to ruin her life, but she can never catch her, & she only realises who was chasing her when she was younger once she becomes that older miserable lady. that's swerve city to me. i'm a twilight zone freak,  lol

dammit man....

so fucking awesome you saw that in that song !

I remember seeing that episode a few years ago ( they show like a Twilight Zone marathon on some channel during christmas or new years and that shit bugged me out ..along with some other episodes) and when I heard Swerve I thought of it briefly ..

youre awesome for putting that together
thank you sir, i'm glad you see it too

I am loving the album more and more with each listen. I know it will be regualary played record by me, unlike DE.

I think the general praise for it is a little exaggerated. Saying it's the best thing Deftones have done is, for me, a hyperbole. Calm down, peeps.

Yes. Thank you.

There is no such thing as "the best thing Deftones have done"

Yes. Thank you.

For some people its the best record, for others its the worst record and some are somewhere in the middle. Nobody can say that a personal taste in music is exaggerated. Its about what your guts say and thats a very subjective feeling.

That is a good point. And for me, the weakest thing about this album is the lyrics. They're not bad, but they dont have the same effect as WP had, that kinda creativity and story-telling kinda feel. But then, to me personally, none of their albums have had the same lyrical style, so I didnt expect a revert back to Knife Prty-esque lyrics, so it's not a big deal or a surprise, just the only thing I can consider the weakest aspect of the album, for me personally. Still loving it, just wish they'd play more of the new songs live.

@vesanic:

Yeah I know what you mean. I do really enjoy the more positive vibe on kny right now. but at the same time, I still like selftitled the most of all albums especially because its dark, sad and sick and by no means positive.

Generally I think its not about "this record beats that record", its about what people feel and I prefer saying "I dont feel that record/this song" instead of "this is complete shit" or "this is the best theyve ever done". I love people talking bout their feelings when talking about deftones, cause to me thats what makes them so special and different from other bands, they touch people with so many different emotions.

Its not a damn album championship.

We are all here, fighting about which album is the best, which album is the worst.
The truth is, there is no truth.
Even when we are trying to be really objective, everything is only a question of opinion.

What really matters it's the evolution of their music. For someone, KNY is their best album, for some it's Adrenaline.
Each of us will always think to know which album is the best one but we are wrong.

For instance, I will never understand people who think that KNY or DE is the best album of the band.
But it's MY opinion. Maybe KNY IS a masterpiece.

For me, masterpieces are ATF, WP and ST.
Well, I suppose that's only my opinion even if a part is about objectivity.
It's about my own tastes.

....... well, ok, MEIN is REALLY a shit. It's a fact.

I wouldn't say that it was shit, if Serj wasn't on the track it might be better. I'm finding it hard to get into KNY, it's kinda got the same feelings I had for S/T.

Is there any data how are the sales so far ? I'd reckon they are massive. For this kind of music, that is.

According to Blabbermouth it is expected to sell between 60,000 and 65,000 in the US in the first week It probably won't chart in the UK until tomorrow when the listings are updated.

Haven't really shared my thoughts on this yet.

I like it. Really like it.

Obligatory album rankings:

S/T
Diamond Eyes (haters gonna hate)
White Pony
Koi No Yokan / Saturday Night Wrist
Around the Fur
Adrenaline

i agree i love the album, the tracks have grown a great bit on me.

but my initial impression hasn't change...

DE > KNY

it is just a better allrounder...i remember back in '10 saying, "damn, this is album is really solid, definitly the most cohesive since WP (even though it was too midtempo oriented for my taste)". So the claim of the "true successor" was sold in my book.

i aint buying the same claim for KNY.

the cohesiveness ranking (wich doesnt mean they are my favorites):

ATF
A
WP
DE
KNY
ST
SNW

epistaxis

Since I picked up the album it has been on repeat ever since.
Heck, I even DREAM about it: in my dream I was in a supermarket and I suddenly heard 'Gauze'.

Today I decided to put it aside for the time being, I don't want to wear it out already(like I already have with leathers and tempest even though I didn't listen to them that much: I disliked leathers at first listen).

So far I like it heaps better than DE(I'm never in the mood to put that one on) but I gravitate more towards their darker material.

My 2 cents...

Swerve City - Fun at first, now I'm a bit bored by it.  Would've been fine if this appeared on their 1st or 2nd album but kind of embarrassing when it makes the cut on #7.

Romantic Dreams - Kinda like it but should've loved it.  The time sig changes are a nice try but never seem organic, like they did it just to sound progressive & "hey everyone. our sound is evolving"

Leathers - interesting intro, nice thick riffs, great lyrics but like a lot of deftones songs over the past decade, turns into repetitive filler.  Instead of just trying to make a potential radio hit they could have stepped back & really thought about where the song could've went.  Instead, it ends up going nowhere.  After the first verse/chorus, you no longer need to keep listeneing 'cause you've already heard the whole song.  Probably the weakest track overall imo

Poltergeist - Aside from the fact that i liked the original title Roller Derby 100000x more, track 4 isnt bad but again once i listened all the way thru i knew the next time i listened i would only be listening to a certain point before skipping to something else.  The hand claps actually kinda worked for me i guess because they shouldn't have in a song this heavy.  Sergio's low end is nice & sinister but again, havent they made this type of short & sweet uptempo aggressive choppy song before (Rickets, Street Carp, Rapture, CMND?CTRL even Melanie)  What's the point?  They can do this shit in their sleep  Is it just an excuse to get another heavy track on the album?  Could've been better but instead ends up kinda lame

Entombed - Nice song.  I actually prefer more of their melodic stuff but nothing surprising here.  This song didnt need to be 5 minutes  Very monochromatic all the way thru.  Liked the lyrics, Chino's voice didnt sound strained for once & I like the electronic tinge in the drum beats but it makes its point early then has nothing new to say (Sensing a patern here?)  KNY's Sextape.  Decent song but where's the risk?  Do all their albums have to have that one or two ballad-y type team sleep song?

Graphic Nature - not much to say except this gets my vote as most boring song on KNY & one of the most uninteresting songs they've ever done.  Not bad so much as its just kinda...there.  Nothing memorable.  Lyrics are kinda cool but idk...listened once & can safely say it wont be getting a second

Tempest - one of the best songs they've ever written...no complaints except that sadly, more songs werent like this one

Gauze - Glasssjaw called they want their song back.  Liked the syncopation just before the chorus & Frank's effects are killer but heavy for the sake of beong heavy  No imagination, no exploration  Very disappointing

Rosemary - see Tempest...although we didnt need the outro because it said to me "we need to make this song longer so people will look at the track length & think something epic is going on when really we're just adding unnecessary noise at the ends of songs"  Come to think of it, you could say the same for entombed, graphic nature, gauze & goon squad...why extend a song longer than it needs to be if you're not gonna use that time wisely.  I guess the band  heard some fans complaining that DE was too short & decided the remedy would be to make their next album hella long for the hell of it instead of making an honest effort to be exciting & fresh

Goon Squad - awesome intro followed by 4 minutes of ridiculous "WHOOS" in the chorus, a riff that may as well have been playing on a loop, and another song i would've expected from ATF era deftones  This song went on forever & just left me numb but not in a good way.  Besides the intro, the only other thing i did enjoy was the "designed for you by me" part but overall nothing special

WHTY? - Hate this song as a closer for the sole reason that we've all come to expect songs like this as a closer.  However, the only reason it works is because it's the closer so figure that one out.  Placed anywhere else on the album & I'd feel the same way for it as i do Entombed or sextape.  That being said WHTY is actually a really cool song on its own.  Simple yes but Chino's vocals & lyrics really hit me.  Anything short of the haunting qualities that Chino provides & I'd be shitting on this track but he kinda saved some greatness for last but its too late nonetheless

if there's one thing KNY accomplished it made me appreciate White Pony even more.  HUUUUUUGE disappointment.  For all the talk that this band wants to push the envelope & be more daring & experimental, they seemed to have forgotten that it needs to happen naturally.  Trying to be different is beneath a band that made its name by being different by simply existing

I suppose it's just the IMMEDIATE praise that I don't understand. For me, it takes a little while to really appreciate an album. There have been a lot of times when I love an album upon first listen, I'm all about it, but then tire of it soon after. The albums I consider all-time favourites are ones that I've continued to love for years. So for me, to say KNY is 'the best' just a couple days after its release is crazy. But hey, that's just me.

IN WAVES

This album is so much better when you're blasting it on a decent system. I just got the physical CD last night, and I'm listening to it today. I thought it was great before, but now it's much better. :^D

Going back to ranking the albums, this one probably isn't near the top. That doesn't mean it's a bad album, it's just that the stuff that came before it was that d@mn good! I love Koi No Yokan. I'll be blasting this and the other CD's until the next album (and Eros hopefully) come out.

What kind of deftones fan doesnt give a song a second chance, thats one of the better songs on the album.
