I totally understand why you would disagree that adrenaline isn't their best album, but I don't understand you finding it laughable. Some people don't judge albums by vocal melody.  When deftones first came out, no one flocked to them because of insane vocal melody. It was raw, dirty, emotional and different. Many claim it sounded like every other numetal band at the time, but I beg to differ.

Anyways, there's tons of reasons to judge that cd, but I don't think melody is a strong criteria.

It IS laughable to me, when compared to every other one of their albums. That includes "B-sides and Rarities". Melody is just one of the aspects I quoted as lacking on that record. The bland, annoying buzzsaw guitar tone that dominates the album is another. Abe's drumming was fully formed by that record, but that alone can't save the album from sounding monotonous and nu-metal by numbers.

Sorry, man. I'm sure at the time it was an interesting take on the genre, but it's incredibly dated today and completely eclipsed by everything else they've done.

Well, I love the new record. Only weak songs IMO are the last 2. Love everything else, it's a grower, on about my 18th or 19th listen.

Does anyone know what happened to the obligatory cover versions? Is there anything planned?

I think you're the first person I've seen that thinks Goon Squad is weak.
Just out of curiosity, what do you not like about it?

I respect your opinion to dislike Adrenaline, but you lost me with the nu-metal by the numbers bit.  I challenge you to name 3 nu-metal bands that came out during that time that you feel deftones had a strong resemblance to.  Also, feel free to continue this in the Bullshit thread where it belongs.

Something is wrong with you.

this was the first record, the sound is just dirty but even with that it's still one of the best, the guitar, the sing, the rythm.

Deftones have never been "nu metal" for me and Adrenaline was little more than a "passable debut", after 17 years it continues to make me crazy.

All of this applies to you, as an individual. So how does any of that make something wrong with me?

Korn, Glassjaw and Orange 9mm all come readily to mind.

You can argue that Orange 9mm weren't "nu-metal", but they had a definite influence on Deftones' sound during that period.

Shit, I meant to post that in the Deftones BS thread. Sorry about that.

Let's just put the issue to bed. I'll still take Adrenaline over any other nu-metal album ever. And every other Deftones album over Adrenaline. Nuff said.

I listened to Adrenaline the other day for the first time in years, No melody whatsoever in Chino's vocals.

Dude, that is just wrong.
Yeap it may be less obvious than on the other albums but it's definitely there just listen to Bored

The "Geeeeet Boooooooooooooooored!" chorus that hits a falsetto after the second verse? Come on.
You are just being a dick now a melody doesn't have to be over a huge range in can just be slight changes he doesn't sing flatly the whole song

I prefer the particular creative period of SNW to their other albums.  I don't care what anyone says, it is their most atmospheric and spacey album and that includes WP and KNY.  Sounds way spacier than WP.

This.

If nothing else, I find SNW to be their most atmospheric, as well as their darkest. Definitely the weirdest of all their albums. It took me years to get my head around it and appreciate it as the album it is and should be heard as. It doesn't sound like any of their other albums or any other album, period.

My only wish is that they'd have included Finger of Death in the tracklisting.

I'm not being a dick. I just didn't agree with what that other guy said about the song's melody.

I wish there was a 10+ second long eagle scream on here.  It would be the first time on record and would be awesome.

In all serious though, the lack of screams is one of the reasons that hold  KNY back from being a perfect album for me.
What I enjoy most is a mixture of vocal styles.  Im not looking for all screams, nor am I looking for all melodic singing.  The combination of singing/screaming/whispering/whatever-the-fuck-else-he-does is what got me hooked all these years and is what I continue to look for.

Im all for progression, changing of styles, keeping things fresh, but I really wanted to hear chino let a few nasty screams rip.
Back when Leathers was the only song available, if I knew that was going to have the meanest scream on the album I would have been a bit concerned.  I would have settled for just a few on poltergeist.  I feel parts of that song were completely neutered.

It doesnt keep me from loving the album and playing it non stop. Just being picky.

I hear ya and agree but I think it's something I can get used to knowing there's still plenty aggression (musically) and there's enough screams and shouts and high energy vocals spread throughout.  I think Poltergeist has quite a bit of aggression on Chino's part even if it's not Hexagram-like screams.  It's also faster paced and much higher energy than songs like that so it's a trade-off.

Yeah SNW has some of my favourite songs on it the only reason it isn't my favourite album is because it lacked consistency

luisch

Question: The right melody can be just as impactful as the loudest scream.

Chino: When you're younger, you have a lot more aggression. Some of the songs on our first record I wrote when I was 16 years old. I don't sound like a pissed-off kid anymore. As you get older you try to communicate in different ways. So, obviously, with the new record we definitely tried to expand on that idea. When you hear the first five seconds to a song and you've pretty much heard the whole song, that's kind of a bummer. With the way that we're making music now, the songs travel. I was thinking about this a few days ago — I'm 39 years old and in a little over ten years I'm going to be 50 — I was thinking, "Ah! 50 years old?" I can't imagine jumping around and screaming my head off at that age. I highly doubt that's going to be happening. But in a way, I feel like our music is maturing. I could imagine playing the songs on this record in ten years.

It's not that lacking in consistency.  Pink Cellphone is the only bad song on it, Mein is weak and that's about it.

The people shitting on Adrenaline are probably people who are now too old and mellow to appreciate it....Same as the Chili Peppers fans who kiss their ass or their "mature" music they make nowadays and are stupid enough to shit on their early albums

That's like saying Deftones purists who don't like their last three albums are still angry about stuff that happened to them in high school when Adrenaline and ATF were their soundtracks, and can't chill out and evolve with the band's sound. It's all personal preference. Just because I've grown up and moved on from Adrenumetal doesn't make me any less of a lifelong Deftones fan.
