Nah. lets not get carried away now they haven't kicked ass since the S/T

i like SNW a lot and DE is good too but KNY is overall pretty terrible the lyrics seem like they're all the same.

Hey man i like emotional music and i aint findin it here. It sucks cause these guys were my favorite band. But it's like you know you have fallen off a band when you can't feel good about saying they're your favorite band anymore because of their new record, it's like you take them down a notch to just something you 'enjoy'.
I had the same feelings like you, but I started to like the album actually. I am also disappointed with the lyrics and some of the vocals, but the music is top-notch.
There is atmosphere and emotions in this album, it's just not what you'd expect from Deftones, maybe that's why you don't find it. I know, it's a little surprising to hear the lyrics "I promise to watch and raise your babies" from the band which made Feiticeira and Digital Bath, but I guess they are feeling positive, that's why they are making positive music now. It's only good that they are not trying to sound in a certain way but rather are doing the music they are feeling to do.
So, my initial reaction to the album was very negative, but I looked at it in a different way and started to like it. I am definitely going to play it much more then DE.

For me the ballads on Diamond Eyes have more emotion than any song on KNY.

Maybe it's a positive emotion on the album but i don't relate as i'm a pretty moody bastard and this album seems stuck in one mood.

Like the one reviewer said, the contrast is gone and it seems like a middle of the road album, which is disappointing because it's Deftones.

I'm sure some of the newer fans disagree with me and all that, which is fine but I don't think saying shit like 'why are you on this site if you don't like the album'' or ''leave'' is the right reaction to a fans bitter disappointment. I mean it won't change my mind and it's not like i'm saying 'no you can't enjoy this album'.

Eh whatever.

Am I the only one who wants to fucking see the booklet???
:(

It's a boring booklet. No pictures, just lyrics.

Again? they pulled that shit with Diamond Eyes (worst booklet design ever), has Frank Maddocks retired? Downloaded album on i-tunes, pretty average.

its not all 'new fans' that love the record. Im a fan since ATF and I love it! Just saying that because the last couple of days Ive seen you post a lot about two camps: the old and new fans.

True. Its all about personal taste and for me personally it also has always been a matter of the state I was in when a deftones record came out. For example,  I could never dig SNW at all, because I was breaking up with with my girl during that year and it was just a bad time in which didnt really enjoy anything at all. Maybe another aggressive album like selftitled would be more the kind of sound I needed and expected from them in that time. But looking back now, I think it has some really interesting and cool parts and songs in it and I listen to the whole record with different ears.
I literally got older with the band being a fan since 1995 and I really like how they evolved as musicians and shaped their unique band-sound over the years, even though sometimes (as mentioned above) our stages of development didnt go exactly parallel all the time. So its not about being a new or old deftones fan, its about them being the soundtrack of my life, just sometimes theyre a few months or years ahead (or behind) but me and them always catch up at a later point in life.

Right now, for me, KNY is the most perfect record they could have written.

I've been blasting the 'tones to everyone I could since 1995. ATF was my previous favorite Deftones album, but KNY is utterly incredible.

i've been a fan since late 1995, & i love KNY & DE. love all their albums, & no i'm not a damn sheep either, just truly dig what they do. diehard fan for sure. i couldn't imagine anyone thinking a deftones song is one of the worst songs they ever heard, that baffles me, with true dog shit like nickelback, trapt, creed, disturbed, papa roach, etc out there.

anyway, "Swerve City", reminds me of the twilight zone episode called "spur of the moment" where this young girl on a white horse gets chased by an older evil lookin lady on a black horse (screamin at her. the young girl is horrifed thinking she's about to be murdered. after a long chase she gets away) turns out the older evil looking lady was actually the same person, just her older self, & she was chasing her to try & warn her not to ruin her life, but she can never catch her, & she only realises who was chasing her when she was younger once she becomes that older miserable lady. that's swerve city to me. i'm a twilight zone freak,  lol

To me though it just sucks I can't shake the feeling that they've had a very consistently enjoyable album cycle throughout their career and this is a kind of a step back and a hiccup for them. Chino said 'I never want to make another deftones record just to make one' but it seems like that's what they've done here.

For me though I only have made music in my life when i was fucked up or felt like i needed to. So I can't see why you'd make a record if you were just having a good time or whatever. That's just me though

Starz

The thing I can't get over is how awful some of the lyrics are. "I'll watch and raise your babies." Eurgh

I think alot of people who don't like it know will come back to it later when they've changed personally and will see why people like ,music especially deftones stuff has so much to do with your state of mind.

Maybe you should try some my chemical romance or dashboard confessional.

Music shouldn't be restricted to one emotion ,i bet one day when you are more content and happy this album will make sense

whiskeyandwine

Anybody a little disappointed with the mastering?  Seems to be pretty compressed and lacking dynamic range; an unfortunate victim of the loudness wars.  There is an alternative master available online via HD TRACKS that is 24bit/96khz WEB that is a completely different master.  Anybody else have this experience of hear the alternative master... Supposed to sound superior all around

Dude I've been following this band since they started and I honestly think you have a stick up your ass right now. I'll turn forty next year and just like the band I've grown up since Adrenaline (my fav) but that doesn't mean we've lost our "edge". Seriously listen to the way you are describing the album "hiccup"?! Me personally I could care less about how anyone feels because that's your damn right but you are sounding very sour. I could understand backlash like this from fans if this album were to drop after Adrenaline but it's twenty years later and you are expecting them to sound like they did when they were twenty. Your expectations are unrealistic that's all.

Take it for what it is, an album made by a bunch of guys who's catalog you already respect. No need for it to be Earth shattering or anything. To me it's probably the most concise and thought out album they have ever made. Does that mean I like it more than Adrenaline?! hell no! But I love it for what it is and at my age I am just thankful that one of my favorite bands is still making quality music that I can still go skate to. Peace.

BTW is it cool to do an album review in this thread?

Yeah I expected as much. I just don't like it, like I said my opinion. It aint the first time i've been told I got a stick up my ass. haha.

But yeah a fellow skater that's cool, you can post reviews here I guess but  I think there's already a thread for that I need to skate again but I'm broke and someone stole my boards both of them!

eh MCR are alright, Dashboard are cool though. I'd rather listen to the used than MCR but that last used album sucked ass.  by the way if that was supposed to be some sort of insult then you failed just sayin, if it wasn't then that's cool.
