don't forget on drugs

That too.

I'm a huge Mars Volta fan and there's been similar criticisms since they sobered up post-Frances The Mute, but more in the 'they aren't weird or complex enough anymore' and 'remake Deloused' veins.

Apparently heavy drug use has been beneficial all along!

sorry for being off topic, but do you know why they didn't out the song frances the mute on that record, it's incredible

I have no idea. FTM is one of their best tracks. Don't know if you have the cd but the lyrics for it are printed underneath the disc tray. I don't know if it was meant to go on there or they just left the lyrics in as some kind of cryptic thing to link up with the concept. One of the best b-sides ever in my opinion. The riff towards the end is absolutely INSANE.

yeah i have the cd, bought it on sale long after i got "tired" of it though so i didn't check it out properly. will do once i get home :) agree it is one of the best b-sides ever

I have heard some crap about it simply not being on there because there wasn't enough space on the disc. But, really, if that was the reason they could've just cut some of the "atmospheric noise" out and fitted it on there quite comfortably. Clearly some more thought out reason - I guess to just give the track some cult status maybe. It's a shame, as I said I LOVE that album but if they'd cut some of the fat off and put FTM on there, it would probably be my favourite album by any band hands down.

I'm SERIOUSLY going to stop talking about The Mars Volta now.

Back on topic: Romantic Dreams is quickly climbing my fav. track list off KNY

That too. I'd rather they made crappy music but were happy and healthy than make awesome music but all be depressed and fucked up. I dont really put their creativity down to drug use, I think it just took the lyrics in a different direction and the themes, but even so, I always find it weird wen ppl say they wish ____ was back on drugs for the sake of music. And since you mentioned The Mars Volta, same with them too. They've lost a few ppl frm heavy drug use but as long as they make another Deloused In The Comatorium, it's all good? Eh, seems very selfish.

Couldn't agree more with this. Creativity comes from people, not substances. All drugs can ever do, apart from fuck up their lives, is channel that creativity in a certain way. But great artists find other ways of doing that.

Moz

So I think I listened to it close to 30 times now in the weekend. Also with mates, before going out. And on various other moments of the day.

I keep loving this record more and more. Its so diverse, 'whole', such a unique sound. I love this new Deftones, sorry. Im not a big metalhead for years now and it seems the Tones are growing up with me.

Whereas the harder songs like Goon Squad and Poltergeist were my favorites in the beginning, now songs like Entombed and What Happened to You have become my favorite.

TheyCallMeP

After listening to the album a few times, I'd have to say Poltergeist, Rosemary, and Romantic Dreams are my favorites followed by Entombed then Goon Squad (but mainly bc of how it segues with the end of Rosemary). KNY is completely different then what I had imagined but still an excellent album. I think it came up a few pages back but if I had to compare it to any of their other records it would be Saturday Night Wrist, in my opinion. I feel like Swerve City was overhyped by every review and feels unfinished to me. I just consider it an intro track really. Other than that I have no complaints. Tempest still sounds as monstrous as ever to me and will probably evolve into one of my favorites on the disc.

Gauze opening riff sounds something out of a korn album. I like it though.

Crenshaw's, riff reminds me of that dissonant riff in Gauze. Just a bit more drug out and down tempo.

goon squad reminds me Smashing Pumpkins.

Here we go:

This album really isn't obvious on the vocal front, is it?  I've listened to it three times now and the second time was the least satisfying.  Third time I went for a walk and it did much more for me.  I see great potential in this album but there's no doubt I'm going to need some time with this one.  It's not an instant hit for me.  After 3 listens there seems to not be much that really grabs me vocally.  It's just that Chino's singing style has really changed.  It started on Diamond Eyes but it's definitely more apparent here.  It's like he's trying to sing more perfectly and he's losing emotional power and uniqueness.  Right now his vocals/singing sounds much more interesting to me on the other records, especially SNW and back.  It's the only thing I was quite concerned about on this record but I just have to get used to this new vocal style.  Also, there's too much high singing on the record, he needs to tone it back a bit. It has more impact if it's not all over the record.  It's sad that the main thing that stood out to me in Deftones is losing its power and uniqueness but this record is its own thing and I hope I can start to appreciate it as such.

I can see why some people are saying this sounds like their most commercial album but I think it's mainly the first half.  The last half has quite a bit darker of a tone.  Right now my favourite songs are probably Leathers, Tempest, Rosemary and maybe Romantic Dreams.  There really isn't a bad song at all though.  I am glad there's no electronic or rap-esque track.  Entombed is really nice but laid back and subtle.  It reminds me of Beauty School but isn't nearly as powerful.  I like Swerve City quite a bit overall but the riff is kind of generic/non Deftones sounding.  This album has energy all over the place and more tempo changes which I really like.  Goon Squad being near the end is great.  I think this is more musically aggressive overall than DE.  I think the comparisons to DE and WP are apt.

AHHHHHH so many thoughts and so much to say but I don't want to write a novel.  I must add though, holy moly does the last half of Tempest remind me of Living Through Me by Pantera.  Doesn't anyone else hear this?  Is it intentional?

I pretty much agree with all of that. Rosemary and leathers are really the only songs from the album I'm listening to on a daily basis because they're the only songs on this record that give me somewhat of a dose of the deftones I love. Entombed, poltergeist, and tempest are cool but I don't really give a fuck for them. Maybe this shit will grow on me, diamond eyes has to an extent. We shall see.....

Agreed. Tempest through to the end of Goon Squad especially. Those four songs in a row are the album highlight for me.

And like some others here, I too am disappointed by WHTY? but what can you do. Maybe my appreciation will grow with time.

xToxin

The thing is, people who were depressed and angry at the world and pissed off found deftones, and some of those people are still like that, so the new stuff alienates them. That's my problem with it, but i understand its just another stage of their career. Doesn't mean i have to like it, i can't like it if i can't relate.

Certain people look for deftones for certain things, and those things are gone for me. I guess people who vibe with the record are pretty chilled out and such. I don't know, i found so much emotion in deftones when I first discovered the band. They've alienated me and several others with this new direction. Us fans have to be a bit disappointed, so I hope the new fans can at least respect us fans of the older material. Even if they don't like it.

bewareofrats

The last 2 listens Poltergeist has really grown on me.  Man, it is an intense high energy song.  I love Chino's high notes in the chorus of this song.
