I mentioned yesterday that my friend that writes for a magazine asked me to write his review for KOI NO YOKAN (and yes, I'll get the credit). Here's what I have so far. Let me know what you guy's think! Please give me some feedback.

Deftones  "Koi No Yokan"
Deftones return after the release of 2010's  Diamond Eyes with their seventh studio album, entitled Koi No Yokan. It's quite evident that this band has no intentions of stopping or looking back; only evolving and moving forward. It is the band's second album with fill-in bassist Sergio Vega. The album's Japanese title is unlike the sense of "love at first sight"; rather Koi No Yokan referrs to "the sense of meeting someone for the first time, and knowing that the two of you will fall in love eventually."

That being said, right out the gate Koi kicks off with the bouncy and energetic "Swerve City" as Chino croons "She breaks her horses, with distant voices.. that travel through the air!" This track is the best opener the band has presented us with since "Feiticeira" from White Pony.  In "Romantic Dreams" we hear the band experiment with unique song structure, deep layers, and odd-time signatures. Moving all throughout the album, the band presents us with tracks such as "Poltergeist", "Gauze", & "Goon Squad" which are all relentless, aggressive, and down right raw & dirty. And then songs such as "Entombed" & "Rosemary" are simply gorgeous, melodic, dark, and warm. These songs show the Deftones in a new light and that they are very versitile in their song writing.

Koi No Yokan is simply an evolution in their sound. Sonicaly this album is brilliant. Frank's synth work creeps through while Stephen's 8-string pounds away, and Chino's vocals sound better than ever before. It's hard to compare one Deftones album to another, they're all unique in their own way; yet they are still Deftones. Does that make sense? This is a band that has some how in their 24 year career managed to stay relatively away from the mainstream, but yet consistently crank out great solid albums and keep a massively dedicated fanbase.

Dare I say Koi No Yokan may be the band's most cohesive piece of work to date. It is lush, dark, beautiful, angry, melodic, and heavy in all of the right places. The entire album flows beautifully from one track to the next, never letting go; until it all comes full circle with  "What Happened to You?". A beautiful album closer, that really smooths out everything, like a peaceful shoreline. There's something on this album for everyone to enjoy. I feel that Koi No Yokan will pull you in, whether you're a new fan, old, or first time listener.

I know many here are going to have a field day with that one ;p

It's a really versatile rock record. I find it pretty strange that they're only starting to blatantly show their influences now though!

man this album is killer. i've only listened to it twice so far, but it's great

unexpected fun fact: KNY has the most songs that have screams in them than any deftones album since ATF. 7 songs have screams. romantic dreams, leathers, poltergeist, graphic nature, tempest, rosemary, & goon squad.

so kny 7, DE 6, SNW 5, ST 5, WP 6

geraavl08

Yall should listen to "Fist" right after KNY that song was ahead of its time!

Eh? You mean random screams? Because there's no Hexagram-style song on this album lol.

yea, i just mean screams at any point. not saying there's a lotion type song or engine no.9. just interesting that it has the most songs that has screams at any point in the songs since ATF. not saying it's the heaviest since then. just a fun fact

I wasnt doing that for the leak, I was expecting to come online and see everything had exploded with the news of the leak (which it did). See what you all did? You've destroyed your minds haha.

hahaha! yeah, I did for a minute.. I was afraid I would miss it. Which is what almost happened. I knew someone would put it up for just a minute before it got taken down.. but it ended up leaking all over the web later that evening.
