I think it's perfectly valid to say that KNY could be seen, by some, as a masterpiece in 5 years time. I guess in 5 years time we'll know lol

What annoys me is that people assume it can't be a masterpiece, mainly because it's new and doesn't have that mythic quality that albums like White Pony and the Self Titled seemed to have built up around themselves (not sayin' they don't deserve it, just sayin'). But really, if YOU think it's a masterpiece, then to you, it is, and perhaps always will be. The whole idea is pretty subjective, and Deftones in particular have a very multifaceted sound, so what makes a 'masterpiece' Deftones album is different for different people.

I'm not saying KNY is a masterpiece, I'm just saying that, personally, I think it has the potential to become one in the same way their earlier albums have.

This.

It's definitely a contender for their top 3 best albums.
But everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I agree with what everyone else says - It's hard to rank Deftones albums.
They rank by my mood for me rather than quality.

My list from AMAZING to GREAT

1. Around The Fur
2. White Pony
3. Koi No Yokan
4. Self Titled
5. Diamond Eyes
6. Saturday Night Wrist
7. Adrenaline

Yeah I'm the same. For me Around The Fur is probably their tightest, most consistent album musically, but it's not my favourite. I like an album because it has a particular vibe, more than thinking 'well, how many songs on this record are better than on the last record.'

anyone saying this album is their best album might be insane. lets get real here. its a decent album, every time one of your fav bands puts out an album, theres this major excitement and you think every song is the best ever, then 6 months to a year later, you re- evaluate. I doubt in 5 years people will regard KNY as a true masterpiece lol

I agree to an extent, but i am a huge Deftones fan and never could really get into Diamond Eyes, but KNY has already sucked me in... it's def one of their best albums.... KNY and WP for me are their best.

Definitely. They are an incredibly consistent band, but I really didn't think they could pull a record as good as KNY out at this stage. I actually really liked Diamond Eyes when it came out, but then I wasn't a huge fan of SNW so for me it was a return to form slightly. DE has nowhere near the depth of KNY though. So many textures and layers in these tracks!

Admittedly, on first listen KNY didn't blow me away... But after a few listens - wow, what an incredible record.

Ok I miss the lack of aggressive vocals but I think the whole depth , dynamic and pure emotion on this record is unique.

Having to had the pleasure to meet and share a beer with Mr Chi Cheng, What Happened To You brought a tear to my eye. This song delves into to true emotion and friendship - very special song - oneloveforchi

Yep, the diversity of this album is what is going to make it of of the bands best  IIMO

White Wrist

I could not resist and I heard the album ...

Honestly ... not much appreciated. In terms of sounds is deftones. The whole dynamic changes in tempo and feeling. But the way the Chino singing ... I did not like. Do not hit me, to be honest.

Chino sings equally on all songs in all choruses ... "Whoooo" with all the effects and echoes.
I think in terms of individual Steph is best of all. I am never disappointed with Steph in their albums.

It is the most commercial album deftones no doubt. Do not always want to hear the same album but ... I feel that something is missing.

Hi guys, first time poster but long time Deftones fan. Gotta say... this album is pretty fucking incredible IMO.  Good to see a lot of people seem to love it on here as well, even if there's some disagreement on the songs.

To throw in my two cents on some of the negative criticism people have been talking about - even though I think it's a great album, there are definitely parts where I thought they could be doing more... Like how people were talking about Abe's drumming a few pages back, how it seems a bit repetitive and there are parts where it could be doing more. I reckon this is also true about Frank and Chino's 2nd guitar playing as well. There are parts on this album, and Diamond Eyes where it feels as though they were going in a certain direction but didn't follow through, I reckon because of the speed at which they were both made.

Still though - I have no worries whatsoever about them losing it, this album felt fresh as hell and had so many great inventive moments, easily enough to make up for the occasional lapse. Steph's riffs are pretty standout in that respect. It cohered a lot better than Diamond Eyes as well, I thought, every track flowed into next. I didn't much like Leathers as a standalone track, but on this it felt right. Favourite tracks: All of them except Entombed and WHTY, which are alright but not in the same league as the rest. This is getting long and there's so many awesome things I want to spew out about this album but I won't. But I'll just say, I think to comparison to White Pony is justified. We'll see if it has staying power but I think this album is brilliant.

It's crazy how one can change his mind after a few listens.
I didn't like it the first time... too much weird high pitched singing from chino. But this one is a fucking grower, Sergio and Frank really do the job here, abe is awesome as always.... and Stef has some good fat riffs (god that verse on poltergeist).
Maybe Chino is the only weak link sometimes

I mentioned yesterday that my friend that writes for a magazine asked me to write his review for KOI NO YOKAN (and yes, I'll get the credit). Here's what I have so far. Let me know what you guy's think! Please give me some feedback.

Deftones  "Koi No Yokan"
Deftones return after the release of 2010's  Diamond Eyes with their seventh studio album, entitled Koi No Yokan. It's quite evident that this band has no intentions of stopping or looking back; only evolving and moving forward. It is the band's second album with fill-in bassist Sergio Vega. The album's Japanese title is unlike the sense of "love at first sight"; rather Koi No Yokan referrs to "the sense of meeting someone for the first time, and knowing that the two of you will fall in love eventually."

That being said, right out the gate Koi kicks off with the bouncy and energetic "Swerve City" as Chino croons "She breaks her horses, with distant voices.. that travel through the air!" This track is the best opener the band has presented us with since "Feiticeira" from White Pony.  In "Romantic Dreams" we hear the band experiment with unique song structure, deep layers, and odd-time signatures. Moving all throughout the album, the band presents us with tracks such as "Poltergeist", "Gauze", & "Goon Squad" which are all relentless, aggressive, and down right raw & dirty. And then songs such as "Entombed" & "Rosemary" are simply gorgeous, melodic, dark, and warm. These songs show the Deftones in a new light and that they are very versitile in their song writing.

Koi No Yokan is simply an evolution in their sound. Sonicaly this album is brilliant. Frank's synth work creeps through while Stephen's 8-string pounds away, and Chino's vocals sound better than ever before. It's hard to compare one Deftones album to another, they're all unique in their own way; yet they are still Deftones. Does that make sense? This is a band that has some how in their 24 year career managed to stay relatively away from the mainstream, but yet consistently crank out great solid albums and keep a massively dedicated fanbase.

Dare I say Koi No Yokan may be the band's most cohesive piece of work to date. It is lush, dark, beautiful, angry, melodic, and heavy in all of the right places. The entire album flows beautifully from one track to the next, never letting go; until it all comes full circle with  "What Happened to You?". A beautiful album closer, that really smooths out everything, like a peaceful shoreline. There's something on this album for everyone to enjoy. I feel that Koi No Yokan will pull you in, whether you're a new fan, old, or first time listener.

i never thought i'd make a list with ANYTHING but White Pony on top, but... lo!

Koi No Yokan
White Pony
Around the Fur
Saturday Night Wrist
Diamond Eyes
Deftones
Adrenaline

yes, Koi No Yokan is a fucking masterpiece.  Deftones have written their own 'Disintegration' or 'Violator', if you know what I mean.  this is their atmospheric magnum opus.
