Konami Code is kind of depressing.

Agreed. The darkest track on SNW imo; Rivière on the other hand never really depressed me, I think it carries a positive hopeful vibe - "She haunts the road, she waits for a new face..." It's focused on the future rather than on the past.

if you purely look at it lyrically; i never look at lyrics much. music puts context... perhaps "she waits for a new face" is ment with a tragic undertone, a hopeless longing.

love the song but I find it a bit depressing don't really see the optimism probably I remember hearing somewhere it was about an old Mexican ghost fable about a ghost that would haunt this road and torment the travellers hence the "she haunts the road ,she waits for a new face", aka a new victim lyric.

The music alone is pretty depressing too, as well as the vocal melody itself. The chords are very sweet and touching but seem to come out of a depression phase, like an epilogue to a very long and tough time with the girl you love. The very last part, how it slowly goes down, with Chino's whispers at the end and the couple of chords, is very simple but then very eloquent.

I'd say Mascara, the outro is especially sad sounding

SomeOf

WGTB
Mascara
Digital Bath
Fist
Battle-axe
Rivière
Xerces
Hexagram
Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event
Knife Prty
Pink Maggit ...

... almost everything in fact.

I see what you mean. But still, to me, it's probably the less sad ending to a Deftones record. I find Fist + Fireal, Mx and especially Pink Maggit and Moana more sad. Even This Place Is Death gets to me more.

Thats why overall with Hole In The Earth opening SNW and Rivière closing it, I wouldn't call it a sad album. It's more in-between.

My sadness stems from the personal experience I've attached to any of the songs, not the song itself.

Some people here are defining whether a specific song has a dreary or "sad" tone/feel to it, and while I may agree with them, I find that same song usually also has a "sexual" or "aggressive" tone to it, or even all of the above.

That's how good this fucking band is. You can basically attach any emotion to any song.
