I was thinking about this yesterday while my daily run on the park, but S/T was the situation, not SNW. Its been a long time since I dont listen to Deftones that much, even after DE released so yesterday I listened the whole ST while running. Amazing.

My conclusion is, you really start apreciating old albums when they get older, thats all. At first I kinda hated ST, and SNW, and DE, but thats what life is about, getting used to things, getting over them and then, loving them.

i'm always surprised to hear that deftones songs and their albums can grow so much - the structure in the songs are quite simple in deftones music, so for me, that first impression i get lasts forever. absolutley loved s/t at first listen and still do, was beyond depressed when I heard snw the first time and still can't get into it, can't believe what's to grow. those strong emotions just don't change for me they stick. i'm fascinated by reading this though. i can think of several bands that write music you have to get into by a lot of listening, not just deftones, they lay their cards on the table face up i think (musically not lyrically :)

SNW is their best album for me, or it ties this title with the S\T.
I just can't understand how people can say that it's weak and then say that WP is their best. But ok, everyone have their own mind.

SNW has eveything you want to hear from Deftones. Slower songs where Chino hits freaking high notes - Kimdracula(ok, mid-tempo), Cherry Waves, Xerces.
Then again, heavy stuff - Rats!Rats!Rats(no doubt, heaviest thing they have ever done), Combat(have you ever heard so many screams as well as one of the highest notes hit in discography from Chino in one song? I guess no.), Rapture also is really intense and energetic effort.

There are Beware and Hole In The Earth, most known tracks from record, and if you call HITE a radio-hit, then you are completely kidding me, I think.

As for me SNW is the most focused Deftones offering, as it brings to our ears a really various kinds of tunes, that are getting together being one of the most solid albums of decade.

Kinda poetic hahaha

i believe in love at first sight, that vision of life seems so boring. "everything is shit, but if you get used to it you can accept it with time.that's love" fuck that. i almost feels there's something wrong when you have to fight and work for it during a long time to like something

I think a real or OG Deftones fan is gonna have either Adrenaline or ATF at the top of their list... You can't beat perfect... The other albums are all great, but SNW is still the weakest, in my mind, the laziest; you can tell they didn't out their all into it.

D/E on the other hand, is a complete 180, I was very pleasantly surprised when I heard it, I thought it was gonna blow. You can tell they had their hearts in every aspect of the album all the way down to how Chino lost a billion pounds and got back into shape.
Sometimes I get this mad.

Chino lost a billion pounds and got back into shape.

when chino hated his life in the snw era, he used a lot of meth. but amphetamines like that diminishes the need to eat. so.. how could he be so fat back then?  ???

you're right,it seems he was using speed for about 2 years, approximately 2003,2004 and quit in 2005.
used speed during the making of snw, not after.(they began with snw in early 2004)

from an interview in 2006,speaking about speed:

''I never needed any rehabilitation or anything, I just decided never to do it again. It's been a year now and looking back at those  times none of them were happy'

seems he stopped with that kind of dope in 2005.

but still, this is a pic from 2004 (about a year doing speed)

fat back then too, hell, he was also fat in 2003. just doesn't look like the average speed user?

from_musings

ok.. it says 2004 from the youtube clip i used
Deftones - Minerva - Live Rock am Ring (2004)

but if anyone knows these kinds of things it's you

from_musings

but in this interview http://areena.yle.fi/video/1314787566513

chino says he can't remember anything from 2006 because of drugs. i'm guessing he's not talkbing about a little weed. maybe he was a junkie longer than he admitted in that other interview

ok.. and he DOES seem a little thinner in the cure clip 2004, if you compare him to 2003 and 2006, maybe the meth worked after all. not junkie-thin but still  :)  what's confusing though, is that he in 2006 says that he quit in 2005, and now he says he can't remember a thing from 2006 because of drugs. maybe he was doing drugs longer than he admitts or it's just that he can't remember years at all. but he did remember the cocaine year 2000 in the interview but not 2006, weird. in the yle-interview he speaks of 2006 like a meth year.

i would go as far as saying, what chino moreno says - is a lousy source

Quotewhen chino hated his life in the snw era, he used a lot of meth.

I don't believe I got that memo. Wow what a moron.

This kind of dirt makes me respect him as a person a little less. Next to running around on the mother of his kids...

Oh well, he's still Chino though, can't take away from his art.
Sometimes I get this mad.

I know a few people who take speed but they're also alcoholics and they're on the husky side. Was Chino still drinking loads then too?

SNW is wayyyy better than Diamond Eyes.

Love the 3 posts before mine!

i think if you took what's good off diamond eyes and mashed it in with what works on SNW you'd have a deftones release to rival some of their earlier stuff, as it stands they are both inferior to the past releases individually.

Not that i dislike either of them though, I think i've accepted that deftones have changed

Corleone

I'd probably say White pony and Around the fur are the best albums, followed by S/T, SNW, Adrenaline, Diamong Eyes.

There have been times where S/T was my favourite and Adrenaline was my favourite. Overall though, prob what I said above.

SNW is my 2nd fav album if I had to rate. The one that took the longest to get as well....  :) I fucking love this record, especially Combat and Rapture. Seems people don't generally like Rapture or SNW at all for some odd reason . To each his own. I just had Riviere played at my wedding 2 weeks ago, not fitting but very beautiful. My mom in her 50's even asked me who it was. Pretty cool shit, I thought. I even felt a little proud,  ;D
Pushing you back but still you ain't goooooooooone!!!!!!
