Are the Deftones influenced by Radiohead in any way?

I've heard people say from time to time that Radiohead was an influence to the Deftones but I can't find any quotes or info to confirm this. Anyone here have any links where any of the members mention liking Radiohead or listing them as an influence?

Deftones were influenced by The Cure, Bad Brains, The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Duran Duran, The Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, Helmet, Jawbox, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Hum, Kool Keith, Tool, Jane's Addiction, Fear Factory, Meshuggah and Weezer. All the songs they covered on B Sides and Rarities were from their 'favorite' artists.

But I've never heard Radiohead was an influence on them. Although Radiohead has also cited some of the above bands as influences on them as well.

There's an interview with chino from the ATF era where he mentions that he wishes he could sing like thom or something. It may be from the Lola da musica thing. Romain most certainly has it somewhere on his YouTube channel.

I have read many times that Chino was a big Radiohead fan.

For example in this blind test (in french) : http://deftones-archives.com/images/divers/blindtestChino.jpg

Steph also said last year on that diamond eyes webcast that he would love to tour with radiohead.

I remember a quote where chino talks about finishing ATF and saying to himself "we did some good shit this time!" and then a week later Radiohead's record came out and they just wanted to pack their stuff and go home.

radiohead is awesome.saw them in atlanta on the in rainbows tour. i've gotten rid of a lot of my cds and started buying vinyl. they had radiohead at the music shop in town. needless to say, now i have most radiohead albums on wax.

what does everyone think of the king of limbs?

I'm sure I've heard them say that they like and listen to Radiohead so I'm sure some of their influence rubs off on them. I don't think it's a case of trying to copy or be like them, probably more of a subconscious, indirect thing. I'm sure though a lot of the stuff they listen to influences them, not just Radiohead.
It's weird how many Radiohead fans there are on this forum - so many Deftones fans seem to be Radiohead fans too! Of course there are some similarities in their music but you can find similarities in a lot of different music (for e.g I could find similarities between Neil Young and Kurt Cobain if I wanted too) but their styles really are quite different so I wonder why that is?
Must be confirmation on the good taste of Deftones fans  ;D
To be honest I kind of lost interest in Radiohead for a while and started to long for the days of their earlier sounds but I gave Lotus Flower a listen the other day and really enjoyed it (the video is awesome too). It also made me realise how great Thom's voice is again so I think I'm going to give the recent albums I've missed a listen inc. King of Limbs. If the quality of the rest of KOL is anything like Lotus Flower it should be a great album.

I remember this as well, but IMO, Chino sounds better to me when he's at his best. Love Radiohead, but I think Deftones and Chino especially are more unique than Radiohead. My opinion...
Pushing you back but still you ain't goooooooooone!!!!!!

I dont believe they try to sound directly like anyone either, consciously that is. I sometimes think Chino sort of in a way dresses (but not completely or directly) like some of the 80's n 90's frontmen like Depeche Modes' or The Cure's guys. Hard to explain but I think some others get that vibe as well, especially through the WP era.

Agree with you completely.
I think ATF is a far better album than OK Computer and I think Chino's selling the Tones short if he said he wished they could sound like Radiohead.
Sorry Radiohead fans, Radiohead is a great band and Thom is a great singer. I can't listen to Thom's voice too much though - it's a bit too high and not that varied IMO in later albums, however I never tire of hearing Chino's voice - it really brings something special to the songs. I liked Radiohead the best during the 'Pablo Honey' and 'The Bends' era so I don't rate the experimentation that followed all that highly and it's not  a path I'd like to see Deftones go down. To me the whole experimenting with electronics has become a bit cliche. It seems/seemed to be the thing to do with a lot of alternative bands - Smashing Pumpkins did it (Adore), Marilyn Manson did it,hell even Korn did it (See you on the Other Side) and when I listen to those and post Bends Radiohead albums they seem to have aged a lot more than the more organic albums. It seems more original now not to go down that route as it seems the expected route to go down.
In my opinion Deftones have experimented more with unusual song structures, which I think is much more difficult to get right, and put out some really special albums, so I hope that if they do experiment it will continue to be in this vein.
Although I like Radiohead, I love the Tones far more. To me they make the music they want to make and they make music that feels right to them at the time which I feel is better than sitting down and  making a conscious decision to try and sound different by way of introducing electronic elements to the music and far more original.
Having said that, is it just me or does Crosses sound like it has a big Radiohead influence?

After reading this tread i found two things out:, 1. Deftones very probably don't draws influence from Radiohead and 2. most people posting here arenĀ“t native english speakers, in the youtube video posted above Chino says:

"I really like women's voice(...) how it's pretty and they let themselves be heard you know, and i'm really into that , i want to do that in our records, it's gonna be hard you know, because a guy's voice is not really so sweet, and may think maybe Thom Yorke from Radiohead, these really sweet words one person can do; you know but i not really looking to do it, not figuring it you know, I'm solely trying to see what i can do, you know and no-and-don't anybody thinks too much more about it; i just wanna do what it feels, and that's how it feels, put in on tape"

Not sure if a video with Chino saying that he thinks that Thom Yorke voice is soft can be enough to point an infuence, especialy when Chino inmediately later states that he don't wants to sound like him, but trying to express his felings in a soft way like women does, and he don't wants anybody to think too much about it. In summary, he is just sugesting that both bands could have common influences.
I understand that there were been a confussion because i translated the dutch subtitles and they say something diferent of what Chino really said, and the fact that Chino speaks fast and don't order the words correctly makes even harder for foreigners to find out what he says, but if listened with attention, one can understand what he've said.

I don't think that Chino have said that, because Ok Computer came out like three monts before Around The Fur, also if Chino is that of a big Radiohead fan like the french magazine says, why he haven't said it yet to any english publication, always that asked about his favorite musicians/inflences he always says The Cure, Morrisey or Depeche Mode, well he likes Hum, M83 and Portishead too, with the two later having a notable influence on his band Crosses.

I don't know what to think, i mean if Chino is a big fan of Radiohead why is he in the video saying that he don't wants to sound like Yorke? stills, is a fact that Around the Fur came out after Ok Computer (28/10/97 and 16/06/97  respectivelly), Of course that i've heard people (NME journalists, of course u_u') saying things like that, and like one month ago i were browsing articles and i found one about Deftones that was just a copypasta from the Deftones' wikipedia article lead and musical syle paragraphs, the only thing that the author added was "also the band draws notable influence from the english rock band radiohead" near to the end. that was infact, what made me start to look for answers. I remember a similar situation from long ago when i was reading a magazine were Chino himself said that his Side-project (the band "Team Sleep") would sound like Portishead, but with his voice thrown in it. Like one week later, a website published a similar article, but instead of publish what Chino said they posted: "Deftones frontman Chino Moreno says that the upcoming record of his side-project, the band Team Sleep would sound like Radiohead's Kid A album" all that without even mention that in the youtube interview Chino says that he don't wants to sound like Yorke, but in contrast the dutch subtitles says something like "Thom Yorke is one of the few who can sound so soft, and i want to sound like him" who gives'em the right to change what Chino have said? ???

That a member above said that when Deftones finished and released Around the Fur Chino said "we made the things right this time" but then Ok Computer came out and he felt like "packing his stuff and going home" that couldn't be: Ok computer came out before than the Deftones Album.
