Is Chino a better guitarist at this point? I play guitar and I honestly often times find Chino's portions more challenging/creative than Stefs.... Thoughts?

Stef is alot better than he lets on. He plays what he wants, and it just so happens that millions of people like it.  Chino is good with more melodic kinds of things. I think stef is probably alot better shit hes been playing for 20 something years.

Hidalgo

Stef is better technically for sure. Chino has improved since 2000 i'll give him that

Starz

Two different style of players really but Stef can do the melodic shit when he wants to. I don't think really that Chino is THAT good at guitar and I'm sure he'll be the first to admit it.

fuzzylogics

Yeah I think maybe I should rephrase the question, because obviously after playing that long and showing signs of being able to break out in much more complex stuff...why does he choose to stick to very basic riffs ?

Plus when you strum like Chino.... ::)

Huh?

Stef is more of a rhythm player. He holds the song structure together a lot more than the others. I mean does play some cool fills too, cus that's all chino really does anyway. Chino is more of an indie player. So when u talk about 'the better player', I think its more that stef is a metal rhythm player, whereas chino is more of an indie player. Stef probs can't play insane solos but I don't think that would suit deftones anyway. He does play more lead/effect stuff on sol invicto, check that out...

pony_01

i see steph always cover chino's part on guitar. chino often messed up his part so steph should takin care that one.

nigga please...

Caín

they're both pretty poor players. Stef is very tight at what he does but is missing a playful element to his style. I think it's because he is limited at what he can pull of.

fuzzylogics

Another wrinkle, do you guys prefer them both playing or just the solo Stef songs ?

E-Money

I personally prefer them both playing on songs...

Vesanic

I don't think Chino can come up with simple yet beautiful riffs such as Knife Party or Hexagram.

DEFinatelydeftones,fsho

They're both good and they compliment each other. Chino may not be that skilled but he has wrote things you all love.
Pushing you back but still you ain't goooooooooone!!!!!!

i don't really think alot of Stef's riffs are all that easy to play. he tends to use alot of strings at once on each strum, so you have to get really good at that style for it to be easy. it's trickier than it seems, especially to play it correctly and having all your fingers covering all the right strings at once then quickly shifting etc. to me alot deftones stuff is harder than alot of single note stuff out there. just depends what your best at. it's called simple too often though, which is very misleading. moderate maybe, simple i don't think so

from_musings

from a beginners point of view, maybe one or two songs may seem difficult at first... but thats not because deftones is difficult to play, that's because that beginner in question isn't mastering the instrument properly. once you can play the guitar you'll find that deftones is very simple stuff to play. both Stephen's and chinos :)

lostpilot

I have  to agree with from_musings - it is "fairly easy to play" band.

I love that Chino adds some parts here and there, it's worked out well so far.  But to put him anywhere near Stephen is just ridiculous.

stephens riffs seem simple at first. and from a technical guitarist viewpoint he isnt that great (i doubt he knows his theory inside and out) but I mean come on. Deftones aren't prog. I find that creativity gets hindered if you try to show off your full capabilities instead of just creating. Plus, try playing songs like feiticeira hexagram and some of the chords in Korea, etc and get it to sound good. Im sure even some  crazy trained metalheads would struggle. Stephen is the king of dischordant open strings in chords and also is nuts with harmonics and his picking. Very unique player.
