i think that 836k number is way way off, i dunno where it came from but i can pretty much guarantee that if we got the real numbers for s/t it would be around 600,000. which is good,

According to Chino - s/t is close to platinum, something he said in aug 2010 to altpress.

Alt.press: "Isn't White Pony the last Deftones record to go platinum?"

Chino: "Yeah, I think it is. Actually, I think the self-titled record is close to going platinum. I never got a platinum record for it. The only platinum plaques that I have are Adrenaline and White Pony."

@Hidalgo "close to platinum" isn't 600.000 copies, i'd say "close" is around 800.000- 900.000 copies

where's the source of your source? mine was hitsdailydouble.com, and billboard. they said 520k right before snw came out. about impossible to sell 300k from then

well either it is possible or your homemade lists sucks :)

Music sale rewards vary from country to country. This is taken from the BPI website for albums released in the UK:

Singles: Silver 200,000; Gold 400,000; Platinum 600,000
Albums: Silver 60,000; Gold 100,000; Platinum 300,000
Music DVD: Gold 25,000; Platinum 50,000

If I remember correctly from Uni, to go platinum in the US, you need to see 1 million records.
"It's good to be classic, it kinda shows that we're old" - Chino Moreno, Kerrang! Awards 2007

They're more popular than ever right now I think. "new kids" and old fans resurrected from the dead of today's rubbish might have brought the # way up I would think? Idk, than again the internet like others r saying...... I know I've bought it 2 more times since 2003 because someone wanted it more than I did, lol
Pushing you back but still you ain't goooooooooone!!!!!!

if you play in a band and make a living out of it, I think you keep a fairly good eye on how many records you sell. chino and deftones are guaranteed to find out if one of their records are approaching platinum, probably from someone in their crew who acts as a link to their label. it would be funny if chino got that st platinum info from the label and then talked to an average fan who says "no chino, you're wrong ..  fact is that an unknown guy posted an unknown list which looks like shit on the internet 4 years ago...i don't know where it comes from, but it was posted in 2007 on a shit-page on the internet ... and i've been calculating a bit on the those numbers and your fresh info you got from the record label does not match my calculations. sorry chino".
and chino would go "fuck :( I knew it was too good to be true. thanks for giving me these legit numbers you've got though, i'll tell the label and others in the band  :( :( "

it seems some st haters doesn't like st and then go looking for reasons that that would be fact according to the world.if st sells poorly, then it's an argument they would use. if it later turns out that the album sold well, well then, sales is no longer an argument. if chino says he doesn't like the album, then it's an argument they would use, and then chino is a good fucking source to use as objective facts. but as soon chino says something that goes against their predetermined view (that st is close to platinum) then he's just dumb old confused chino who aren't even a die hard of his own band. well if he's not a die hard of his band, what the fuck does he know about if st is good or bad

As someone who worked at a record store for 6 years that reported to soundscan, I wouldn't necessarily trust their methods. A lot of store "self reporting" was done that really messed with the numbers for example:

An artist does a record release instore signing, tons of CDs are sold so the scanned numbers are high, the owner of the store knows this and artificially inflates the scans to make it look like the album sold more. While I would never accuse a band of doing this, record industry people are notorious for doing anything they can to artificially inflate the numbers.

Live event data and search engine metrics would be a much more efficient way to track the Deftones popularity in 2011.

ST is great. Who gives a fuck. The economy is different here in the u.s., the internet has taken over, and there aren't a "ton" of 2003 era fans still into them enough to buy a fresh copy if they needed one.  The record is great, don't care if I'm the only person who bought it  or loves it still. Some of their best work lies there IMO. Some peeps here even hated it before and confess it is a good one. So what. They tour and that is good enough for me. And apparantly for them as well.

Well if it means anything Around the Fur was certified Platinum this month.

Deftones are a popular band but just not so mainstream (and by mainstream i say Mtv/radio attention) now like they were in their beginnings, and im glad its that away.
Just because their songs in youtube dont have like 10 million views doesn't mean they arent popular anymore.

Your post is really hard to follow, none of the band have really confessed a liking to ST because of the recording process, it all got mixed together in a haphazard fashion. as for chino his vocals were not very good (with the exception of hexagram) and that is proabably a large reason for him not liking it. It's an ok record that comes into its own if you're depressed, none of the track are easy going.

i cant think of anything positive they've said about it outside of the promo where they obviously had to try and sell it. i could be wrong but hey

Thank God that you........ love..... at all.

Does anyone know the latest sales figures for Diamond Eyes.
What are the chances of it ever going gold?
It's a crime that in today's world only acts like Gaga go platinum anymore -  It's an absolute crime that an album of Diamond Eyes quality probably won't ever go platinum!
