I asked Stef why they didnt play combat when I met him in 2007 and he said it was because Chino hadnt learnt his guitar parts yet which shows that despite writing the parts he wasnt overly interested at that time, Stef was actually quite scathing about Chino that whole conversation which showed how things were in the band during that period.

Now, that's interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, he did coke during the White Pony era. I dont know about a favorite though. If he liked them so much he'd still do them I guess. I think I read somewhere that during SNW he was on speed, but he didnt make it sound like he did it because he actually liked it though. I mean, according to him, he just smokes weed now.

And about them not playing any songs frm SNW live...dont know the reason behind it, but it makes sense that it'd be because it was a hard time in their lives. I've heard some ppl on here say that they dont like certain albums frm them purely because of the phase in their life they were in wen listening to it. But it would be awesome if they gt out of that mentality towards it, because they do have some amazing songs on it. And they should play Riviere, that'd be amazing.

yourwaves

obviously white pony is coke slang. I think the reason they called it that is because the album is about having confidence. Thats wat coke does even if its only temporary. To sum it up the album represents confidence. Like all u are is u~ live ur life....but besides that revierie is one of my fave deftones songs i hope they change their minds about playing snw i would love to hear riviere in miami bitches haha^^

snw9

Chino envisioned a witch with an army,i.e. the meaning behind Riviere. doesnt sound depressing but rather scary..and indeed it was Speed that Chino was on during SNW.
I think Beware wouldn't be a bad song to play since it doesnt have a personal feel to it. its about temptations and tryin to stay away from it.

They do Beware great live as well.  One of my favorites.

I'd much rather them they play music from their other albums, as quite frankly that album is very weak compared to the others, perhaps apart from Beware and HITE. So at Download I was happy with them leaving out SNW, give me Birthmark anyday.

The lack of any SNW songs is a shame in the current tour but I'm sure that will change as they go into 2011 and will change up the set list.

I love SNW, it's probably the most negative of all albums in terms of imagery and lyrics, but there are some proper shredders on there like Rats! and I love the ambience of Hole in The Earth and Beware (the latter being an excellent live track) Cherry Waves has got to be one of their most 'complete' songs in terms of songwriting too, a definite predecessor to sextape on the new LP.

All of the recent interviews have emphasised just how happy they are as a band to have got the new material out, with a reluctance to look behind them. It would be very logical that at the start of the tour they all said 'fuck the SNW songs for now' so there is a 100% fresh mentality in the setlist, playing often 7, 8 songs off the new album and then the more popular choice cuts from the older LP

I'm sure when Deftones start playing headline shows again post - Black Diamond Skye tour - in bigger halls and venues - they will change and expand the setlist again, and I'm sure Hole in the Earth and Beware will return to be staple set list material.

On a side note, I swear on the 2003 tour (specifically europe / UK) they were playing an instrumental version of 'Pink Cellphone' on theatre PA systems in between bands? I used to be really ghey for being on the barrier back then so would stand through sometimes 2+ hours of music being played off the PA, and I know that deftones make their own mix tapes to play, and as soon as I heard Pink Cellphone I remembered it... it would make sense it was played around that time too before SNW was released .... can anyone confirm this?

Well, they better change this, because it's getting boring. I mean, they even play the same songs from Diamond Eyes every night. Almost 3 months of touring and they haven't exposed the full picture of their new record yet. Risk, 976-EVIL and This Place is Death were only played during that webcast. I might be the only one, but I care a lot about these setlists and I really want to know why some of the songs that tons of fans love never get played live ( Lovers, Damone, Fist, Pink Maggit, Riviere, Deathblow, etc. ).

And about that story... From 2003, really ? Well I can't confirm this. But I remember that the sample of the outro of Beware used to be the intro of their concerts during the 2000's winter tour.

Penicks

Yeah, they can't really make the arguement "we play what the fans love" anymore. I'm sure they notice the crowd's reaction when they play a rare song. They make it easy for themselves, I guess.

You don't like SNW, I do. Things differ, from a person to another.

Haha true. But really I don't think they're too fond of it.

Vesanic

Maybe they aren't... But you know, sometimes, there are reasons behind all that. RX Queen, for example.

TheShade1989

You know, with SNW they were going through a hard time and everything, but I think that'd make for really amazing live performances, if they can capture those emotions and portray them through their songs. I mean, they do anyways, but I just think that'd be the plus side to them playing songs that for the most part they dont really seem to wanna play, for personal reasons.

i think playing any song you don't particularly want to play hinders the performance because you don't put everything into it. i know whenever i'm playing songs i don't really want to it gets a bit tedious. i just don't think the band is as confident about that material which is crazy because, personally, i think it's a goddamn impressive album. still i miss hearing rats rats rats and rapture live. those songs were huge.

That might be a stupid guess, but you know, maybe Sergio didn't learn like all the songs, that's why it's "easier" to play the same batch of songs everywhere. I'm not saying that's the case, but that could explain a bit of it too...
