Interesting side note to this thread.

I noticed today the new Stone Temple Pilots record sold 62,000 copies in the US the first week to chart at #2.

This equals Diamond Eyes first week of sales when the album charted at #6.

who fucking cares about the sales. really, why the fuck does anyone of you care about that. they fucking ship censored cd's to Europe. what a fucking clever strategy

I care a lot about sales!
Why?
Because Deftones have worked really hard to put this album together for our enjoyment.
This is what they do for a living and so they need the money earned from sales to survive.
If we don't support the good bands out there, then they can't do this as a profession, we'll lose a lot of great music and will all end up listening to shit like lady gaga.
It's obvious to me that the more people download illegally the less artists will make, therefore the less artists there will be.
Pretty important if you ask me.
Man I hate people who download without paying for something - I mean everyone can afford the price of a CD every few years.
I have a friend who downloaded Diamond Eyes and I swear I'm going to delete his whole hard drive.
Give your band the support they deserve or there might not be a band much longer

Very little of bands' money come from album sales.  The real money is in the touring.

SX King

True about touring but what you fail to realize is that part of the reason ticket prices are so high is because of people not buying the musuc. Of course thats not true for all venues but it is a contributing factor.

I'm with you in spirit.  But as Dakkon said, bands don't make much money from album sales at all.  Like 20 cents an album or some shit.  So the real profiteers of album sales are the record companies.  However, they will obviously be a lot more willing to sink money into promoting a band, getting them better videos, maybe making some DVDs, and releasing more singles, if they have good record sales.  Humans react to incentives.  The incentive for the record company to properly promote Deftones is $ earned through record sales.  So that's why I care.  Plus, it's just bragging rights, and I want to see the boys be what is considered successful.

T

I just saw them on tour. $30 for a T-shirt that all goes directly to the band. Ticket sales are chump change for the bands anyway since the venue takes a big cut. It's the merch that makes them the money. Most of the money from sales goes to the record company. Most of the money from ticket sales goes to the venue. ALL of the money from merch sales goes to the band. I've bought DE on CD and vinyl, as well as a DE tour shirt. I think I can cover the cost of your friend's download.

deftones86

well not all of the money goes to the band. those shirts arent made for free. Merch is nothing compared to ticket sales not even close. Venus make most of their money from promotion deals thats why you see coca cola and pepsi every where and also from selling drinks and parking passes. Why do you think bottled water costs 6 bucks at a concert? Bands usually take any where from 60-70% off ticket sales then minus roadies tour manager fuel hotels and all that so a band probably gets 40-50% so if a ticket costs $20 bucks and 2000 people are there thats $16,000-$20,000 a night split 5 ways and then you have taxes oh glourious taxes so you can go ahead and knock off 34% from that $16,000-$20,000 so thats $10,560 $13,200 a night split 5 ways and thats $2112-$2640 per band member per night. So if they play 180 shows in a year thats $380,160-$475,000. but you can probably knock off a couple hundred thousand from that because they have to pay back the record company for studio time because the record cost more to make than the album sales would cover. So your looking at anywhere from $180,160-$275,000 a year per band member after taxes from ticket sales.  Now some of the dates they are not headlining like the blackdiamondskye tour so they make even less. And then the festivals the money is split between 20 bands. Also Bands dont make any money during the album writing process. They do get an advance from the record company and this is paid back from album sales. And if the album doesnt sell much then yes that money comes out of the ticketsales also. The lable also gives a band tour support, which is the money that actually funds the first part of the tour before the checks from the venues and ticket master and whoever sells the tickets start to come in.  So support your band.

This has been you Music business lesson for the day. i hope you took notes there will be a test.

Exactly, so if bands took the initiative like Nine Inch Nails to be independant. They've built up their fanbase and reputation, so all they need is to write and album, get it out there, online or not and the gigs flood in.

But a lot of bands LIKE the Deftones are tied to a contract.

T

Well the venues around here only have radio station promotion, water is only two dollars, and the ticket was only 30 bucks.

I made that point because smaller bands charge around $15 for their shirts, whereas Deftones charged $30. If you can make a profit selling shirts for $15, think of the profits they're pulling selling shirts for $30. That's all I'm saying man. Also the venue they played at is downtown, and the parking for the venue is all managed and maintained by the city, since the venue itself does not provide parking. The $6 I payed to park across the street from the venue goes to the city, and the private company that owns the lot. Since the venue doesn't have its own parking, that lot or the city owned parking garage are the only options for parking.

Not every venue has the amenities of things in bigger cities. That's where I was coming from with that statement. Either way, with two copies of DE, a concert ticket, AND a $30 T-shirt, I think I'm doing my best to support them.

any update for week 8?

All I can find right now is that Diamond Eyes fell from #70 last week in the Billboard Top 200 to #94 this week (week 7). Looking for actual units sold but having a hard time locating  the information.

Any one else able to fill in the blanks out there?

Seriously? 20 cents a CD?? Then split that 5 ways within the band...??

Can somebody please give an accurate amount the band receives? Not saying that 20 cents was far off, but I'd like to know exactly what they get.

Hidalgo

it's about 1 dollar per cd they get

There Will Be Blood

Well they have to pay back the record label also thats why they get a small amount.  I'm sure when they do pay them back they get more money per album.
