Deftones
Diamond Eyes

It was high praise indeed. If you're familiar with ROCKLINE you know about our long running feature called the "Encore Question" in which each of our guests leave a question for the guest on the next show. Our esteemed guest last week, Metal God Rob Halford, was beyond enthused upon learning that he would be leaving a question for Deftones. Off the air during a break in the show, Rob began to verbally list his favorite Deftones albums, individual songs and his respect for the entire band and its leader Chino Moreno. Quite honestly, on occasion we need to help some guests with a prompt or two about the following guest; rarely a full tutorial is required. You'd be beyond surprised how many artists don't listen to music from other performers. Somehow it makes sense with the brutal cycle of album, tour....album, tour, ad nauseum. We've also learned that many of our guests, for myriad reasons, listen to talk radio, preferring to take a break from music altogether, or as to not be influenced by the work of others. Not the irrepressible Mr. Halford, however, who launched into a stimulating and well versed discussion of the relative merits of "White Pony" compared to "Adrenaline", two of the first three Deftones albums and of the ethereal quality of "Diamond Eyes", the title track and first single from their brand new album. You'll need to listen to this week's show with Deftones to learn exactly what the question was which Rob left for the band. Btw, the equally irrepressible Mr. Moreno will join us for the show along with guitarist Stephen Carpenter to take your calls, answer your questions and provide a verbal guided tour of their superb new effort. Get prepared with a perusal of Deftones.com or their MySpace

No serious, enlightened or heartfelt discussion of Deftones is complete without mention of the tragic accident on November 4, 2008 involving bassist Chi Cheng in Santa Clara, California which has left him a coma since. His current condition is described as being in a "minimally-conscious state". The details of the accident itself are harrowing; the response of Chi's numerous friends, fans and supporters is heartening. Several benefits have been staged, including the "Chi Leng Cheng Special Needs Trust" and a website has been created (OneLoveForChi.com) which has created a sense of much needed community dedicated to helping, informing and comforting the thousands of friends and fans who care for the talented bass player and want to be kept abreast of the latest news regarding his condition. As you can imagine, the medical bills are astronomical and endlessly mounting. For those of us fortunate enough to have been directly touched by Chi's essence, his piercing, wicked sense of humor and joie de vivre, no matter how much is being done for him it can never be enough. Deftones were recording an album with Chi called "Eros", which Moreno described as delightfully "weird" when the accident occurred. In a typically classy move the album has been indefinitely shelved pending Cheng's prayed for recovery. Enlisting friend and former Quicksand member, Sergio Vega, the band created this new album "Diamond Eyes" which is our focus on the upcoming show. Huge props to Deftones for their principled decision to honor their friend and band mate.

Join us for the innovation and magic which is the music of the Deftones as Chino Moreno and Steph Carpenter join us from New York"
